L54 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 He’ll make almost as much as Chapman this year lmao I want to puke
Pinkfloid Verified Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Chapman was likely not interested in coming back here so not much to fault Atkins for. What I can fault him for is every other failed, panicky, resource-wasting move this offseason. True disasterclass. Looks like he's punting on 2024 to go all in for 2025. Probably won't be here to see it through. I mean, would you trust Atkins successfully going after a player like Soto?
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Really don’t understand why some of you had an expectation Chapman was coming back. It was pretty clear after the season and if any doubt, they signed IFK. This team is going to have a hard time getting a wild card.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Opt outs ..it's basically a 1 year deal. Means he was never a real option. Guaranteed he was offered more at some point early on Perfect deal for Toronto Here Matt 20M and you can opt out Insufficient funds? Wat?

Well the expectation came from the idea that his market cratered and you could get him at a discount It was a dream, but felt like it could happen
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 What a soul crushing offseason.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 I really hope that this was a case of Matt Chapman's forearms scaring Ross Atkins too much and they Donaldson'd his way out of the city under any and every circumstance. As opposed to a result of extreme baseball and salary mismanagement. Atkins only wants flabby out of shape players so when they get into a physical fight with him, they tire out before completely kicking his ass. I want to throw every nerdy beta male white guy with those stupid black-framed glasses into the sun right now. That's it. Ross Atkins has made me hate an entire demographic of people even more than I already hated them.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Well the expectation came from the idea that his market cratered and you could get him at a discount It was a dream, but felt like it could happen We threw all that away just to sign guys who are replicates of players we already have. Some great strategy from our front office in a crucial year before Vlad/Bo decisions have to be made.
deanmike Verified Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 (edited) Hypothetical Pivot Scenario (since it's been widely expected the Giants would explore a JD Davis trade if they got Chapman) Jays trade Espinal to the Giants for JD Davis (BTV surplus value gain of 4.3 for Atkins, not quite the 5+ he almost always gets but not egregiously below). Jays remain under the 2nd threshold post trade since they're roughly 6.3M below it now (assuming Vogelbach makes the team) and the AAV swap of Espinal/Davis is less than that. C Jansen/Kirk 1B Vlad 2B Schneider 3B Davis SS Bichette LF Varsho CF Kiermaier RF Springer DH Turner Bench: Biggio, Vogelbach, IKF Thoughts? Edited March 2, 2024 by deanmike
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 This this this. Its not just IKF vs Chapman, its the KK signing that puts it over the top for me when we had a massive hole at 3B and CF was already filled. Yeah, I just don’t see why he was so in a hurry to sign those two, plus Turner. Yes it’s not ideal to head into spring training with holes in the roster but when the alternative is overpaying for 1-2 WAR talent (almost entirely because of defense), then just wait it out. Worst case you miss out and have to put Schneider in LF, or Roden, or Barger, or whoever, but Chapman at 3B and one of those guys in LF is likely better than what the Jays have at the moment. I’d have more respect for Atkins if he just played the prospects at this point and lived with the consequences. Just use KK and IFK as expensive bench depth. Won’t happen though.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Hahahaha Wait for it, it’s coming…. Well IKF is a 2 WAR defender at third and IF he just squeaks a little bit more out of the bat he might be a 3 WAR player for 7.5M and we are getting so much surplus value Brownie and Max post incoming!
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Travesty of an offseason. The big addition being 39 year old Justin Turner Worded perfectly. Atkins hasn't taken advantage of this so-called window, which is very unfortunate. Seems like they're happy being a borderline WC team every season.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Another one is Chad Green. You don’t pay a setup man 10.5M if it means you can’t afford 18M for a 3-war 3B Chad Green was not a bargain.

The IFK signing reminds me of when we signed Morales because we didn't want to wait around for Edwin for no f***ing reason. Arrgghhh Deja vu!
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Unless Chapman hated it in Toronto or something Shapiro should have Ross walked out by security tomorrow. Disastrous, embarrassing offseason. Yeah very disappointing offseason. This team really never made any additions that greatly improved the roster. If anything, they likely will be worse. Have to hope Bo and Vlad both have MVP caliber years and hope for some bounce backs from Kirk, Varsho, Springer and Manoah.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Any goodwill that Atkins gained with me by making the Jays appear to be a serious contender for Ohtani has now been completely flushed down the toilet. I imagine most other people feel the same.

Arrgghhh Atkins admitted that mistake, hasn't learned from it though, too bad we could have easily done 20/18/16 for Chapman
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Author Posted March 2, 2024 Perfect deal for Toronto Here Matt 20M and you can opt out Insufficient funds? Wat? Hard to say, I doubt these agents get an offer from a team and then just call every other team saying here's what I have in hand...beat it if you want. I know it's easy to point and say "why didn't the Jays sign this guy for that?" The dynamic at this point is probably Chapman picking a team that he wants to play for and getting a s good a deal as he can. To be fair, if he opts out after this season, he took less money than the QO was.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Author Posted March 2, 2024 Atkins admitted that mistake, hasn't learned from it though, too bad we could have easily done 20/18/16 for Chapman The extension he turned down from TO was rumoured (though not confirmed) at a 4 or 5 year extension worth 100 million.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 The extension he turned down from TO was rumoured (though not confirmed) at a 4 or 5 year extension worth 100 million. Still don't understand how we go from having money for that type of extension offer to not being to get him back for what he signed for. Technically we should have been able to sign IFK and get Chappy between the difference of what he got to what he was originally offered.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 The extension he turned down from TO was rumoured (though not confirmed) at a 4 or 5 year extension worth 100 million. then Atkins pivoted and signed IKF, I mean just swallow your pride and get it done - but I guess the GM's like seeing the players squirm just a few weeks before the season starts

I would take less in 2024 to guarantee myself 3x the money too It has really put an exclamation mark on the offseason. In isolation you can justify any of the moves, but as a whole it has been massively underwhelming
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Brownie and Max post incoming! Brownie owes a lot of people a lot of apologies

Technically we should have been able to sign IFK and get Chappy between the difference of what he got to what he was originally offered. Because we already signed 4 other guys (Green/IKF/KK/Turner) totalling about 40 million, not wanting to meet Chapmans's price or wait on him. A mistake.

Laika Community Moderator Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Yeah not even I can defend this Atkins off-season is like when you play an auction draft in exactly the wrong way. 1. Try to get the elite players but just miss 2. Correctly don't react and overpay for the second tier guys 3. BUT completely panic that you'll get nobody shortly thereafter, and blow your budget on oatmeal 4. Watch someone else pay less money for better players, later 21.5M for an amalgam (Turner and IKF) that probably combine for 3 WAR while taking up two roster spots... while the incumbent 3 WAR 3B ends up signed for less. Sweet.
