G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 So the offense is going be average at best once again Gotcha
Marew Verified Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 We won in 92 and 93. Don’t know what more anyone could want.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 Yankees get Soto We get Kiner-Fluffer Brutal. Just brutal.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 f*** me. If we've turned into the Yankees and are spending that level of money on back ups, can we start spending some big money on some real players. He is $5M more than Espi. He is only $5.5M more than what we are paying DeJong. He is insurance. He may get 500 PA. That probably means that Barger, schnieder, Bo, Biggio sucked or got hurt. Not a good scenario but in the end it is likely Espi he is taking PAs away from. Espi still has options but also if they believe that last year's Santiago is the real player, maybe they just walk away
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 Yeah, don't kid yourselves folks, he is going to get his PA's. I assume this means we're out on Chapman which isn't a bad thing. Can't deny IKF's versatility.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 We're not out on Chappy, Jay's might get him
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 This is going to be a brutal off-season.. 4th in the AL East, book it.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 KK and IKF give us quality veteran defensive depth. They serve a clear purpose and aren't in any way preventing bigger moves from taking place. Glad they are willing to spend $18M on guys we can actually stand to watch for ~ 300 PAs each and who have clear standout defensive ability, rather than the AAAA/waiver fodder we've endured in the past. At a difference of 4-5M per, gladly will take IKF over Espinal, assuming that's the plan.

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 Espinal had one season here with nearly 500 PAs, sandwiched between two where he had around 250. It will come down to how the cookie crumbles regarding injuries etc.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 Why would the Jays start an inferior player in Varsho to KK. Oh wait, they think he's going to turn it around and hit..lol. Varsho sucks. My dude he’s had 1 bad year, with a new club where he was trying to make an impression. Lets see how he looks in 2024 before calling him a waste
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 People really overvalue Moreno. They look at his BRef and thinks it good but the defensive numbers are broken similar to how Lawrie broke fWAR when he first came up. Look at WARP where Moreno was worth 0.3 WAR because of bad framing, receiving and D or fWAR where he was a similar catcher to Jansen for value and Jansen missed half the year with broken fingers. Quite literally teams didn’t want Kirk because of his second half struggles and general build, Jansen they had health concerns with and Moreno they didn’t think the bat was going to come around enough to make up for the D. The original offer for Moreno was McCarthy or whatever his name is and that was it until the Jays added Gurriel. People are putting way too much stock into Moreno having a hot 2 weeks in the playoffs. Recency bias, it is was it is.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 I swear... didn't Spanky call this signing with the exact terms? He has sources?
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 In the end this comes down to the usual. Fans want bats. There are people here who want old bats who project for less wins than IKF who might have a slightly higher ceiling (bats can be protected a little by maximizing their best scenarios) but in the end this is equal or better value. It is a s***** free agent year and Jays need depth if they are going to delve into the trade market mid season or even next off season

It is a s***** free agent year and Jays need depth if they are going to delve into the trade market mid season or even next off season Last year’s iteration of the Jays was the most boring in recent memory. Offense-heavy teams are just more fun than pitching/D teams. They just are. I think all of us were hoping for a more balanced team with more focus on offense next season, but so far this offseason looks like more focus on D
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 He’s a 1.5 WAR infielder. If you put him in a corner OF spot more than anywhere else (like the Yankees did) it craters his defense as well as his positional value and you end up with 0 WAR. Have to assume Espinal is getting traded.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Author Posted December 27, 2023 I swear... didn't Spanky call this signing with the exact terms? He has sources? Yup, IKF next... IKF 2/15... a little birdie told me. You mean this, lol... same source gave me KK on Christmas day the next morning sign on the 26th for exact term.

I said so many times throughout the season that last year's Jays were the worst good jays team I've ever seen. It was so painful to watch and they still won 89 games. Need 2 impact bats in the lineup and so far we've gone backwards. Let's see what's next.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 If, if he is purely a depth piece, super utility. I am fine with this and it is a good pick-up. Could be a Marco Scuturo 2.0. However, my spider senses are tingling that he will be our opening day 3b, or maybe a combo of him and Biggio. Both thoughts make me puke. Just have to wait and see.
Cbert Verified Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 Is Spanky this KingSarcasm guy that’s blown up Twitter with these signings the past two days?? Lol
deanmike Verified Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 Is Spanky this KingSarcasm guy that’s blown up Twitter with these signings the past two days?? Lol I doubt it. KingSarcasm got his KK info before his IKF info (which at first he said as just "unnamed player signing incoming 15/2"). Spanky straight up said IKF 15/2, and I'm pretty sure he said he got his KK info after IKF. KingSarcasm got it the other way around.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 Say we sign Joc Pederson. IKF allows us to DH Jansen or Kirk against lefties and we’d still have a backup C.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 Say we sign Joc Pederson. IKF allows us to DH Jansen or Kirk against lefties and we’d still have a backup C. Isn't that what Varsho's for? Lol

Same source per se, I assume.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Author Posted December 27, 2023 Isn't that what Varsho's for? Lol No. When you have the DRS leader in the MLB out there, he isn't f***ing catching.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 Great for 162 not for October Is there a move this year left that is an "October" move? Is giving some kids a chance and maybe trading depth not a potential "October" move. This team is as good as several players making improvments will take them. If they become a 117 wRC+ team with a repeat of their pitching numbers what are they? That probably makes them an additional +100 differential team. I mean that would be Texas offense last year with our pitching. It is probably the 2nd best team in baseball in that scenario. It is an all things going right scenario but that is still this teams upside
