This is why you never grade signings in hindsight, just the process that led to them. If the Jays in 2021 had gone deep like they could have, the signing looks a lot better. But it doesnt change the reality that as soon as the ink was dry they knew the last few years were going to be s***. They all knew it was a possibility. It may be happening faster than they thought...or his decline might be steeper, but they knew going in.

 

Same thing every team knows about all the longer term contracts, they all turn to s*** at some point.

 

So, a team really only had 2 choices...sign big name FAs when you can to improve your team on the short term amd live with the fallout, or...never sign big name FAs.

 

There's not very many franchises that have consistently ran deep in the playoffs for long periods of time without signing them though. Low spending teams can still pop up every once in a while, but they never sustain it long term. Even the Rays magic well has been running dry.

The Jays don't have much to trade but trading for one of their needs in the form of a player who is somewhere in years 3-6 in service time would take some of the financial pressure off. There will be some teams that are shedding payroll, especially those who have uncertainty with their local TV rights. Or if you feel 2024 was a blip then see if buying low on Luis Robert is on the table. Something along those lines. Throwing FA money at all of their problems is going to be impossible. They'll need to hit on a trade or a cost effective pickup that really works out.

I believe it but at the same time you have Justin Turner and others saying it's a top-notch organization.

 

It's probably just one of those things where the losing creates the discontent, and it isn't the discontent that is creating the losing.

 

Win enough games to make the playoffs and this kind of stuff probably goes away.

I wonder how many clubhouses would have at least 1 disgruntled player willing to call the place a "f***ing shitshow" after an extremely disappointing season that started with high expectations. I suspect/hope the answer is "all of them".

 

The place could be a "f***ing shitshow" for several reasons. Like the players and the clubhouse is full of frustration and anger due to their s***** play. Vets could be losing their s*** because their careers are withering away. It could be because players are angry and fighting amongst themselves. I also fully expect it could be players questioning the org and some of the processes in place. That would be super normal after a frustrating, down season. I hope the players are pissed off. I'm not surprised in the least to hear a player may have spouting off with some of those frustrations to a no-name reporter.

 

Whomever this Rosie person is provides almost zero context. We all know that one off comments when people are heated or pissed off typically don't mean a lot. Sounds like she has a reputation of trolling like this. Shapiro did the right thing to not give her the time of day.
