I don't see anything beyond that and I certainly didn't say that they weren't trying. So lack of effort and not trying are 2 different things? Interesting You said Berrios can be inconsistent. I suspect that's all you're seeing. You simply never know what you're going to get with Berrios, but at the end of the year, if you squint a bit, he's a solid middle of the rotation guy. Can't trust him with a playoff start though IMO. Spanky__99 1

I hate when people try to dissect every single word on a message board, they have multiple meanings. I'll rephrase. I expect better (results) from Berrios in an important situation like this. I expect you'll fight me on this too.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 I think Schneider could be a backup 1B with some work in the offseason. That play is made if he and Clement are swapped.

Like... use Bassitt as an example. A few starts ago he guts through 6 innings walks the tightrope, bends, but doesnt break and ends up giving the pen a break by eating up those innings. Some fans see starts like that .. the timing of them and make the leap that the pitcher was just somehow able to summon some extra fortitude on demand in order to clutch up. (not saying Grant is doing this... but we all know fans that do) Fast-forward to his last start and he got the sh*t kicked out of him, so it must be because he wasn't focused or wasnt trying. Same thing with Berrios. It's just that psychological projection that fans have with all sports. Its 99% made up and just helps fans either lay blame, or feel better. Spanky__99 1

Agreed, but I trust him in a postseason start, just don't yank him when he's dealing.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 Orioles are still a good lineup despite the bad year Orioles LHB are a bad matchup for Berrios and Bassitt Jays were likely to have a come-down after the bigger series that preceded this Orioles are better than their record, probably. By true talent The weather is gross All of this lined up to be a gross series. It's too bad that Hoffman blew the last game; I would have been happy with a split. My biggest disappointment is that the Jays could only trot out a Lucas and Estrada piggy back for game 1 yesterday. That's just not a very competitive offering on the bump. I agree with Mr. Grant that some of the performance has been frustrating. Maybe some lack of preparation from Bassitt or Berrios but honestly who knows. They could have just not had it vs. a decent lineup. Some bad offensive performances too, situationally, by certain players.

Berrios and Bassitt can't control the outcomes (like you said). That's just nonsense. This is baseball. Unless they were out drinking the night before, skipped the preparation meetings or something else - this likely isn't something they can control. Of all the guys on the team, Berrios and Bassitt are probably 2 of the most professional guys we have. They are giving it everything they have out there. Spanky__99 1
