Mountcastle is hurt, may require an IR stint

Man - I feel bad for the Tigers. Two #1 picks and they get Mize and Tork, who both seemingly blow and certainly aren't franchise players. They sign Colt Keith, their new top prospect and he's been terrible and of course they have Javy Baez for another 4 years.

Mize has seen a big stuff+ jump from pre-surgery. Changes his pitch arsenal in a lot of ways. His K rate might just be lagging his talent right now.

Not gonna bother with the rest of this, but at Grayson Rodriguez's age Manoah had a better rookie season in fewer innings, followed by a 4 WAR season and was a Cy Young runner up. Rodriguez could have a good 2024 then blow out his arm due to his higher avg velocity and then they would be on exactly equal grounds. "better development so far" my ass

Manoah also didn't take 5-6 years to develop, for whatever that's worth. lol @ "better development so far"

I'd like to know how the O's fixed Ryan O'Hearn. This guy made Ryan Goins look like Mike Trout for 4 years and almost 1000 PA's, while accumulating a -2.4 WAR. He had 870 PA's in AAA with a wRC+ <90 in 2017/18 and yet the O's pick him off the scrap heap at age 29 and he's been a beast for them and it looks like he's even gotten better this year? What an incredible story.

Perhaps, but he's now in his age 27 season and has 1.6 career WAR. He's a massive bust as the #1 overall pick.

As much as I think the Orioles are geniuses, this one seems just random. His numbers with the Os are like .285 .320 .490 and his numbers with Kansas City were like .220 .290 .390 or something

Like maybe he is true talent .250 .300 .440 and the variation is just luck.

His aaa numbers were up and down, bad in 2018, good in some short spurts after that.,..

k/bb seems bad always...

Nothing really in the old school stats and k/bb that indicates he really improved though maybe the batted ball data says otherwise.

There is like 5 guys in Norfolk ready to take his job I think

I went to Hartford a while ago and lots of people there want to kill Genocide Joe (true story the pro-palestine groups were marching near the stadium). NOT POLITICAL getting to the baseball part...

Basallo looked surprisingly wimpy and is sucking. Thought he was the next legend. Maybe Basallo and Holliday are going to bust.

lol. There are like 10 guys ready to jump in to become replacement superstars if that is the case.

Like the Beaver guy. Bowie has some damn beaver guy and they kept playing 'two beavers are better than one' and the beaver guy hits.

Damn Bassallo has 0 walks

And hasn't caught a game, so I guess they are giving up on that

Crazy he went from like a 12% BB rate in A/A+ last year to having 0 walks in 60 PA's this year.

No. Tigers must be good. They came last every year.... according to the geniuses on this board that makes you good...

Tigers have had just as good a draft position as Orioles last 7 years... better in fact given they are still drafting in the top 10.

To be fair, there is some luck involved with drafting - particularly how strong the top of the draft is some years. Some years you're blessed with a can't miss star like Rutschman and then sometimes you get the 2016 draft, that basically produced nobody (https://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/2016_Amateur_Draft). Almost everyone from the top of the 2018 draft is a bust. Are all of those organizations inept? Did the O's have Grayson Rodriquez as the best player available in that draft and were they laughing at the 10 teams ahead of them for not taking him? Seems doubtful.

Sucking balls and having lot of top picks and lots of picks overall simply increases the odds that you'll "hit" more often IMO.

That's rather harsh. He missed a fair bit of time. A bust is someone that can't even hold a MLB job. Since his age 24 season he's been an average MLB pitcher. xFIP 4.37 in 2021, 4.19 in 2024 so far. I'm discounting his two 2022 starts prior to his going on the IL.

He's no David Clyde or Brien Taylor

Wow, Jose Abreu is like mega cooked.

Astros fall from grace might be here. Not even 2 years ago they won the World Series and had front office superstar James Click running baseball ops. Dude built one of the best bullpens of all time. Jim Crane and Jeff Bagwell then turned full boomer and started making head scratching decisions after one another.

Yeah they do not look good.

The pitching has been wrecked by injuries. They are one of the few teams with the depth to weather it but they are going through some growing pains trying to get the right young guys in place.

On top of it the lineup has major depth issues. The bottom third sucks as does their entire bench outside of Dubon who is a fine UT player and nothing more. Can't believe they walked into 2024 with Jon Singleton as Abreu's backup.

Not much to pull from AAA either. If one of their core regulars got an injury they could be in some deep s***.

If they get their pitching back on track maybe we could trade them Horwitz and Craig Biggio's son for some rotation depth.

Imagine the marketing opportunities for the Astros if they acquired Craig Biggio's son.

Sometimes I can't tell if you're being serious or not, but I'd be all for "selling high" on Biggio right now with the dudes we have chomping at the bit in Buffalo. Barger or Orelvis replacing Biggio would make me very happy

Manoah didn’t take 5-6 years to develop because he was a college guy. Grayson was drafted out of high school. Your point was valid until you said that.

It's still early for the Astros but they haven't looked that great so far and have some concerns. They need to start turning it around quick.

Looks like they're going to start 7-17 if they can't comeback against the Cubs tonight. Gotta hope they finish April with at least 10 wins and have a hot May to turn things around, which is possible. Blue Jays last season were 18-10 in March/April and then went 11-17 in May. We have seen before how teams could turn cold or hot when a new month comes around. Astros are lucky no team in the AL West has ran away with the division. Overall, they need to win around 18-20 games in May or else they could fall further in a hole.

Losing both Valdez and Javier is tough as they're two big pieces to their rotation. Framber is expected back soon from what I've read and they just got Verlander back. Blanco has actually been solid. Gotta hope Brown figures things out, same with JP France.

As for their pen, it's off to a rough start but I'm sure they turn things around. Hader and Pressly aren't going to post 8 ERA's all season, and Abreu is too good of an arm to have an ERA around 5.
