What a sad organization. Imagine being so second-rate that you have to play in a division rival's MiLB park that's named after their owner LMAO. Yankees are literally the Rays' daddy. Now the front office has churned to the point that the nerds of this forum and other places are no longer fellating them for all the cheap and cheesy, I mean, smart and asset-maximizing ways this shitball team used to compete on a budget. Now we have bullpen days in the World Series all thanks to a trend the Rays started, yay!

On the bright side if the Rays end up making the playoffs in 2025, then they might actually sell out their home stadium.

But yes, the Rays should have been relocated.

Yeah defensively he was great last season as well. Would definitely sign him in a heartbeat if he signed for under $5M.

I think we'd be looking at high end backup/low end starter money, maybe in the same neighborhood of the IKF contract (15M/2). The only prediction I can find (Kiley McDaniel) has him at 17.5M/2.

I'd be fine with a two or three year deal in that price range. Still a pretty affordable way to have a key position completely locked down for multiple years.

Skenes ROY

Skenes earns full year of service time

Pirates do not get a bonus pick. Idiots. Hope the 7 starts in the minors were worth it???

Try to manipulate his service time. End up losing the year of control anyway, and then also losing a bonus pick. You love to see it.

Skenes threw less than 7 innings in the minors last season after being signed. I don't really get this critique - were they supposed to throw him directly into the MLB rotation without showing anything? His 7 starts equated to fewer innings pitched than Tim Lincecum had when he exploded his way into SF's rotation.

I didn't watch Skenes pitch before his MLB debut. But unless his stuff and command ticked up dramatically during his 27 innings at AAA, the Pirates had every reason to believe he was a good MLB starter before the season. If they didn't, they need to fire pretty much everyone.

What do you mean yes?

I just checked, and Strasburg made 11 starts for 55 IP's before being called up.

You are only speaking in retrospect because you know after the fact that Skenes (like Strasburg and Lincecum) was a true phenom and could have gone straight to the MLB. But at the time it is still sensible to have him to go out and make a few multi-inning starts to see WTF he looks like over more than 1 inning against professional hitters, regardless of how good he looked at LSU. There were people who thought that guys like Spencer Torkelson and Austin Martin could slot right into an MLB lineup right out of college too, and that turned out to be not the case at all.

It is 2024, guys can throw a few bullpens and you can more or less get reasonable MLB projections of them based on pitch shape

I'm not even saying they HAD to let him debut out of camp. But if they weren't going to, they needed to keep him down long enough so his odds of being ROY were zero.

No cap they made a franchise altering fumble for a small market team

Pirates certainly f***ed that up, they should've called him up on the 21st of April, it was the last day he was eligible and they used him for 3 more starts in AAA, they could have 2 sandwich picks, and a chance at one more next season in the Cy Young voting, but they colossally f***ed that all up. Sucks. :(

The critique is the rules have changed since Lincecum and Strasburg. There's now a risk/reward decision to be made based on the potential to gain draft picks and years of control. The Pirates decisions surrounding Skenes cost them.

Sounds like the Rays new stadium plan for 2028 is in real jeopardy.

The Tampa Bay Rays say the stadium deal is halted due to Pinellas County commissioners delaying bonds to pay for the county's share of the deal.

In a letter written by Rays presidents Brian Auld and Matt Silverman, they say the county's "failure to finalize the bonds last month ended the ability for a 2028 delivery of the ballpark." They go on to write that a 2029 ballpark delivery would be more costly, which the Rays cannot afford to finance alone.

The Rays moving out of St. Pete/Tampa and into a market that might actually give a s*** about them would be the best case scenario.

Did Gil win the ROY based on Wins and ERA?

I know 150 innings from a starter is valuable in today's world, but he was almost half the WAR of Cowser. Skenes's WAR was below Merrill too, but at least he was f***ing dominant...

Absolutely. They should be expediting the move outta St Pete ASAP and looking to move the team.

I have no idea if this is even logistically possible but the Coyotes became Utah HC in like 6 months. The question is what city or cities would be able to make this happen in ~15 months?

It really wasn't 6 months, as Utah were trying to poach that team for quite some time, but I get what you're saying this shitshow should've been taken care of long ago.

According to reports; Michael Kay says the Mets have already told Boras camp they'll go 50M over best offer.

https://www.si.com/mlb/mets/news/yankees-announcer-says-mets-will-outbid-any-team-for-juan-soto-by-this-amount-logan9

Does it even work like that? Doesn't seem like anyone other than Soto's camp would even know what the best offers were do they?

So how would the Mets know what 50M over best offer even is? Just take Scott Boras' word for it?

Yes, I would think so. lol

I don’t think Utah had been trying to poach Arizona. They wanted a team but it happened fast when Bettman approached them and asked if they could take Arizona starting in 2025
