So what side of the rubber fence do you fall on, can't have it both ways? We don't Live in Mamby-Pamby Land you Jackwagons!

What the F are you bickering about now?

I responded to Jim's post about the comment he made on how every game would be filled to the rafters. I said if the Blue Jays are winning and if Ohtani stays healthy, for sure they likely sell out every game. What is wrong with that comment?

If the Jays start to become a losing team and/or if Ohtani is hurt, every game won't be "filled to the rafters." Heck did the Angels sell out every game with both Ohtani and Trout? Did the Rangers sell out every game when they signed A-Rod to the biggest FA contract at the time? Even when the Jays had Rogers Clemens pitch, the SkyDome wasn't "filled to the rafters." At the end of the day, team success will impact attendance the most. If the Jays remain competitive and win between 90-100 games per season, shouldn't be a problem. If they become a 75-80 win team down the road, and Ohtani spends some time on the IL when he gets older, every game won't be "filled to the rafters."

Don't understand why you're asking me what side of the rubber fence I fall on. You're an idiot.

I love how you've been banging on the "Jays need a star player" drum all year and now that we are finalists for Ohtani (the biggest star in baseball since Babe Ruth) you give a qualified "I'd love to have him BUT he's 30 years old and it's a lot of money..." lol

I responded to Jim's comment about the Jay's selling out every game with Ohtani here. They will if they remain competitive and if Ohtani stays healthy. Don't know what is so controversial in stating that. Team success at the end of the day has the bigger impact on attendance. Doesn't matter which star players you have. If you aren't winning or competitive, that will impact attendance more than anything.

I've stated many times I'm in favour of the Jays going after Ohtani and how it would be fantastic for the city and country overall. Also, I'm a realist and understand that signing him to a huge contract does come with some risk later on, especially if he just sticks as a DH/corner OF. That's with any big FA deal FFS!

You can't read what I actually post. You need some courses in reading comprehension.

Yes or no? Fool.

I call Ohtani back to the Angels in mild shocker

Of the four teams still being reported as in I’d rank them last

As usual, you guys just can’t understand anything other than the number 1 and 2. Jays are run like a business. Other teams are run without the bottom line being so important. You can’t understand the diff?

Well if this is the case then please explain to me how the Padres are being run without the bottom line being so important? They are trading one of the top 5 players in baseball in order to cut payroll. Seems like the bottomline bit them in the ass just ONE YEAR later.

But you can't admit it because then you'd have to take an L.

So instead you are trying to hold the position that the small market Padres spending so much is GOOD (even though there are obvious and immediate consequences). But if the Jays, a bigger market with wealthier owners, sign Ohtani somehow that is BAD. Because of reasons that make no sense.

I'd probably just take the L but if you want to try and warp some sort of bizarre reasoning around this garbage logic you can try but no one will buy it.

I'd probably go with "wet blanket" lol

I remember being on the edge of my seat when we were going after Springer. Ohtani might get 4 times his contract. Ridiculous to think that lol.

Will ohtani be pitching effectively after 2 TJs? Signing a dh to the biggest contract in the league does seem risky.

If he dosnt pitch he becomes a outfielder. Most likely a gold glove caliber outfielder.

Would he still generate all that hype and revenue if he's just an outfielder?

Ichiro and his sharp singles was a pretty big thing in his hey day.

He'll still be one hell of an outfielder, but you're asking some pretty valid questions - there's a whole lot of risk for whichever team ends up signing him.

I think he’s a big enough name now to still generate revenue/hype but without the “Babe Ruth” aura of being a two way player, it’s difficult to say how sustainable that is. As a great RF, he becomes a bit more human rather than the unicorn he has been.

One thing that I don't think has been brought up yet...

What's Canada's most famous company internationally? Blackberry? Magna? Royal Bank, maybe? First Quantum (for all the wrong reasons)?

In Canada's system of oligarchs and oligopolies, they make plenty of money squeezing the middle class and helping the rich launder or hide their money. But they aren't really that well known like Apple or Microsoft. Signing Ohtani would be a power move by Rogers to get on the global stage in what would generally be considered a positive manner by everyone except commies. This isn't just about jersey or ticket sales or even TV in Canada. Based on Ohtani's popularity, Rogers could make the contract back and more just in Japanese/Asian-based revenue streams. And that would be a stepping stone to all sorts of international endeavours.

Rogers has to be looking at the state of the eroding middle class, high rents and mortgages etc. in Canada and be thinking "yeah, this isn't going to end well for the growth prospects of our $200/month entertainment packages if we don't do something impactful".

This doesn’t make sense from a business perspective. What footprint or businesses or services does Rogers have in Japan that it could boost or enhance? Nothing that I can determine..

Rogers isn’t even in the US or Mexico let alone Japan..

I don’t see the business case…

None that I'm aware of. And I'm not proposing that they try to expand their telecom business there. Too much capex. But it couldn't be that hard to expand the media division into Japan.

Except for foreign ownership rules, a saturated market and Japanese required to have a TV license for their TVs.. No way in hell Rogers could start broadcasting in Japan.

What they could do, and not sure how much MLB takes from the trough, sell international simulcast rights to the Japanese for a much higher amount then they do now if that stream contains a Blue Jay/Ohtani game.

Will you just let me have my reasonings for getting excited at the possibility of this actually happening and leave me in peace? Jeez.

Well to make you feel better. An Ohtani signing would drastically increase all Rogers baseball assets. Including Team value, viewers, greater add revenue, butts in the seats, and their would for sure be ancillary rewards of people buying broadcast packages, maybe even more internet and cell services.

For Rogers you could look at it as a 500 million (700 million CDN?) overall business investment and not just a baseball team investment. A player you could actually get an ROI on and not just by the team specific revenue streams.

Even if he pitches like a 3 for 2025-2030 it's fine.

Understanding that whatever length of deal he gets, there's probably a decent chance he'll have some opt outs along the way.

Can Ohtani even play OF this year? If he can't pitch due to Tommy John, doesn't OF require throwing the ball to the infield to catch runners? I'm not sure about the mechanics of the surgery, but I always wondered about that when I read people speculating about him playing outfield this year

Ohtani never plays OF any more - He's been purely a DH for the Angels offensively

He only ever played 7 games in the OF his whole time there

I don't think anyone would risk playing him the OF in 2024
