You seem to be missing that MLB is a business first and foremost.

Sorry - what part am I missing? How is signing top talent for the minimum not good business?

Im probably missing context here.

You are missing plenty.  No one is arguing against signing Sasaki, least of all me.  My theory is that since the Jays are up against the luxury tax threshold, other significant signings ($$) will only occur if Sasaki is signed.  Ownership has always said more money is available if the Jays are fielding a contender.  Which a Sasaki signing would do.

You aren’t missing anything

Jim is arguing that they won’t sign Bregman if they don’t secure Sasaki

But you haven’t mentioned anything about anyone other than Sasaki

I mean, I kind of did. I said earlier that if we sign him - I think were immediately more appealing to the other FAs.

I just dont see how a min. player affects your cap outlook - it shouldnt. You either have money for Vlad, Breg/Alonso/Santander + or you don't. Missing out on Sasaki shouldnt change those pursuits.

Then you again are missing the business aspect.  Multiple teams, not just the Jays, have indicated more payroll is available when the team is a contender.

Ergo, a Sasaki signing increases available payroll.

Sure, that is probably true. I dont think we're disagreeing over much.

Well now I have to agree with Jim lol

A Sasaki signing would influence your spending because you just added an ace at league minimum and you probably try and legit compete

If you miss out on him it might make sense to stay away from long term commitments

He just introduced that argument ... "business impacts" are broad. Im sure there are alot of things that change when you sign any impact player.

All I was arguing for was that doesnt change active/current FA pursuits. Does it enhance, yes... Ive said that too in other ways beyond a rising cap.

Right it won’t inhibit any signing

It's 9:20 am in Japan and 4:20 pm in California. 4:30pm -5 pm local sounds like a good time for an announcement. They can all go out for dinner afterwards to celebrate. It would be a prime news time in Japan also.

Can't believe the Jays are going to do this. Finally. They get the Japanese guy.

Sounds good. I'll see everyone on Twitter in 5 minutes.

We know the FO needed ownership permission to make offers to Ohtani and Soto.  Is 200M for Bregman in the same vein.  And did ownership make permission conditional on Sasaki signing?  Giving the Jays a real shot at a highly successful season?

Does Bregman have standing offers and waiting on Sasaki decision?

Who knows?

Bregman's market isn't there....he's not getting anywhere near 200 million.  6 and 156 was a fair offer from Houston.  He might come in around there or less.

There is one thing that gives me pause about the Japanese report that he is signing today. There have been no trades for international $$s announced yet.  I, would assume that means the LAD and Padres are still trying the acquire max IFA $$...  I don't think he would/can sign until the Team actually has an amount promised.

Unless he is going to the Jays and is ok with $9.5 vs $10m....
