Laika Community Moderator Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Clement is 28 years old with a .585 career OPS...wtf are you talking about? Do you have eyeballs? Hit tool, defensive tools
CJ-Freeway Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Damn, I feel sad for the guy, he's been with us for so long. Woulda DFA'ed Vogelbach instead
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Do you have eyeballs? Hit tool, defensive tools Unless he reins in the extreme 50% chase rate the better hit tool won't matter. If you combined Clement's hit tool with Biggio's plate discipline you would have a tremendous hitter, but each of them are so extreme in their weaknesses that it greatly limits their offensive performance.

Much more to work with with Clement and his MLB sample remains pretty small and unstable anyway

glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Agreed that Horowitz and Vogelbach shouldn't be on the same roster, so from that standpoint it was a strange roster move, but Biggio was a far bigger risk to steal PA's from Horowitz than Vogelbach is. From that standpoint it's probably a good thing for Horowitz and possibly for the Jays depending on how he hits. Horowitz skill set of contact, no power, line drives, and using all fields is like the 2023-24 Blue Jays wet dream so I'm sure he'll get plenty of burn.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 12 days ago they could have done this move and Cavan couldn't block the move. Makes me think they thought he would accept the assignment, or they just don't care about losing him and figure a spot on the 40 man is needed

Auldphartt Verified Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Great day for the Biggio hating fan club, but he has been a lot better this year for the Jays than Clement. Carrying 2 first basemen and 2 DHs isn't ideal roster construction unless they are committed to Vlad playing 3rd base now. Sad day for the Blue Jays. Cavan Biggio was an above average defender at multiple positions. His 2024 OPS was higher than Ernie Clement's (and George Springer's for that matter). Meanwhile defensively worthless players like Daniel Vogelbach and Danny Jansen continue to get playing time. Either one of those losers is an okay DH but Justin Turner is still a better choice, at least against LHPs. Losing Biggio will come back to bite us.

Little s*** like this annoys me.
BTS Community Moderator Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 like where is Votto? This whole thing has been so strange. Dude shows up in ST, casually hits a nuke off Zack Wheeler in his first AB, then stubs his toe on a bat and is never heard from again.

The wheels are falling off this regime Atkins must be falling back into his old addictions and losing focus. My guess is World of Warcraft.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Do you have eyeballs? Hit tool, defensive tools I prefer advanced statistics to the eye test. Clement sux balls.
Auldphartt Verified Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Seems kinda harsh to give up on the guy after only 1480 career AB's. They didn't really give him a chance. This year he was mostly used as a pinch runner or as a defensive replacement. I guess he should have made more commercials.

BTS Community Moderator Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Incompetence I think they prefer to lose him and his salary
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 I think they prefer to lose him and his salary I would imagine the team is going to prioritize getting under the luxury tax threshold soon. This high of a payroll (with the penalties that come with it) for a .500ish team that best case will get WC3 if it takes less than 82 wins to get it is simply not a smart way to run a team.
keggy Verified Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Do you have eyeballs? Hit tool, defensive tools I like Clement but this is not the hill to die on. Biggio has always been and may always be clearly better than Clement.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 I like Clement but this is not the hill to die on. Biggio has always been and may always be clearly better than Clement. Not going forward
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 I think they prefer to lose him and his salary I think there's some logic in that. Enough that claiming the FO is incompetent seems silly.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 I think they prefer to lose him and his salary I thought if not traded and claimed, the claiming team is only responsible for $650k or whatever the MLB minimum is these days and the Jays have to pay the rest?
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Not going forward That's far from a given. Both guys have pretty similar projections for the rest of the season and 3 year Zips projections as well.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 This is sad, but I'm OK with it. I really enjoyed Biggio when he first came up. I loved that keen eye he had and he had enough pop in his bat back when MLB was using juiced balls to do some damage. He's such a smart base runner and a high baseball IQ. Eliminating the juiced balls really hurt him. That uppercut swing no longer produced, but Biggio worked hard to flatten his swing out and to become a more versatile player to try and contribute as much as he could. A player who was easy to cheer for. Wish him nothing but the best. I have no doubt he'll latch on elsewhere and I wouldn't be surprised if he continues to carve out a role at the ML level for several more years.
BatFlip Verified Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 I thought if not traded and claimed, the claiming team is only responsible for $650k or whatever the MLB minimum is these days and the Jays have to pay the rest? I think that's right, so it's not a ton of savings this year. I don't think he's worth the bump on his $4.2M salary for next year and its wise to try some other options with his roster spot. Calling the FO 'incompetent' over letting Biggio is a bit cynical.
