glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 can't really hate the deadline deals. All the expiring contracts are gone, intriguing prospects actually acquired. I can see some thinking a Green deal would have been welcome, I can see that argument. Money involved probably sunk that. The fact they even got a warm body for Richards is kind of amazing. Figured they might get their Coke machine stocked at best. I wanted them to trade Green, but you could at least argue that he's useful for a 2025 team that wants to contend. IKF was not necessary, as there is no shot he's going to sustain his current level of production and there are many internal options that could replace him. So from that standpoint, if they had to trade one, then they probably traded the right one for their goals. Whether they made the right decision to keep Green in general depends on what they turned down. Maybe another team didn't want to take his whole salary (very possible) and the Jays didn't want to eat any. Regardless, very pleasantly surprised with the deadline. The Jays didn't really trade much but they got way more back than anyone could have imagined.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 I'm a little surprised that Kikuchi got a way better return than Flaherty. I guess last year's post-deadline flop tanked his value a bit.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Would you have traded Bassitt for return Tigers got for Flaherty? I would have!!!
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 The Rays will fix him. Unowned in 3 board leagues. LOD - Pirates.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 I would have!!! But would the giving team have offered it? nope.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 But would the giving team have offered it? nope. His 6+ ERA over the last month or so may have tanked his value.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 His 6+ ERA over the last month or so may have tanked his value. Probably more to do with the contract value than a few starts
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Probably more to do with the contract value than a few starts That's also a factor, but it never helps when he's not pitching well. Teams in the thick of the race can't afford to give him 4-5 starts to turn things around - that could sewer their season. They want guys who are performing NOW (like Randy Arozerena is hot).
xposbrad Verified Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Some ok salary dumps, it’s clear the Jays were interested in shedding salary. Not sure which realistic fans think this team is competing anytime soon lol. But the Jays should have made some bigger deals to gut this team and build for the future. Surprised they kept Vlad, this team probably has the worst farm in the majors and was hoping they’d start the inevitable sooner rather than later.

Jim Bowden thought it was a great idea to trade Vlad, Bo, Gausman and do a full rebuild. That's pretty much the best evidence I've seen that it's a terrible idea.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Overall very happy with what the Jays did at the deadline It's depressing of course but they 100% did the right thing and executed well.

Solid plan, we can discuss how well it goes next year.

Yeah, I think realistically they got a very good return on expiring contracts. They still have time to make a stance on Vlad. He was never their priority at the deadline and shouldn't have been. They had so much work to get done, they weren't calling teams on offers for Vlad & Bo unless something magical came to them. They got more than a bucket of balls for many of these guys...

I guess last year's post-deadline flop tanked his value a bit. Apparently the Yankees originally had a deal in place and pulled out over medicals. That explains why he was pulled from the game on Monday and a deal didn't go through to literally 5 mins before the deadline on Tuesday.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2024 Posted July 31, 2024 Trying to keep up with all the trade action since being in Europe, but looks like the Jays had a real active trade deadline and moved everyone on expiring contracts, including some other valuable pieces like IKF. Looks like they got solid returns for everyone and did very well.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2024 Posted July 31, 2024 Damn Dylan Carlson's value really tanked hard the last couple of seasons. Gets moved for Shawn Armstrong lol. Maybe Rays could unlock some magic with Carlson.

I recall the Yankees backed out last minute on a potential Ken Giles deal at the deadline years ago and the Jays ended up not having time to pivot.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2024 Posted July 31, 2024 LOD - Pirates. I feel for you, bro. Really.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2024 Posted July 31, 2024 Can't even remember a worse sample of playing time than the 2024 Dylan Carlson line, from a fantasy perspective 59 games with .198 and 0 HR and 0 SB lmfao
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2024 Posted July 31, 2024 BA likes the Jays deadline job: Great Jobs Toronto Blue Jays The Blue Jays had a good trade deadline on the heels of a disaster season. That feels like their version of a fine dessert at the end of a meal that gives you food poisoning. It’s a nice moment, but it doesn’t erase the memory of what else happened before. Toronto has one more year before Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette hit free agency. So far, they have won zero playoff games with this group. Still, getting Jake Bloss and Joey Loperfido (as well as Will Wagner) for pending free agent Yusei Kikuchi is an excellent return. Landing rising Pirates prospect Charles McAdoo was a nice piece of business as well.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2024 Posted July 31, 2024 Is Atlanta going to play either Soler or Ozuna in the outfield now? I'm confused.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2024 Posted July 31, 2024 Is Atlanta going to play either Soler or Ozuna in the outfield now? I'm confused. Harris II expected back very soon
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2024 Posted July 31, 2024 Harris II expected back very soon 1st - Harris has been awful and continues to decline after a great rookie season. 2nd - that will mean Soler becomes a bench player? They can't start 2 DH's. Soler is starting RF tonight for the first time all year. Are the Braves going to decline Ozuna's $16M 2025 club option? Seems odd after the season he's had. They'll now have Soler until the end of 2026. Can't see them carrying both Ozuna and Soler next year. Odd move by AA and the Braves IMO. Pure desperation from a team that was the best offense in baseball by a MILE last year, which is now 21st in runs scored and 18th in wRC+ Very reminiscent of the Blue Jays over the past couple of years. Better fire those coaches! They must be telling the players to hit differently.

Barrelsandbombs Verified Member Posted August 1, 2024 Posted August 1, 2024 Details on the money Jays sent out for the Turner/KK/IKF trades. Not sure if the 2024 amounts are prorated or not.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2024 Posted August 1, 2024 Crap, that might mean we didn't get under the threshold.
Barrelsandbombs Verified Member Posted August 1, 2024 Posted August 1, 2024 (edited) Crap, that might mean we didn't get under the threshold. Fangraphs already updated, they now have the Jays CBT hit for 2024 at 239.6 (over) instead of 235.4 (under). Cots and Spotrac haven't updated yet. Edited August 1, 2024 by Barrelsandbombs
