Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2024 Posted November 5, 2024 I actually talked to a few folks in the Jays organization for a potential job during covid but the pay was a massive issue. They pay knowing many folks want to be part of the organization. Sucks because it would have been a dream. Yeah so many people are willing to work in baseball that they are able to get away with paying almost nothing. I went to the winter meetings once and attended the job fair and 90 percent of the jobs were selling minor league tickets in the middle of nowhere. The substantive jobs were either minimum wage jobs or unpaid internships. On top of it, the industry is ripe with nepotism.

Nice, we are officially in Carlos Baerga season. I assume he gets all of his news from drinking beer and bullshitting with his old MLB buddies in Puerto Rico.

Ray Verified Member Posted November 7, 2024 Posted November 7, 2024 I don’t know that Baerga is really that credible anymore considering his primary source was 100% Charlie Montoyo. That being said, IF true, what’s on the table is probably very similar to the Devers contract. That’s probably as I high as I would go for him too.

I really can't see Vlad being traded before the season starts, but I could believe the contract rumor.

He was particularly stressed out when his last defenders (Spanky and I) jumped ship.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2024 Posted November 8, 2024 We know how this front office works. I truly feel they lowballed him in the first offer, which is fine and all, as long as they comeback and pay him Devers money.
Key22 Verified Member Posted November 9, 2024 Posted November 9, 2024 If Soto gets $600m then you would have to believe Vladdy would get something like $400/13. He'd likely want to beat Devers and he'd want an AAV at least above his arbitration value. And he'd probably want to crack the $400m club. It's a lot when you could sign other good bats like Santander and Alonso for like 4 years and try to develop someone to take over. Maybe sign Adames for 6 years on top. Then trade Guerrero to beef up the farm system. Those three guys will cost but you save the $30m arb on Guerrero that can be put to those three guys. The line-up would be longer and more homerun power and you have a better defence (likely) in Adames as he should bounce back. You get three higher-end prospects than what we got for Kikuchi. Or if they feel like spending keep Vladdy for the year and let him walk for the draft picks. We don't know what Vladdy wants, but I suspect it's $400m. If Soto is $600m, that makes sense—Vladdy is more than half the player of Soto especially if Vladdy is viewed as a "competently mediocre" third baseman.

It's going to be a massive amount for an all bat, no defense, no base running, no IQ player. Like signing Manny Ramirez.

I have always stated that I believed in Vlad but also don't trust fattys. Guys that don't show true commitment to their bodies and only start when there's a big payday on the line are scary to forecast longterm. I'd only give him a 10 year deal if there were some weight clauses like Zion's does in the NBA. The decisions need to be made whether he and Bo stay long term with the franchise like yesterday. You can't let them enter the season without an extension.

You can't let them enter the season without an extension. You most definitely CAN enter the season with both on their last year. Might actually be better that way. If you extend either, you 100% are not trading them at the deadline. Best course of action if Vlad won’t sign a semi-discounted deal is to just let things play out. Trade both guys at the deadline if the team is out of it. If the team looks good in July, then go for it. Can still negotiate with Vlad in free agency and sign him back. And if someone else wants to give him 400 million, you let him walk.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 Idk I generally feel like when you have a home grown star player you either extend them before free agency or trade them with 1+ years of control left if you can't get a deal done. Letting Vladdy and Bo walk for two sandwich round picks would suck, especially if the team isn't competitive next year. Unfortunately, both the team and these two players have made it difficult at this point.

Unfortunately, both the team and these two players have made it difficult at this point. We know Bo isn’t signing here, and he was atrocious last season. Trade value at an all-time low, might as well let him go beastmode for the FA contract. Vlad clearly isn’t giving the Jays a discount. You either extend him for market value, or wait til he’s a free agent. Could trade him, but the fans would absolutely hate it. And his value was probably highest last deadline and they decided to hold him so I don’t see a trade coming. Again, this isn’t necessarily the course I would take. But the front office has made it clear they want to compete in 2025. If you can’t extend them you just keep them and let them play out the year.

You're totally right re: Vladdy, but the front office is intent on 'extending the window' and trying to compete next year. Bo would be cents on the dollar after the atrocious showing last year - might as well let him play this season.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 I’m pro extending Vladdy but it needs to have risk for both parties not just the Jays. Guerrero has had two good seasons in his career and been league average or worse every other season, he’s a poor defender at 1B but looked better at 3rd in 2024 so maybe you move him over. He’s also had a number of leg and wrist injuries which is a concern. People keep comparing him to someone like Ramirez but Ramirez is more like Soto. Poor D but an elite bay year after year while Guerreros best offensive seasons are an average Soto season.

That's the problem. I'm down for: Extending Vladdy at market value right now Letting Bo try to have a good season in his walk year in 2025. If the team is doing well and he's playing well, great. Enjoy the ride. If the team sucks but he's playing well trade him at the deadline.

Unfortunately, I suspect Guerrero's camp think he's a proven, highly marketable, elite superstar with little to no risk given his age and most recent season. It's a real tough spot for a relatively conservative front office like the Jays. You're rolling the dice whether you resign him at crazy dollars or if you move him for a prospect package.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 Clement and Pop qualify for Super 2 status. Doesn't matter much at the end of the day since neither will make much the first time, and Pop should be released anyways

Because I don’t think Vlad should get over 300. But maybe for him, the number is 400. This may just need to play out in free agency next year
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 I'm fine with letting both enter free agency. With the big market spenders looking to blow their load this year, I think next offseason will be a buyer's market. As for trades at the deadline, if the Jays are out of it, it'll be because they both performed poorly and the return will be s***. Bichette's 5 WAR decline is the reason why the Jays didn't compete for a playoff spot this year.
