Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 Even that is dumb In the divisional series the higher seed should just get 4 or 5 home games tbh so they actually have an advantage based on doing better in the regular season 5 games all at the home park of the higher seed. One off day after g3. Or, 1 game at the home park of the lower seed then 4 straight games of the higher seed at home. If I was in charge, the DS would look like that ^. 1 home game for the shittier team them 4 straight for the better team. And the WC round, the higher seed would only need to win 1 game to move on while the shittier team needs to win 2 in a row. Not a bad idea And your WC idea is what they currently use in the NPB so there is a tried and tested formula
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 11, 2024 Author Posted October 11, 2024 There are far too many off days in the playoffs these days. The guardians and tigers having 3 days off in a 5-game series is absurd Right And now tentative WS games 6 and 7 are in November Just no

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 Baseball in November ~ Hockey in July Yeah - they need a solution to this IMO. I really do hate how long the MLB and NHL playoffs drag out. There are a lot of pros and cons to the current setup, where it's a crapshoot more than ever before. I haven't seen the stats recently, but suspect homefield advantage is still somewhat of an actual advantage. If you wanted to reward teams for regular season records more, and reduce how much of a crapshoot things are, you could give them more home games as has been suggested. I'd be curious if that's actually a concern for MLB. Perhaps the OMG Mets and a shitbag Tigers team that sold their #2 starter at the deadline, winning in the playoffs is good for baseball? Everyone loves an underdog story, so maybe they like it this way.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 The logical answer with more playoff teams in the fold is to shorten the regular season and make the playoffs longer, but they'd never do that due to the revenue that 162 generates. Maybe shorten ST by a week, and then expand the DS to last 7 games instead of 5. The Wild Card round can be 3 games, it is what it is, but the actual playoff rounds should all be 7.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 Yeah - a shorter STing would be nice too. I'd certainly like to see the DS increased to 7 games. They could also just reduce the number of off days in each series. I shouldn't say I don't like the grueling NHL playoffs - it's that they extend into July that gets me.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 It should be 2/2/1 with travel days only, so twice. But they don't want no overlap. Should be a great night tonight. Got some cold cans of Asahi and Sapporo in the beer fridge! Perfect night to enjoy them!

Yeah they should either start ST earlier or make it shorter. Wonder if they would ever start the season mid-March, but at least this upcoming season, Opening Day is on March 27th and not April 3rd. ALDS should at least be 7 games IMO. Don't think it would add that much to the schedule and the World Series should still finish by the end of October. Also, shouldn't be as many off days. Wildcard, even doing something like the NBA does for the bottom Playoff teams, so in baseball where the 5th and 6th place WC teams play in a one-game showdown and winner plays the 4th place team (1st Wildcard) in another one-game showdown. At least all the divisional winners are guaranteed to play in the DS. Also, would limit the amount of off-days before the DS series. As for the NHL Playoffs, it does drag on for way too long. They have an extra round in the Playoffs since 8 teams make it, so it's understandable but yeah Stanley Cup Finals should be over by early June or by mid-June the latest. Playoffs should start first week of April, not mid-to-late April.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 Good ideas, and MLB isn't stupid, they would be all over the chance for extra playoff revenue. But MLBPA will have something to say.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2024 Posted October 12, 2024 If the only change was a 7 game DS I’d be okay with it The off days suck but I wanna see more Clay Holmes and less Tim Mayza anyway

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2024 Posted October 12, 2024 Congrats to the Dodgers. That was a f***ing great series to watch. Kudos to the Padres - they are a fun, good team. But karma for Machado - guy is a loser.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2024 Posted October 12, 2024 I kind of hope Ohtani continues to be subpar the rest of the playoffs. Just to see the headlines, and how MLB will spin it and shine up the turd.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2024 Posted October 12, 2024 The Padres went scoreless their last 24 innings after the 6-run 3rd inning in game 3. Woof. Talk about going ice cold after having all the “momentum”.
Masterbather Verified Member Posted October 12, 2024 Posted October 12, 2024 I'm down to rooting for central teams. That's not a very reassuring feeling. I might even accept the Mets at this point and that hurts but beggars can't be choosers.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2024 Posted October 12, 2024 Would have been fun seeing these two teams battle over a 7 game series, but happy to see the Dodgers win, especially after what Machado and Tatis were doing Game 2. Looks like a good rivalry out in the NL West for a couple of years. Hope the Padres can make some more big moves to contend with the Dodgers. Also, can't forget about the D'Backs in that division.

I might even accept the Mets at this point and that hurts but beggars can't be choosers. MLB either wants a Yankees/Dodgers series or Yankees/Mets series. Ideally, a showdown between Judge and Ohtani would get the huge headlines. As a fan, would be fun to watch as well. As much as I would love to see Cleveland or Detroit beat the Yankees in the ALCS, I bet the Yankees get the more favourable calls to help push them through.
