AMS528 Verified Member Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 It's a weird profile. He can take a walk and run well, and not embarrass himself at LF/RF/2B/1B/3B so that works but he's also a utility player who can't play CF or SS which is not ideal and teams like pinch hitters with pop. He probably really only has a couple of years of positive value left, but it looks like that value and profile was appealing enough for the Dodgers.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 The casuals on social media are losing their sh*t right now. Not sure why a career .227 avg, .725 OPS, 27.1% K rate and 7.4 WAR over 5+ seasons player is gonna be missed that much. Yep and those career numbers are being kept afloat with what he did in his first two years. The last 4 years he has a .678 OPS.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 Was wondering if Biggio was moved in part to get under the CBT threshold, but the Jays are comfortably below atm edit - actually that's wrong. forecast luxury tax payroll per FG is $246,991,068. Threshold is $237M. So $10M over.
BCZ Verified Member Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 Biggio is a slightly above avg hitter if given every day ABs... combine that with his versatility and he's a nice grab for LA. The injury in 2021 really hampered him and as a result Blue Jays didn't give him consistant ABs in subsequent years. He should do well in LA.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 If the Jays don't show noticeable improvement before the deadline, hard to see them staying above the threshold = offloading a contract or two.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 His statcast page supports the notion that he sucks with the bat. His arm should also limit him to 2B/1B. If he had qualified he'd have the weakest arm at LF/RF/3B

If he had qualified he'd have the weakest arm at LF/RF/3B Yeah, but Lux is sporting a 68 wRC+ with s***** D. Biggio 88 wRC+ and probably better D.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 Yeah, but Lux is sporting a 68 wRC+ with s***** D. Biggio 88 wRC+ and probably better D. Which is probably why LA moved something for him. A slight upgrade for them for a RP which they seem to grow on trees. They probably figured he wouldn't make it down to them via claim.
M.E. Verified Member Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 Very rarely does a player that the Jays move or pass up on have notable success when they leave. Of course there are a few notable success cases. Not enough to make me think Biggio is going to find success.

Think it's because if the Jays made this decision 13 days earlier, they could have optioned him down to AAA. Then you add the Dodgers factor and everyone's scared he might become useful for a world series winning team. All while we have a fat left handed DH who can't hit, field or run on the roster lol. Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 Just looking at the schedule, Dodgers being on the west coast seem to play far more games in daylight compared to the Jays. Biggio splits over the last 4 years show he is noticeably better in open ballparks, and during the day. Based on the historical data for Biggio, moving from the dome / predominantly at night to an open ballpark / often during daylight = +20 boost to wRC+, minimum
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 better to have his salary taken like this than stash him in AAA they have guys like Barger and Martinez down there already, and Horwitz up here playing 2B don't even need the mediocre depth Biggio would represent Was just giving him logical reasons if you want to be mad about this. Personally, I would have made this decision 13 days ago and optioned him or just gotten rid of Vogelbach. Penny pinching a decision when the team payroll is like 230M doesn't matter to me. I'm also not going to lose sleep here as Biggio had more than enough time to show he was more than the 26th man on the team and he just never did.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 So the Jays get out of some, but not all, of the salary owed to Biggio. And they get a AA lotto ticket too. The Jays have a 40-man spot to play around with as well.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 I wonder if the Dodgers will try to trade or release Chris Taylor now? There's something clearly not right with him.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 If the Jays don't show noticeable improvement before the deadline, hard to see them staying above the threshold = offloading a contract or two. Trading Kikuchi alone would solve that and several teams would want him I'm sure
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 Dodgers optioned Vargas and with Mucny still out that means ..... Biggio will play
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 Getting under the tax and resetting the penalties would definitely be a priority if they are selling at the deadline. It should probably be a priority regardless since this team isn’t worth the penalties that they will incur for being over the threshold, but no one is taking Kk and Turner’s contracts so it would be difficult to do that without trading the pieces that are actually valuable (Kikuchi, Garcia, etc).
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 Imagine the reunion of Biggio and Teoscar when he arrives in LA. It will be like Red meeting Andy at the end of The Shawshank Redemption. I'm getting teary eyed just thinking about it.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 It also shows you how Biggio was valued around the league. Clearing his salary and getting a fringe relief prospect with major control issues is the best the Jays could do. I mean we all know he didn't have much value, if any at all, but for a team like the Dodgers to want to trade for him after he was DFA shows you that he's still a decent piece to have around for depth and versatility on the bench, and someone who also has some untapped potential still.
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 Glad he's going to a team like the Dodgers to further expose the incompetence of this organization.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 Biggio playing 3B until Muncy is back
infinitebook Verified Member Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 So strange to see Biggio on the front page of espn's MLB page
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 Biggio playing 3B until Muncy is back Lol I feel that will be a disaster for them
BatFlip Verified Member Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 Trading Kikuchi alone would solve that and several teams would want him I'm sure Yup, I suspect he’d bring back a tidy little haul.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 Biggio makes the 1st play of the game on a slow dribbler to 3b charges it and makes the throw but runner was safe, a base hit
