max silver Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2024 Posted March 22, 2024 He will again this year as well. Don’t let a small sample size fool you. He’s gotta focus on being a dead pull hitter with 20-25 Homeruns and great Defense. Basically left-handed Jansen. So in essence you are saying that players can't improve. Based on that reasoning players should stop bothering with swing and approach changes since it's such a black and white situation where their performance is preordained.

No that’s not what I’m saying at all. Just to get back to focusing on his strengths and not f***ing with his swing like they did last year. Last thing we need is him trying to strike out less resulting in less power. He should be looking to ambush inside fastballs aggressively like he did for the Dbacks because that guy looked like a 30-35 homerun player.

Would be ecstatic if thats what Varsho gives us. Jansen without the injuries is a borderline top 5 catcher in MLB

I don't necessarily think the club did anything to mess him up as it appears as though his swing was a bit of a mess due to the incompatible angles that he created throughout his motion. I find it impossible to not be really encouraged by what Varsho has done in the spring as he's almost completely stopped chasing pitches out of the strike zone and has been swinging at appropriate pitches that he can connect with. I'm a little dubious on his chosen goals at the plate as it very well may lead to an excessive amount of ground balls but at the very least he stands to strike out less this season and work his way onto base far more often if the plate discipline improvements hold to any degree. It's kind of hard to fathom but he's actually stated he wants to put the ball on the ground more this season. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/sunday-notes-daulton-varsho-goes-pull-side-thinks-low-and-hard/ It actually appears as though his swing has been overhauled with this goal in mind. He's been connecting for a lot of line drives which should help improve his overall numbers in conjunction with the plate discipline improvements but I do have a bit of fear that his overall power output will be sapped to a large degree. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/daulton-varsho-is-cleaning-up-his-process/

And then you have vlad, who consciously has to try and hit flyballs or else he grounds everything. Its all a mental thing I think, mind/body connection and all that.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2024 Posted March 22, 2024 for information purposes only, let's see how's this looks into April Of course. The data is just data. But, it's this kind of data that usually indicates a change in process has taken place. Whether that = better results is unknown
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2024 Posted March 22, 2024 Of course. The data is just data. Not sure what it means yet nor what the in season results will be. Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2024 Posted March 22, 2024 Every year..the last week of spring training takes a month lol... it seriously does. It feels like the Dodger series was a week ago...
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 That's really exciting Berrios, Bassitt, Kikuchi (and Francis?) for sure Manoah out obviously Rodriguez seems unlikely to start the season in the major league rotation If Gausman starts the season late it seems like Tiedemann gets a shot yes?

Could be, though it might be Richards with spot start with Ricky piggybacking, or vice versa. Ricky will have very clear innings limits this year and I doubt they want to blow a chunk of them all early on. For sure they’d want him available down the stretch in some capacity
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 lol @ Rob Longely... although this is cool...
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 lol @ Rob Longely... although this is cool... I suspect the hitter there isn’t exactly digging in and feeling comfortable
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 I suspect the hitter there isn’t exactly digging in and feeling comfortable I'd be cool... good hittin'
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 Lol I’m sure the guy in the box is feeling just fine
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 It is not out of the question that Tiedeman makes the team out of ST There might be a universe out there that exists where he does, but I don't think it's this one. A month ago.....
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 A month ago..... ROB LONGLEY...
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 I suspect the hitter there isn’t exactly digging in and feeling comfortable Hitter should be coming out in goalie equipment lol

If Gausman were out for a significant period of time then I could see Tiedemann perhaps being in the mix. But if Gausman only misses a start or two then I think you'd see Wes Parsons or Mitch White get a shot. Tiedemann is better but he's not on the 40-man yet and those two are so it'd be easier to just go with one of them in the short term.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 A month ago..... And my full quote, rather than the cherry picked sentences "There might be a universe out there that exists where he does, but I don't think it's this one. Early ST setback (not serious) plus a very obvious innings cap from last year to this one...it's doubtful. Unless the Jays want to specifically use him as a 3 inning opener rather than carry a true 5th starter. I'm guessing that's not what they are planning and they'd rather have tiedemann getting the bulk of his innings towards the end of the season if he's up with the club Injury caveats to other pitchers nothwithstanding of course" If you're gonna try and dunk on me, you need more than one sentence taken out of context.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 There might be a universe out there that exists where he does, but I don't think it's this one So what was the point of the above in response to my post then?
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 So what was the point of the above in response to my post then? I don’t think there was one
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 (edited) So what was the point of the above in response to my post then? What was the point of yours Jim? I'm curious to know why you'd bring up something from a month ago but only use a fraction of the post rather than the whole thing. I mean it's almost like you wanted to show how you predicted that Tiedemann could be in the rotation, I disagreed in general but then qualified my opinion to include scenarios where it could most definitely happen, but...then yesterday you brought up your statement, but only the small part of mine where I disagreed in general like it was proof that you had some magical insight and I was somehow dismissive of it ...and now your bringing it back up to show " you smart, me dumb" But that couldnt be it right? My post was in response to someone saying Tiedemann would not break camp with the Jays. All I posted was that it was possible. And yes, you making a snide dismissive comment about my post that has since been shown to be correct is what I am pointing out. Be better.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 Guys, Jim is right about once every five years. That's why he defends the time he's right so hard because he wants to make sure everyone sees it. Just let him have this one. I mean, a team's top prospect potentially making the MLB roster out of the spring. No one ever sees that one coming, this was a special prediction. Next Jim will tell us the exact location of hypothesized planet nine. Jim will be elevated to Le Verrier status.
