jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2024 Posted January 7, 2024 Zach Plesac signed for 1 million with the Angels....sick change-up...nice slider.. decent heater with pretty good command. Why can't we do stuff like this..... Higher percentages that he gets a rotation spot with the Angels versus a team like the Blue Jays. A lot of these types of arms will sign with teams like the Angels, Rockies, A's, Nationals, etc.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted January 7, 2024 Posted January 7, 2024 Just on the Biggio thing I think if he was having a more consistent strikezone called he would likely have a higher batting average as he wouldn’t need to expand as frequently. I thought I’d read something along the lines of since his call up he has by far the most strikes called against him in baseball on pitches out of the zone. I know Schneider had a shitload against him in his debut as well and Belt had the same issue. It’s like having a good eye is punished

Just like a pitcher needs to adjust if he is not getting the call on the corner or low strikes etc. Biggio has been here a while now and MLB umps are supposed to be better than MILB umps. Regardless, Biggio can’t hit the high fastball. The league knows it and it was painfully obvious against the Twins in the WC games.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2024 Posted January 7, 2024 With all the arms available, shocked some of these arms are getting 2-year deals worth that much in terms of AAV like Giolito, but I suppose some of these teams banking on their upside. Manaea was a 3 WAR pitcher in 2021 and wasn't as bad as his ERA indicated last season. Plus Citi Field helps as well. If he opts out, means he had a 3 WAR season. So benefit to both him and the Mets. If he's average like 1.5-2 WAR, it's not the end of the world.
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 7, 2024 Posted January 7, 2024 Senga Quintana Severino Manaea Houser? That's a lot of question marks after Senga. I think their rotation is going to be held together with duct tape and prayers again.

The Boston Front office is a joke. They Trade Sale so they lose 150 innings of 3.50 xfip and now they want to trade Yoshida. Hope they do so we don't have to face that dangerous bat.

I don't think it would be terribly productive for marginal hit tool players such as Biggio and Schneider to be expanding their zones. These guys are likely a bit lacking in hand eye coordination to start with so wouldn't have the same ability to foul off borderline pitches in the manner that someone like Bo Bichette can do. If they did manage to make contact on these pitches that they know aren't strikes to start with they would most likely end up creating very weak contact leading to a probable out. The overwhelming majority of Biggio's offensive contributions come from his ability to lay off of pitches out of the strike zone, and swinging the bat more at marginal pitches would only serve to lessen his already marginal offensive output.

Laika Community Moderator Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 Teo to the Dodgers for one year $23 million Amazing deal for LA. The pillow deal people wanted him to sign here. Dodgers To Sign Teoscar Hernandez January 7th, 2024 at 8:47pm CST • By Mark Polishuk The Dodgers have agreed to a one-year, $23.5MM deal with outfielder Teoscar Hernandez, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan (X links). Only $15MM of that salary will be paid to Hernandez this year, as the rest is deferred and will be paid out in installments from 2030-39. Reporter Moises Fabian (via X) was first with the news that Hernandez had signed with Los Angeles. Hernandez is represented by Republik Sports.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 Teo to the Dodgers for one year $23 million And of course a large portion of his deal is deferred. MLB needs to get a handle on this in the next CBA as the Dodgers are making a complete mockery of the luxury tax.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 Teo to the Dodgers for one year $23 million Seems pretty steep. But its the Dodgers, so he’s gonna put up 4 WAR as a DH or something. Wonder how much Joc will cost…

Was no one willing to sign Teo for more than 2 years at 18 to 19 mil a year? Big gamble on his part if he had a 3 or 4 year deal on the table. A repeat of last year and his offers will be cut in half next year.

Guessing he had some 3 year offers but chose to bet on himself He's young enough that one big year could = massive contract And he picked the best team possible. Good hitters park, he could win the world series and have 140 RBI haha
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 How exactly are they dodging the luxury tax here, max? By dramatically lowering their 2023 luxury tax hit by deferring a huge chunk of the salary to future years. From what I can gather this includes Ohtani, Betts, and now Hernandez as players who have accepted deferred payments instead of present day salary. How much is this lowering the Dodger's 2023 luxury tax hit as a result? I get that the "present value" of these deals is less but it just doesn't sit with me well that the total value of these deals isn't simply averaged out over the length of the actual contract for luxury tax purposes. This is allowing the Dodgers to essentially assemble a super team and not be hit with the appropriate luxury tax penalties as a direct result.

The CBA needs some changes next time around.

They are being taxed appropriately $1M that you have to wait 6 years to get is simply not worth $1M today. Kind of common sense, bro
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 Also, just realized Ohtani is the full-time DH for them lol. Teoscar fulltime OF?? Doesn’t seem like a great plan

Kind of common sense, bro Are you just completely misunderstanding the entire point of the luxury tax? How is this any different from signing Ohtani to a 30 year deal to lower the AAV (which I believe MLB has blocked contracts like that as recently as last year) It’s blatant manipulation to pay less luxury tax money and assemble a better team.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 If you have an issue with the Dodgers deferring payments... ... It really has nothing to do with the luxury tax. The issue is more like, preferential systems for certain owners. They are owned by a hedge fund. No other team can really do this at this scale. There is something going on with how the dodgers are selling these deferred payments to these players ..
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 Also, just realized Ohtani is the full-time DH for them lol. Teoscar fulltime OF?? Doesn’t seem like a great plan Teo had a really good defensive season and has generally rated as slightly below average defensively in a corner outfield spot so he should be just fine playing nearly every day.

The Dodgers luxury tax payroll is at 300 mil and they will likely add another 30 mil in payroll, plus the 50 mil posting fee which doesn't count against the luxury tax. I mean their total outlay in dollars will be close to a half billion at the end of the day.

Laika Community Moderator Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 Since when? It's amazing for HR. Lots don't realize this but it's like top 3. Close to neutral overall but fantastic for Hernandez. Statcast 3 year rolling park factors for right handed homers.... tied #1 with GAB
Sorrow Verified Member Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 Im fine with deferring payments but the tax hit should be the full dollar value averaged over the contract term not including deferrals. A player with a team for 5 years at 25m/season with 22m deferred per season should count as 25m on the tax in my opinion.
