Are you lol because you think he will leave (to be on a commissioner track) or because you think it is a bad decision? Or because it is just kind of crazy that he was probably on track to be out until late June when Jays out of nowhere swept the Yankees and didn't look back.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2025 Posted December 12, 2025 Nice to get the elephant in the room sorted out. Ross Atkins extension news should follow shortly now. Spanky__99 1

Olerud363.354 Verified Member Posted December 12, 2025 Posted December 12, 2025 If he keeps the team competitive for the next 5 years and wins a World Series he will be at Gillick's level. Hard to compare eras because jobs have changed. Would people compare Atkins to Gillick? It seems like Shapiro is more the guy in charge of baseball ops, even if he doesn't do day to day details. At about the same point GIllick had two AL Easts, no playoff series wins. Shatkins has 4 playoff appearances, 1 AL East title, and an American League pennant.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 12, 2025 Posted December 12, 2025 Mark Shapiro is the best thing to happen to this franchise in actual decades. Great to have him stick around. Orgfiller, max silver, Gen.Disarray and 8 others 10 1
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2025 Posted December 12, 2025 Shapiro has spearheaded revitalizing the Rogers Centre into a modern facility that improves both the baseball and casual fan experience. He's helped make our ST complex top of the line, and just in general brought up this organization to be among the most respected in the league, including the signing of several top free agents, and leading the team to its most successful run since the 90s. No brainer decision to continue with him at the helm. Olerud363.354, Gen.Disarray, Ball4Life and 3 others 6

He's indicated in other threads that Jays are behind in some pitching development areas, which is interesting. If people on a public forum are expressing that the Jays are "behind" then the Jays should know that people "think" they are behind and just disagree. As an outsider it's still hard to know what to make of this management team. Last few years it's an 88 win a year team in the same group with maybe Baltimore and Seattle. Just with very recent and dramatic playoff success. Which is great and tends to make us think they are all geniuses, but this time last year we thought they were all morons.

No brainer decision to continue with him at the helm. Top 3 MLB payroll, modernized stadium renovations, state of the art Dunedin complex, respected by players/agents/league. It's amazing to see what the Jays look like after 2025. Forget 10 years ago, even telling someone that 3 years ago would have been shocking. I've said before, if this org just started developing talent at a better clip, then they'd be one of the top ones in the league because they generally sign well, trade well, and are willing to spend. Hopefully 2025 was just the beginning of that happening (Barger, Yesavage, etc). BTS, Funky, max silver and 3 others 5 1

Which is great and tends to make us think they are all geniuses, but this time last year we thought they were all morons. i do like shapiro, i think everything this management group has done off the field (the dunedin facilities, the park renovations, improvements to care of players' families) is representative of a world-class organization. regarding my skepticism on the pitching side: they don't really do any of the sexy things that we can see on the public side (dramatic usage changes & pitch mix expansion, extreme velocity development) that would get the pitching nerds to geek out over them. that being said, there are enough things they do well on the major league side (primarily, understanding biomechanics to keep guys healthy & prioritizing count leverage) that I think they can be considered middle-of-the-road on the whole. it's tough to tell how they're doing from a minor league dev side without access to all the data, but i think it's a good sign that in the last couple of drafts, they've had a good number of pop-up guys that weren't 1st round picks that have increased in value fairly quickly (johnny king / gage stanifer / khal stephen / kendry rojas / tiedemann / etc). it's a good extension based on the combination of shapiro being good at what he does, as well as the uncertainty that would come from having to move on. we could be doing a whole lot worse Orgfiller and Spanky__99 2

This has easily been the most successful run since the 90's and coincidentally (or not) the organization as whole was essentially stuck in the 90's prior to Shapiro's arrival.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 12, 2025 Posted December 12, 2025 What can you even criticize this man for at this point? All I can think of is that modern ticket/stadium pricing has made the product less accessible. On the baseball side, you could criticize the team for not being the class of the league in every facet, but not organization is. You could have pointed to fundamental flaws with developing MLB hitters, or instructing MLB hitters, or developing pitchers or finding relievers, a year ago but the 2025 season kind of answered a lot of those concerns as the farm blossomed and the MLB team did as well. I dunno man. We are kind of spoiled. Good organization now, good payroll. Good brand. The main way they screw this up is bad contracts. Spanky__99 and Orgfiller 2

I'd assume he will be allowed to leave early if there is a chance to be commissioner. I'm not sure there was a chance he wouldn't be back even if not for the success this year. I think he was hired to upgrade the facilities and generate different streams of revenue, which he had been knocking out of the park. Atkins, on the other hand, I think was in real danger. I was going to joke about Vladdy's contract but I can't even do that Yeah, you'd like to think they could have signed him for less money 1-2 years ago, but cementing the future around him and understanding the organization's commitment to winning because of it has definitely made the team a more attractive place to come for free agents and draftees. Kudos to ownership and Shapiro for getting the team to this status Funky 1
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2025 Posted December 12, 2025 Got to give it up to Shapiro for getting the dollars out of Rogers to support this team. That alone is quite an accomplishment. Spanky__99, JaysAllMighty and mphenhef 3
