And honestly, it would take a lot for me to pick this guy over Schneider on the major league roster. The thing is rosters expand in september so you'll be asking Schneider/Loperfido only to go down for 2 weeks before theyre back up. If Santander ever gets ready by mid September then we can revisit whether to DFA France.

That's not cautionary, that's concerning. 15 minutes ago, glory said: Sounds like the delay is that he hasn’t been cleared from concussion protocol, so that’s probably not a good thing. Hopefully it won’t impact his return this season or performance if/when he’s back. He’s super important to this team. The protocols are cautionary by definition and factor in his symptoms while also requiring gradual increases in activity. If he's hitting, fielding and running the bases that's a pretty good sign IMO. Spanky__99 1
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2025 Posted August 12, 2025 Schneider says Springer is hitting, fielding, and running with the major league team, but MLB won't clear him to play in minor league games. He says he looks and feels normal, but there are a 'lot of boxes to check' when it comes to MLB's testing. Spanky__99 1

I would guess he has to pass his baseline neurocognitive tests every player takes in spring training. Not sure if that comes before hitting, running or fielding, or only before a rehab assignment can start.

This is my own speculation, but I get the sense that the Jay's doctors think he's ready and MLB does not. Schneider made a point to differentiate between the two and I sensed a little frustration when he discussed MLB's tests, as well as a bit of bewilderment when he mentioned how good George feels. It sounds like he's doing his full normal routine here in Toronto.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2025 Posted August 12, 2025 Straight from the current CBA: Before any Player that has suffered a concussion is permitted to return to play in any game, regardless of whether the Player was previously placed on an IL for such injury, the Club must submit a “Return to Play” form and the supporting certifications and doc ument referenced below, to MLB’s Medical Director and the Play ers Association, and the Players Association must confirm receipt in writing (which it will do promptly). The Return to Play Form, a copy of which is attached hereto as Exhibit D, must contain the following certifications by the Club Physician and the ATC: (i) all symptoms have resolved; (check) (ii) ImPACT testing has returned to range of baseline; (must have or he wouldnt have been allowed to start baseball activities) (iii) the Player experienced no symptoms with exertion and baseball-related activities; (check - according to what the Jays are saying) (iv) the SCAT5 is within normal limits; and (also check or the Jays wouldnt have submitted a clearance request) (v) the Club Physician has cleared the Player to participate in baseball activities. (clearly a check) The Return to Play form must also be accompanied by the documentation supporting these cer tifications, including, but not limited to, copies of all ImPACT and SCAT5 tests (including the SCAT5 from the time of injury), the current neurocognitive test score, the baseline neurocognitive test scores, and any reports by the Club Physician and the ATC. If the Medical Director or the MLBPA expert questions whether the Player should be returned to play, they shall consult with each other as well as one of the outside experts on the Committee prior to making a decision. In addition, the Medical Director may direct the Club to have the Player evaluated by an MLB-approved MTBI specialist in the Club’s home city before the Player is permitted to return to play. In the event the Medical Director and the MLBPA expert are unable to agree on the Player’s return to play, they shall refer the matter to an independent expert selected by the Parties, who will determine in his sole discretion whether the Player should return to play. Gonna go out on a limb and guess that's why Springer is back in Toronto. Also for reference: ImPACT testing is a crucial component of concussion management protocols, particularly in sports and educational settings. It helps in the early diagnosis and management of concussions by providing a standardized assessment of cognitive function. The test is administered online and typically takes about 25-30 minutes to complete. It includes various tasks designed to assess cognitive abilities that can be impacted by a concussion, such as visual and verbal memory, reaction time, and processing speed. Spanky__99 and Grant77 2

It's encouraging that he's taking part in baseball activities and that he feels normal but it's discouraging that he obviously keeps failing something. Concussion recovery isn't always a straight line. You can feel fine but your brain still isn't where it should be, also symptoms can disappear and then suddenly return. Here's hoping this passes soon

Well remember when he slid into Jazz Chisholm's leg on a head first slide. He left the game vomiting but returned to the lineup right away. I wouldn't be shocked if he actually suffered one on that play and it went unnoticed or he passed all of their tests when they were conducted. 2 blows to head in a short period of time when in reality he reacted worse to the first one.
