He’ll be opting out after year 7 but good on KC for getting a few more years of team control

If you're willing to include a reliever then Mariano Rivera would have to be considered a generational talent.

Ichiro has got to be close.

Randy Johnson put up 70 WAR in the past 25 years despite not pitching since 2009, he added another 40 in the 10 years prior. Pedro Martinez is a mini-version of that. Those guys probably belong in this 25 year period. But the lines get blurred as I would consider them a part of the previous generation.

100% those 3 are generational. I don't put Harden on that pedestal, but I think Joker is right there. Emiid needs more seasons. Westbrook is close (like Harden)

Yeah Harden and Westbrook I think faded from that generational level too soon, and so prb out of convo

Huge surplus potential on this deal. Kansas City is guaranteed 7 years of control at $18M AAV which is less than what Guerrero will make this year in arbitration. These are the kinds of risks that can lead to championship teams if they allocate the surplus from this deal wisely

I don't think any RP should be considered a generational talent. Randy and Pedro both meet my criteria. I don't consider Ichiro to be generational. I think people overrate those 'pure hitters' like Gywnn and Ichiro (add Rose in there if you want too). I appreciate guys who can hit .350 and rack up 200+ hits year - but neither of them should EVER be discussed as "one of the greatest hitters of all time". Gwynn's career high season was a 154 wRC+, Ichiro's was 131. Even someone like Jeff Bagwell was a SIGNIFICANTLY better hitter than both these slap hitters and nobody ever talks about Bagwell being one of the best hitters of all time.

It definitely helps to actually develop and lock up talent to team friendly deals. The deal is great for KC. AA did the same with the Braves. Jays will need to do that on the next rebuild.

They'll need to avoid signing sons of ex major leaguers if they are to have a chance to lock them up to team friendly deals.

Gotta find some talent first

Ironic because the Royals just signed one today...lol

Witt's deal might end up with him earning $378 million over his career so it's not exactly the most team friendly deal in the history of the sport. On the low end he's guaranteed $289 million so is this even very team friendly to start with?

Its the new reality of the market so I would say yes.

2024: $2 million

2025: $7 million

2026: $13 million

2027: $19 million

2028: $30 million

2029: $35 million

2030: $35 million

Getting 3 FA years for 30-35 per year has a lot of surplus value as does 39M for the 3 arb. years. There is the risk he gets hurt/becomes ineffective in which case the player options will suck for the team but that's just the cost of doing business these days.

This deal basically looks fair for both sides to me. I'm just not seeing this as being particularly team friendly especially given how many opt outs Witt has after 2030.

I like it for both teams. Secures Witt in Royal Blue for 7 years giving them time to build around one of the best young players in Baseball. But also gives him the ability to opt out on his prime to secure maximum dollar. Good for both sides.

Its fair but from the team side I think you have to sign the deal. Alternative is he just leaves for nothing in 4 years. Even if he opts out you got him in his prime/peak years. By 30 hes already going to be declining anyways.

By 2027 it could be 15M/Win on the FA market.

Always remember that today's dollar is worth much less in 10 plus years. I think the Royals did well.

Sends a message to FAs, guys with no trade clauses, season ticket holders etc as well.

Having said that. Blue Jays DO NOT do this with Vlad jr, NOT apples and apples.

Free Agency has also become a dumpster fire and a lot of teams are becoming more reluctant to throw around money to players that aren’t stars. It seems like its only a couple teams throwing around money and everyone else is just looking for steals. Unless the Dodgers or Mets want you. You’re gonna be still looking for a job in February.

MLB really needs to address this somehow. MLB Free Agency is so f***ing boring. NHL, NBA, and NFL all have shows because the best players sign in the first few hours. Salary cap contributes to this yes. But MLB has got to find a way to incentivize signing early.

Hoping to extend Vlad for Matt Olson money. He's younger so tack a couple of player options on it. Then pray Vlad is a Hall of Famer and not the fatass we saw last year. If he's in between the deal still probably works. Not sure Vlad will sign for 10 years 200 mil though. Market is changing since then.

Posted
He was definitely a "generational prospect" and is a HOF but I would say that his MLB career hasn't been quite as phenomenal as some people hoped.

As “disappointing” as Harper has been, if you redid his draft in hindsight he probably still goes 1-1, just slightly ahead of Machado and Sale

I am telling everyone that listens that with Vlad's body type, already (issues affecting him apparently) history of taking care of his body at a young age etc. Vlad is a high, high risk long term investment and that money could be better spent elsewhere. But Soto next year or spend it on BO. (With a clause that he will eventually transition to 2b.

I would NOT make a long term large financial commitment to Vlad.

Do you actually think Bo would agree to a clause that stipulates he's going to be forced to move to second base in the future? The club has zero leverage with Bo given how close he is to free agency at this point.

What is team thought process in regard to 18 m offer when his projected salary is closer to 20.4 by best source? Trying to insult him by motivating him? Thought he’d settle at 19?

I’m being half facetious.. I would honestly not want to stipulate he has to play SS the total term of a 10-11 year deal either though.

Posted
No need to stipulate anything. If Arjun arrives in a few years and is a far better SS, Bo will move or he doesn't get paid. I doubt he will do the "kiss my purple ass" thing.

Look at the new Spring Training hats. I like the Jays one (as does the score) and may need to pick one up. Thank god we've finally moved away from a maple leaf on a hat.

They didn't use it last season. They used the baby blue and dark blue Jay hats, I know cause I ordered one, this one looks sharp too.
