Last day to sign Vlad?  Crazy we're at this point (whether it's good or bad).

What happens?

The Bad: Vlad leaves as a free agent.

The Good: If the above happens: Atkins and Shapiro gets canned!

Note: how will the fickle fanbase react if Vlad leaves as a F.A., will they just become totally uninterested in the Jays??

Tick tock... once Vladdy reports to camp will probably mean the end of any extension talks until the offseason.  I'm sure he'll do the "i won't take any further questions on this during the season so ask away today".

I would save it all up for Gunnar Henderson in 2029.

The Jays were finalists for Ohtani and Soto (from what we were told) so Vladdy knows the Jays have money to spend and he's going to try to get every penny he could squeeze from Rogers. You can't blame him.

We saw the market crater for Alonso this offseason and heck even Bregman, so you gotta ask yourself do you really want to be paying $40+M per season for Vladdy, especially when he's in his 30's? He's a 1B/DH type of bat. Unless he hits like David Ortiz into his 30's, you really don't want to be given him a long term deal of 10+ years.

The time to trade Vladdy was earlier in the offseason, especially after Soto signed, when the market was really hot.

I just hope they don't let him walk for nothing.

And Ortiz didnt even get any longer term deals either, his longest contract was only 4 years. Even raking as a DH for as long as he did, the long term commitments weren't there.

Yes, different ages and Ortiz is the purest of pure DHs, but there was still enough worry that he would crater sooner rather than later. He just never really did.

Yeah David Ortiz kept raking and hitting at an elite level even right until his last season in 2016 at the age of 40. His only down season was in 2009. Contracts were different at that time as well, but yeah he never got a super large contract like other players at the time e.g. A-Rod, Alfonso Soriano, Vernon Wells etc. Most term he got was 4 years/$52M from 2008-2011 and then moving forward just kept signing short term deals for one or two years max.

Different in comparison to Vladdy since Ortiz has his breakout at the age of 27 in 2003 and still had I believe one or two years of arbitration/control still left. Crazy that Minnesota non-tendered him after the 2002 season and refused to give him the $1.2M which he got as a FA from Boston.

Ortiz would be a good comp for Vlad, health permitting. Really tough decision.

Bregman's market didn't crater, he didn't get the term he wanted but 40AAV over 3 seasons is an overpay. IMO. And yes the Jays were finalists for those players. You don't think so?

My 9 year old is starting to freak out as the hours pass today.  I feel so bad for him.

You don't feel bad for me?  I might die of alcohol poisoning if this goes on much longer!

I don’t think Rogers needs to start saving for Henderson 4 years from now

So they can lose out on getting him to the dodgers..lol.  I'm not sure that's the direction I want them to go.

If the front office meets his number, he will sign simple as that. Whether its past his “deadline” or not.

Ortiz also most definitely juiced

Watching Vlad's interview just now confirmed my suspicions about him.  He's all about Vlad!

He doesn't understand what a negotiation is.  He has his number and not willing to move.  They weren't even close according to him.

I wonder if he understands what a trade is because it's coming.

I suspect there ARE NO “negotiations” with Vlad.

He has a number and he isn’t willing to budge. That’s not a negotiation

That was my take as well. It's either pay me my number or I'm leaving. I believe he's likely going to be in for a rude awakening in free agency when he sees what teams are actually going to be willing to pay him. Opposing GM's won't be blind to the issues that a long term deal with Vlad entails.
