I am shocked he did this.  He will be a stud next year with more recovery time from Tommy john.

Are the Jays also able to qualify him next year? I know we weren't able to do so this year.

Wow that’s amazing. Great sign that these guys wanna be here.

I think guys like Bieber, Scherzer and Springer showed the whole league how great it was playing in Toronto this year.

Opt in with an extension to follow?

Yeah they have months to try to work out an extension too. I suspect they'll make a real push for one. But even if they don't, his caliber for 1/16 and the ability to give him a QO next year is beyond great.

Wow that’s amazing, and surprising. A 1/16 deal for someone with his upside is a no brainer. Great news.

Considering we got Max last off-season for $15,5 to be the 5th starter. It's crazy to get Shane Bieber for 500k more the next off-season.

This is a hometown discount if I've ever seen one! He could of easily gotten a multi-year deal with a higher AAV on the open market had he opted out. This proves he really wants to stay here. Hopefully we can get a team friendly deal worked out with Bichette now! I suspect Bichette will not be so generous though, I'm thinking min 8yr/$250M for him to stay.

Yes they can qualify him next year because he'll have been with them all season and never qualified before.

Certainly makes the path to an extension a lot easier.

Say what you want about how the season ended, it was heartbreaking, but I think the impact it had on the organization (at least short term) is going to be nothing but positive if this is any indication. As long as Bieber is healthy, there was no reason for him to take this option from a financial standpoint. He clearly wanted to stay.

It's that Cleveland culture ingrained in him

Is there any reason to worry that he did this because he’s -not- fully healthy?

It doesn't matter, even if he was hurt, he would be allowed to take that option.

If he was hurt, he wouldn't make himself available game 7.  I think he has admitted he doesn't always have his best stuff from start to start as he's still not fully recovered.

There would have been no need for him to hide anything

It is a possibility for sure.
