connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 He's going to respond that this was predictable because the Diamonbacks have stars. I wish you luck. Unlike the Jays, I think once Woodruff goes down, with Corbin/Gallen and crew, I like that bet a lot. As I said, they got lucky they Kershae s*** the bed, but LAD didn’t do themselves any favors going into the playoffs with so many questions on the mound after Clayton. Total wins doesn’t matter as much as the team you are going into the playoffs
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Author Posted October 12, 2023 The particulars don’t actually matter. My point boils down to: what was the expected outcome of a Suarez vs. Strider start in Atlanta? Did that outcome occur? And based on those two answers, is this series a good example of how a short series isn’t meaningfully impacted by random chance? Yeah I don't think anyone rational here isn't disagreeing that a short series can be very random. Phillies aren't actually a pushover in any series. For a WC team, they're quite strong in comparison to let's say Miami for example. They also got to the World Series last year as a borderline WC team who got hot at the right time, but that experience IMO does help them. Philly definitely had the advantage winning Game 1 with Suarez, since Wheeler and Nola followed. Braves had an epic comeback in Game 2. So far Game 3 has been a slugfest for Philly. We'll see what Game 4 brings. But yeah there is a very good chance Philly could knockout the Braves in the DS. Even before the series started, I said to some of my friends that Braves/Phillies DS series isn't going to be an easy one for the Braves.

Total wins doesn’t matter as much as the team you are going into the playoffs Yeah Dodgers and Brewers had a lot of question marks heading into the Postseason regarding their pitching. Woodruff is a huge loss. Dodgers pretty much just had Kershaw/Miller as their No. 1/2. Lynn is their No. 3 and if they make the NLCS, Ryan Pepiot might actually be making a start lol. Regardless, great time to face them in a short series. Still the WC and DS are short series and random. But yeah the D'Backs had a lot working in their favour.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Good chance the f'ing White Sox could win a WC series against Minny if they got in. Reasonable to say a short series is 50% crapshoot and 50% team quality.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Abreu had the exact same 86 wRC+ as Varsho in ‘23. 3 HRs in last 2 games. Playoffs.

Reasonable to say a short series is 50% crapshoot and 50% team quality. You can’t disagree with this. You want to skip the wildcard if possible and have the highest probability of a winning result in the subsequent series. Houston was the best team last year and got it done. Doesn’t always happen in every sport. My Bruins last year hero to zero when the puck dropped in the playoffs. LAD ATL on the brink. BAL gone. 100 wins and history for ‘23.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 I agree with you to an extent. Yes the Postseason especially a short series like the WC and DS can be random. Though the Blue Jays never really showed us anything over 162 games other than their dominant rotation, bullpen and fielding. The lineup over 162 was as frustrating to watch as ever. It's not like the Jays bats just went cold in their series against the Twins. They pretty much were awful since the end of April. Arizona actually was leading the NL West for a certain amount of time, I believe even in June. As well, they have a young exciting core led by Carroll who could be a difference maker in a short series and two solid arms in Gallen and Kelly. They definitely were meant for a short series. Additionally, they ran into a Brewers team that was without Woodruff in that WC series and also a Dodgers rotation that wasn't 100% healthy. I would still rather the Jays produce regular seasons like the Dodgers or Braves on a consistent basis, rather than be a borderline WC team during the regular season. But regardless, will take a WS anyway we can get one. Jays win 89 games in the toughest division in baseball with a plus 75 RD. "They were actually bad other than a dominant rotation, bullpen and fielding because the offense was bad." The D-Bags win 84 games with a -15 RD while scoring the same amount of runs as us despite playing in one of the best offensive environments. "They are actually good because they have an exciting core and two good pitchers."
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Ryan Pressly went 3-2 on all three hitters and struck them all out Three absolutely wicked full count whiff pitches Nails.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 7th consecutive trip to the ALCS for HOU. Awesome run. Wow.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 RIP Dodgers lol. f***in Moreno eh
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Lance Lynn 4 dingers in the 3rd inning?
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Moreno. First ballot hall of famer. Book it. lol.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Lol what a sequence of events with Moreno. Goddamn
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Sigh. Moreno is a superstar isn't he.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Watching the Dbacks run makes me so sad.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Lol what a sequence of events with Moreno. Goddamn Holy s***, no kidding!! He hits what was called a homerun, the umps changed it to a foul ball and did a crew chief review to NY, Confirmed foul, so Moreno comes back up and smashes the next pitch dead centre for a HR. WOW.
TorontonianJD Verified Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Another reason Atkins should be fired. What a mistake that Moreno trade was. Now we are stuck with Varsho. Kirk should have been the one traded.
june.june Verified Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 I really wanted to move on from this trade but watching Moreno smothered that ball, I wanted to kick the living daylights of Ross Idiot Atkins.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Everybody wanted Dodgers v Braves Gonna get DBacks v Phillies

Kirk should have been the one traded. True, I have no idea why they kept the fatty instead. Most rankings had Kirk as a top 10 or top 5 catcher after his 2022 performance. He had more value than Moreno at the time of the trade.

Like Matt Chapman is supposedly a 4 win player and really going into the series, he’s a liability. Someone like Moreno is on the other side of the spectrum
Masterbather Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Everybody wanted Dodgers v Braves Gonna get DBacks v Phillies Since I've adopted the d-backs as my team once the Blue Jays went out, speak for yourself. I would actually enjoy the Phillies and the d-backs. I didn't really care for watching Atlanta and the Dodgers. I don't like horrible underdogs but I like fun underdogs with some star power.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Varsho would have caught that
TorontonianJD Verified Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Moreno deal moving up the Thorometer in Jays trade history. Let’s hope to f*** Mighty Mouse plays CF and hits the ball a lot better in 2024. I think it will go down as the worst trade in Jays history. Atkins has single handedly ruined this team.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Everybody wanted Dodgers v Braves Gonna get DBacks v Phillies Braves and Phillies is really close. I think obviously tv people give the nod to Philly, and that’s bc they follow the casuals
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Varsho would have caught that Luckily for AZ they are up 4-0 from 4 bombs so they don’t really care that much.
