keggy Verified Member Posted February 12, 2024 Posted February 12, 2024 I'm convinced Mark Shapiro hit IKF with his car intoxicated. And instead of a lawsuit gave him this contract. Only thing that makes sense. This happens once every couple of seasons. The front office gets tunnel vision on a marginal guy with a profile that they like and they essentially fall over themselves to get him. Remember when we were chasing Jay Bruce for years? Before that it was Morales. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Trades or signings are far more the results of many many conversations vs a "hey what about that guy?" scenario.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted February 13, 2024 Posted February 13, 2024 Jays will be all over Bellinger if the years come down. I don't think he would want to do another show me contract. But if its 1 year 25-30m he probably has to seriously consider it. That way both he and his agent can still come out looking ok.
Key22 Verified Member Posted February 14, 2024 Posted February 14, 2024 Luxury tax issues now if they sign Bellinger. But if he is willing to take deferred money to lower the tax hit and also willing to take an incentive-laden deal then you can 'overpay' in the perception department as Ohtani's deal initially looked. $700m but mid $450m range in today's dollars. The Jays seem to be willing to do oddball contracts like Chad Green. Bellinger's offensive metrics were atrocious apparently while his traditional numbers looked good. Every team can see the same numbers and I don't see anyone giving him the 200million Boras wants. I'd be surprised at 100/5. Look at Springer. 3 more years of a guy who looked pretty awful. Our new Vernon Wells. AA managed to dump that contract. I am no so confident in Atkins abilities.

Vernon Wells went 1.8 war, 1 war, 0 war, then had a dead cat bounce that AA was able to convince the Angels was legit Springer just had a 2.2 war year, which followed a 4.3 win year. He projects for 2.2-3.0 wins. It's really not that bad at all. Yeah he has negative projected value but the contract isn't big enough for it to be an albatross
wamco Verified Member Posted February 14, 2024 Posted February 14, 2024 Last year bellinger raked against pitches under 95. Pitches over 95, he ranked like 16th worst in mlb per mlb tv network. That scares me

I’m still pissed that Beeston and Rogers did that deal instead of allowing JPR to trade him which at the time was rumoured to the Dodgers for two prospects in Matt Kemp and Chad Billingsly.

wamco Verified Member Posted February 14, 2024 Posted February 14, 2024 So why, exactly, did then-Angels general manager Tony Reagins make the deal? Scott Miller of CBS Sports wrote on the troubled nature of the Los Angeles front office in 2013. “When the decision was made to pursue Vernon Wells from Toronto before the 2011 season, ... it was Moreno, one source says, who threatened then-GM Tony Reagins with a firing if Reagins didn’t consummate the deal within 24 hours. Moreno is described as being chapped at having lost free agent Adrian Beltre to the Rangers roughly two weeks earlier, and that helps explain why, in an agreement that utterly stunned almost everybody in the game, the Angels agreed to pay all but $5 million of the $86 million to a player that Toronto was so eager to offload that the Jays surely could have been persuaded to pay millions more.”

He spends big which is great, but his meddling completely undoes the benefit of having lots of money. He chooses to spend on the wrong guys every time.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2024 Posted February 14, 2024 What year were we trading Wells for Kemp/Billingsly? Probably prior to the 2007 season given the timeline. I vaguely remember a Wells/Kemp rumor but not sure if it was before or after Wells signed the extension. If I recall it was Paul Godfrey who wanted Wells extended, as it was before Beeston came back into the fold.

It was either 2005 or 2006 offseason I remember the rumours being before Wells signed the extension.
