[Murray] Alejandro Kirk and the Toronto Blue Jays are in agreement on a five-year, $58 million contract extension

Hey the Jays finally made a good signing. I was clamouring for them to do a deal like this. Seems like they gave him an extra year or two for a lower AAV and no club options, all guaranteed.

Kirk is probably not a guy you want after 31 so you get his prime for a good number.

No brainer. Catching is non existent in the farm system, and Kirk is still young with some offensive potential. After trading Moreno and losing Jansen, they pretty much had to commit to Kirk.

Hard to be upset with this deal. I think Kirk has pretty much shown what his floor looks like, if the bat rebounds just a bit then this is an excellent extension.

At the very least he provides solid D and serviceable bat at the Catcher position

I'm good with this, some of his value will be lost the more baseball commits to automated strike zones, but that will probably happen gradually so it shouldn't affect much of this contract value.

If they keep the same type of challenge system they had in Spring, he likely improves it given how many he got right.

Not concerned about the challenge system, more so if they fully automated the strike zone it would hurt Kirk. I personally think a challenge type system is the best way to go, I think pitch framing should remain part of the game. But I'm also a bit of a dinosaur at this point

Solid deal... now do Vlad/Bo lol

Correction*** Now to Bo

Don't let the door hit you in the face on the way out Vladdy . Guys an entitled prick full of himself thinking if he has a down year he will get the 3rd richest contract in league history and if he has a MVP season he'll get the second largest contract in league history

Good thing it didn't take $20 million AAV like someone on here was insisting.

Also

Kirk, 26 years old, projects for 4 WAR, gets $58mil.

Vladdy, 26 years old, projects for 4.8 WAR, apparently deserves $500mil.

Hm... I don't think Kirky is likely to put up any 6 WAR seasons, but still cmon...

Vlad might be the most overrated player of the past decade, and we have the pleasure of being the team with the most pressure to sign our homegrown hero to a massive deal.

The outcome of this Vlad situation could be disastrous

Wouldn't feel comfortable with this guy's body but he obviously had no trade suitors because of that so this is the first guy that would actually extend.

Whoever was suggesting $20M AAV for Kirk a couple weeks ago was on something lol.

Great signing if Kirk continues to be around a 3 WAR catcher and figured he would sign for something around $11.6 AAV over 5 or 6 years. No way he was topping Sean Murphy's contract extension and that was the benchmark used.

If Kirk rediscovers some of his 2022 magic with the bat, he's likely a 4 to 5 WAR catcher, so good they locked him up now at this rate. Runs through 2030, so he'll be 31 by time it expires.

You figured Kirk would be extended to the exact contract he signed? Sounds made up to me!

Well, he was very close and I agreed with him and Max. BB wanted him to sign for 17-25M AAV to lock him up for 4 years. This was a great deal for Kirk.

Spanky quoted my previous post from another thread below where I said the Sean Murphy extension should be a benchmark for Kirk and I wasn't that far off at all.

Kirk MLB catcher rank (fWAR projected) by projection systems:

Steamer 600 - 1st in MLB!
ZiPS - 5th
Steamer - 5th
OOPSY - 6th
THE BAT - 7th
THE BAT X - 7th
ATC - 11th

Keep in mind that every projection system is giving him less PA than basically all other starting catchers, since his track record of PA is lower. That's not really his fault though, not like he has been chronically injured or anything. If you add just 10% to his ATC projection he's top 7. Add 10% to Steamer and he's top 3.

Just curious what the rush was to get this done now?

Wouldn't the same deal have been there to make a year from now?  Or at the all star break this year?

This could be like the Grichuk deal.  I sure hope not, but he was still 2 years away from free agency with probably the worse body in MLB.

I'd like to see another good year from him before handing out this much to a bad body catcher.

I believe Kirk is primed for a huge season and the time was right to sign him at a very reasonable cost. He was willing to negotiate a mutually beneficial overall term and AAV which was equally sharing the risk between he and the team. He has improved his peak and overall throwing velocity in the offseason as mentioned on yesterday's game broadcast, and he has greatly improved his exit velocity in the spring as well which is a strong indicator of a potential offensive resurgence. He is basically worth this deal if he simply continues to perform as he has been, and if the offense works it's way back this deal has potential to be extremely team friendly.

I'd like to think you can do better than this, but based on your entire posting history I'm not holding my breath. You are the type of poster that's constantly railing against the front office for not taking a giant leap of faith with Vlad and assuming that he would be worth a franchise player deal before coming anywhere close to earning it, so it makes little to no sense that you are complaining about the team handing a market value deal to their starting catcher who has turned into an elite defender, has typically been very durable, and the team has little in the pipeline available to replace him in the future.

This literally looks like the same replies on Twitter to the contract with the line right after it saying "BUT SIGN VLADDYYY"
