Laika Community Moderator Posted September 16, 2025 Posted September 16, 2025 Funny to see the Baltimore announcers call Canadian baseball fans low IQ for boo-ing the Baltimore P throwing to first. Don't fans jeer the visiting pitcher on throws over like, everywhere where the fans care at all? They boo it all the time in Fenway or Citizens Bank.

I always laugh when the fans boo it on the second throw over. They should be cheering that as it sets up an advantage for the team. I suspect that was the situation the Baltimore announcer was making his comments on.

Yeah that's what they said "it helps your team, it's basically like booing a ball" I look forward to seeing the genius Orioles fans cheering the next time a Jays P throws over in Baltimore Spanky__99 and BatFlip 2

I can't seem to find anything conclusive on the internet and I see all kinds of conflicting information. Some suggest current velocity is like 7+ MPH faster (measured from it's current location) than where it was measured in like the 90's. I'm just curious and would like to know. Thanks. Anyone know?
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 16, 2025 Posted September 16, 2025 13 minutes ago, Brownie19 said: Anyone know? Do you mean where in the ball flight the measurement is taken? I think your 7mph thing needs a decimal "The Pitch/FX system that MLB used in 2010 measured pitches at roughly 50 feet from home plate, which is where the 105.1 mph of Chapman’s fastball was measured. The current MLB Statcast system measures velocity as the pitch leaves the pitcher’s hand. MLB has gone back and recalibrated Pitch/FX pitches to convert them to their velocity at pitch release. That’s why Chapman’s fastest fastball found an extra .7 mph." When you go back further it gets more wonky. I think some of the Nolan Ryan velos for example would have been taken at like, home plate? I've read that before. Those are just reported velocities though so whatever.

All the anecdotal stuff people say about "they took the readings at home plate in the 70s and 80's" is just stories and misunderstandings of where the radar was placed, which was behind home plate, but pointed nearly directly at the mound. Velo drops by about 9 or 10% (varies due to environmental factors) from when it leaves the pitchers hand to when it crosses the plate, so if Nolan Ryan in the 70s or 80s had a velo of 100+ when it crossed the plate, the velo out of hand would have been 110mph+. That's just not realistic.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2025 Posted September 16, 2025 RIP to Robert Redford - aka The Natural. I know not technically related to "Around Baseball" , but i think that movie being such an icon in the baseball movie genre makes it relevant here.

That is what I'm talking about, but I was hoping to go back further to compare where it was measured back in like the 90's and how that compares to today. If anyone knows.

If anyone knows. Back then, different radar guns were calibrated to take measurements at different locations. Some took them at release, some took them nearer to the plate... some were in between. There really wasn't a "standard" Brownie19 1

Those often end up looking a lot worse than they end up being so it might not be the end of the world. Best case scenario he misses a game or two and sticks to DH'ing but with Yordan, it might not end up a best case. Let me guess he's a pussy and needs his vagisil correct? Spanky__99 1

I expect players to play through pain, not necessarily injury, but pain. So if it's just a rolled ankle, if it's just pain management, yeah he's got to get out there because his team is on the brink.
