Ranked Houston Astros #2 prospect in 2024

BA Grade: 50/High

Track Record: Bloss spent three seasons with Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, earning an All-Patriot League first-team selection after his third season. He transferred to Georgetown for his fourth season and went 8-4, 2.58 with 96 strikeouts and 24 walks across 76.2 innings. Bloss won Big East pitcher of the year and was a unanimous first-team all conference selection. The Astros took Bloss in the third round of the 2023 draft and signed him for a below-slot bonus of $497,500. Bloss debuted in the Florida Complex League making two appearances before a promotion to Low-A Fayetteville.

Scouting Report: A strong-framed and athletic pitcher, Bloss has the broad- shouldered build of your typical innings-eater. Bloss mixes primarily a four-seam fastball, a curveball, a slider and a changeup. Bloss’ fastball sits 93-95 mph and was clocked as high as 97 while at Georgetown. Due to the spin efficiency and lower release height he’s able to create a flat plane of approach on the pitch which makes it difficult for hitters to get on plane. His primary secondary is an upper-70s curveball at 77-78 mph with heavy two-plane break. Bloss’s slider is hard at 85-87 mph with heavy cut, and he shows above-average command of the pitch. His changeup is an upper-80s offspeed with two-seam fastball movement. Bloss has fringe-average command but should develop into an average strike-thrower.

The Future: A late blooming college arm with a four-pitch mix led by a plus fastball, Bloss has a chance to blossom into a back-of-the-rotation starter with the ability to be effective out of the bullpen.

Scouting Grades Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 40 | Control: 50

Lame Thomas to the Indians.

Great pick-up!

If the Guardians could get another SP, they will be a tough out come playoff time.

Can we please move Bassitt? Should be a no brainer at this point.

In this market, Bassitt and Green should definitely be moved.

Whose next!

Chad Green? I will take a f***ing haul for a desperate team needing bullpen help.

Guessing the market is cool on Richards and Kiermaier.

Moving IKF sounds like a good idea as well.

Keep selling that’s for sure

Green

IKF

Bassitt

Gausman

All should be fully available

Seems to be sellers market on pitching

Really really hoping we move Bassitt as he seems like a prime candidate to fall off a cliff very soon.

Yeah in this market they should definitely be shopping all 4 of them.

All would be desirable and net a nice return. But at the same time, none of the four have a ton of surplus value, nor are they irreplaceable if you just take their AAV and sign a similar player in FA.

It's the rare moment where they can build the farm system and then theoretically compete in 2025 by turning around and using the money to sign FAs. Heck, it might be the ONLY way to compete in 2025. New FAs without much drop-off with new AAA and AA prospects ready to contribute on top of it.

the 2nd place team in the Kikuchi sweepstakes, maybe the Dodgers take a run at him

Good opportunity to trade Bassitt for big haul and make strong farm system. Take Bassitt's 20 million and replace him this winter in free agency

Just remember that Jorge Lopez RP from the O's netted Povich (yesterday's 2nd game starter), Yennier Cano, one of the best setup RPs in baseball, and another prospect, Juan Rojas, an A ball prospect at the 2023 deadline.

We could get a really solid haul from Green and Bassitt if we play our cards right (and move Bassitt).

Jays want to get under the luxury tax. More moves coming for sure. Fully expect Bassitt to be traded, maybe Gausman too.

As fun as it it to dream about the new prospects we have just brought in remember if we are actually doing well next trade deadline most of these new guys are being flipped for the rentals we need then lol.

You’re going to be disappointed in a few hours. I agree the Jays are going to want to get under the tax, so if they can’t do that by just trading the rentals then there likely will be another move but I think at most it will be Green or IKF. No chance they move Gausman. Maybe a minor chance they move Bassitt but still very unlikely.

um....that's a good thing?

OPTION A - trade all the expiring contracts for prospects. Have more prospects to build the team around and/or trade when needed for additional help.

OPTION B - don't trade the expiring contracts. Have fewer prospects to build the team around or trade for additional help.

Green would be good to move given the money and big time sellers market. The SP with term we moved could bring us a rare haul in this deadline. They want to roll it back yet again and need a rotation lol, so I fear you are correct.

Its going to be interesting looking back in Aug at '25 how all this mess all turned out.
