I'm sure the Giants are eating some money but the Reds are making some moves and spending some money.

  • Signed Tito to manage
  • Brought back Nick Martinez on the QO
  • Traded for Gavin Lux
  • Traded for Jose Trevino
  • Signed Austin Hays
  • Traded for Brady Singer
  • Brought back Brent Suter
  • Traded for Taylor Rogers

The best way to describe them is basically a pretty fun, sneaky good team with a lot of variance. They could win under 70 games just as easily as they could above 90. All in all they probably settle near .500. The OF is awful and any of the IF not named Elly or McClain could swing in either direction. They need the OF to overperform to provide average value as a group, Candelario to bounce back, one of Lux/Steer/Encarnacion-Strand to break out, and Alexis Diaz to return to elite form to be a good team.

It's a Royals esque group which could take the leap but might more likely be totally mid. Francona managing them will be fun and he's no stranger to taking on an underdog with big talents. Probably has manager of the year locked down if the Reds are even WC3.

Estevez to the Royals...

The Royals and right-hander Carlos Estévez are reportedly in agreement on a two-year deal that comes with a club option for 2027. It’s a $22MM guarantee for the Premier Talent Sports and Entertainment client, which includes a $2MM buyout on the option valued at $13MM. If the Royals exercise the option, the deal would reach $33MM over three seasons. The Royals have a full 40-man roster and will need to make a corresponding move to make this official.

Estevez is decent at all, but woof on these 2/22 guarantees for alright relievers. The Hoffman contract looks better and better with each of these passing signings. Estevez projects for a > 4 ERA/FIP, did the Royals buy the 2024 ERA? I guess as a flyball pitcher Kauffman is a good landing spot for him.

Yeah that's a lot of money for Estevez. The Hoffman deal looks like a steal as does the Yimi Garcia deal. Atkins was smart to jump the market on the latter.

Yimi has more injury concerns but he's a lot better than Estevez and he's only getting paid less than 2/3 of what Estevez is getting.

Infielder Luis Rengifo, who filed at $5.95MM to the team’s $5.8MM counter, is the final Angels player whose arbitration case remains unresolved.

Crazy man.

You own him in the LOD haha.

I'm talking about the Angels taking him to Arb over a 100 grand, it's petty, you dingleberry.

Jack Flaherty finally a Tiger again. Will he bring Bregman with him that is the next question.

Such a weird offseason. The market was so player friendly out of the gate and it absolutely cratered in the new year.

Jack Flaherty got a lighter AAV than:

  • Joc Pederson
  • Christian Walker
  • Teoscar
  • Kikuchi
  • Buehler
  • Nick Martinez
  • Manaea
  • Severino
  • Eovaldi

Only a few of these make any sense.

Michael Conforto got $17M in like, November. What would he have to settle for right now? $8M?

To be fair, Flaherty's AAV is kind of fake. It's a 2/35 guarantee which is a steal for the Tigers in terms of tax calculations if they care about that. But it's also just a basic 1/25 prove it deal with an opt-out, which turns into 2/45 if he's mediocre/bad but healthy enough to stick around for 15 starts. It's a smart deal for both parties involved.

Lots of chatter around Flaherty and his velo not holding up later in the season, with his fastball being a bad pitch on its own. This was evident in the results getting worse as a Dodger and a pretty bad postseason. If he repeats his 2024 he'll be in line for a proper contract the second time around you'd think.

Definitely agreed on your overall point however. The market started hot and then tanked for the remaining FAs post Soto/Fried/Burnes.

Probably the best umpire in MLB was fired.

Pat Hoberg had a gambling account, shared his info with someone, and that person used his account to place bets on baseball, including 8 games Hoberg umpired in, but zero evidence Hoberg's calls were influenced and no bets were ever placed by Hoberg's device, just his account. He did apparently delete some messages that had to do with the investigation.

Sucks.

Yeah - looks like we read the market pretty good after all.

But Vladdy still wants to get paid like it's November 2024

Funny part about this tweet, the embarrassment of riches from the Dodgers...

DFA'd and leverage innings does not compute, lmao.

Brasier, 37, was DFA'd last week but should get leverage innings for Chicago.

The Angels should sue Rendon or grieve his contract or something. Insane situation.

Might be too late.  Haven't they acquiesced?
