Hoffman had like, 14 meltdowns last year. Negative WPA.

Then he blew the world series.

And he will perhaps have the worst WPA for all RP after tonight. He might jump Romano.

It has to be over

Gotta feel for Hoffman. It must be incredibly tough to have a great playoffs but blow game 7 of the world series.  There has to be a mental component to what is going on with him.   I really hope he can get right. The team does need him if they hope to have a successful year.

Yeah, just ask Mitch Williams.

12 hits but only 2 runs.

Winnable game. Blew another one late.

12 hits to Arizona’s 8.

How many more losses like this can we handle

Jeff Hoffman is destined to fail. He did something bad and God is no longer with him.

The everlasting enigma is that he is both good and terrible. He is bad and talented and unlucky and unfit.

If you don't pity the man, you are inhuman.

Look at this photograph.

Second time in the past 6 games they’ve scored 2 runs on 12 hits. They had 4 walks the last time too (none tonight).

[Matheson] John Schneider says that Hoffman was used in the 8th today because the #BlueJays want to keep him on a more regular workload and not leave too long of a gap. He reiterated that Hoffman is the closer and stated his support for him multiple times, as he has in the past.

Too bad nobody has the balls to say soooo you played him bottom 8th cuz u knew your team was gonna give it up? Cuz if he’s your closer and it’s tied then the 9th is getting played whether u score or not as long as the 8th is clean. He ain’t the closer but JS ain’t got the balls to say it

and yeah I’m just ranting pissed off, just wanna feel the wins again

Imagine having a 300M payroll and rolling out this turd after the pathetic season he just had.

Dont worry though, his stuff looks great... its all bad luck lol

You realize that most of us prefer to use indicators for future results right?  Stuff+ is a good indicator. Nothing is perfect.  Hoffman sucking doesn't mean the indicators are wrong.

It just sucks goats when it's one of our players who aren't following established trends.

Vladdy only had 1 home run last year at this point in the season too.

And for the most part, his regular season was meh for what he was being paid.

Need Postseason and WBC Vladdy to show up during the 162 game season.

Didn't know Sportsnet hired Grilli.

Blue Jays could use Grilli right about now, not Sportsnet haha

The strikeout numbers are still there, so I’m not giving up on him long term. I still think he can be an effective arm for the Jays. But right now, I’d take him out of the closer’s role and let him reset in lower-leverage spots for a bit. Let him rebuild some confidence, then transition him back into a 7th- or 8th-inning role, which is where he thrived with the Phillies.

That one that hit the 1B bag was crazy

That’s the thing, several good teams with great closers have been having issues.

Abreu is trash

Munoz is trash

Bednar has been walking 5 per 9 and been super lucky he hasn’t blown more saves

Problem with the Jays is we can’t afford to blow saves when they’re struggling so hard to score runs.

You bring up a good point.

Definitely something going on with him mentally right now and maybe Game 7 of the World Series is still lingering in the back of his mind.

It might be best to remove him from the closers role for the time being, let him regain some confidence in lower leverage spots and then put him back in a 7th/8th inning role (like he was with the Phillies and where he had his most success) if someone like Varland runs away with the closers job.

This is a completely rational take, kudos.

Hoffman cannot be the closer at this point and you need to be wary of using him in high leverage spots.

But you keep him in the pen and hope he turns it around

Actually Hoffman/Bednar is a great comp, both are walking way too many and striking out tons of batters.

The difference in my eyes is 1 guy has been lucky while the other has not.

That being said I wouldn’t be comfortable with either as my closer.

I don’t want my closer walking guys

Abreu is really a setup guy, and even at the end of last season, when Hader was out, he didn’t exactly look comfortable in the closer’s role.

Munoz wasn’t shaky last year, and Bednar is coming off a 2-WAR season. While Bednar has looked a little shaky at times, he really hasn’t been that bad beyond the high walk rate and 4.15 ERA. The strikeout numbers, FIP, and WAR still suggest he’s been fine overall.

Hoffman is the one who looked shaky for pretty much all of last season in the closer’s role, and it’s fair to wonder whether Game 7 last year has had more of a lingering effect than people want to admit. I still think he can be an effective arm for the Jays, just not necessarily in the ninth inning. His 2023 and 2024 seasons with the Phillies show a very different version of the pitcher.

Yes - that seems like the rational thing to do.
