There are no secondary skills, and the carrying skill (his bat) isn't good enough to make him an asset if it slips by even 10%. Isn’t the same true for Vlad?? Except people want to give him 300 million for some reason
204Jays Verified Member Posted January 20, 2025 Posted January 20, 2025 Would have preferred Alonso but its a good deal and fills a need. Bregman on a short-term prove it deal would be icing on the cake.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2025 Posted January 20, 2025 Alright 5/92 isn’t bad I honestly thought it would be more Still don’t love it but that’s the same price as Tanner Scott so…… Terminator and BatFlip 2
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 20, 2025 Posted January 20, 2025 This takes us to 262.7. Already 1.7M past the second threshold.

I'd love it if they could make it happen Springer Bichette Guerrero Satander Alonso Kirk Clement Gimenez Varsho Martinez, Barger, Wagner, Loperfido, Jimenez, Clase, Straw, and Roden offer some intereting young bench options
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2025 Posted January 20, 2025 Some deferred money is included. Pop off Ross. Spanky99 and Jays24 2
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2025 Posted January 20, 2025 I wonder by how much the deferred money brings down the AAV for tax calculations. Seems like decent business on our end even if the 5 years guarantee is steep. Terminator 1

Unless you throw Santander at RF which I dont think you'd want to do.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 20, 2025 Posted January 20, 2025 Add Alonso or Bregman and it's not quite so bleak

Vancouverite Verified Member Posted January 20, 2025 Posted January 20, 2025 considering the rumours were 5/125 than how can we not be happy with 5/92? that seems like a great deal for a guy that just smashed 44 HR and just turned 30. Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion and Josh Donaldson all had their breakout season at 29 This is also why i think it's too early to give up on guys like Kirk (26), Varsho (28), Gimenez (26). Bone R Verified Member Posted January 20, 2025 Posted January 20, 2025 I want Bregman but I'll settle for Alonso.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2025 Posted January 20, 2025 This is 8 million less than what Ben Clemens predicted without factoring in the deferrals. This isn't that bad after all.

Doubt Springer will play a full season so i don't see why Santander needs to play DH unless it's for rest days. Vlad/Alonso at 1B/DH i think is doable. only downside to have both Vlad and Alonso is that you can utilize the DH to rest Springer unless you sit one of them or you move Vladdy to 3B for certain games. Also Bo doesn't need DH games, the guy is 26 years old...
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2025 Posted January 20, 2025 5/92 is 18.4 AAV. Add in the deferred money and it's even less. I know he sucks at literally everything else but for a switch hitter coming off a 44 homer season (3rd in MLB) I'll take it. jaysblue and Spanky99 2

I wouldn't want to speculate, but I wonder if the deferred money calculations would actually have us under this threshold. That could mean this is our last signing of the offseason which would be underwhelming considering that we've added in an effort to compete but still have some holes to fill.

Vancouverite Verified Member Posted January 20, 2025 Posted January 20, 2025 Maybe Rogers doesn't like rejection so he went to atkins and shapiro and said f*** it, spend whatever you need just make sure you show the baseball world that we're not a bridesmaid?
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 20, 2025 Posted January 20, 2025 I wasn't big on signing this player but I don't hate the number. Lower AAV than Christian Walker. Two more years but he is like four years younger than Walker. Lower AAV than Teoscar. Again, two more years but he is a couple years younger than Hernandez. Joc Pederson just got the same AAV as a hard platoon DH... Jays24, Spanky99 and Terminator 3

I don't think they would care as much about the lines specifically at this point of the year. Like last year, if they suck they will firesale and dip under all relevant tax thresholds (probably). We've seemingly gotten Tony and Hoffman for reasonable deals so far. Even a broken clock is right twice a day though...
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2025 Posted January 20, 2025 Yeah agreed with others. Five years is a lot, but the AAV + deferrals makes it more reasonable given the market, especially if the latter allows them to keep spending.
