The Jays collectively were a lot worse offensively at home. Team wRC+ of 103 at home (17th in MLB) and 111 on the road (5th in MLB). Kinda curious now how the 2023 team would have done without the stadium renovations, but Chapman specifically (along with Springer) were pulling the ball a lot less than they did the previous year, so that likely contributed to their drop in power/production.

As far as IKF, if the Jays can squeeze a 2+ WAR out of him without having give him like 650 PA to get it, then that would be a decent outcome. I don't share the same optimism that others seem to with him, but would love to be wrong about that.

Is Hurl KingSarcasm?

Why would Chapman sign a prove me deal here? He wasn't very good in the RC and he has competition for PT

Starting to think Hurl might actually be KingSarcasm, or his source, or they have the same source

I just want an elite defender with a wRC+ near 85-90, that would do it.

Except Candelario projects to be a 101 wRC+ bat. The Reds didn't exactly pay a premium for offense.

Again, you’re just taking the data that’s available to everyone and assuming these are what teams work off of. They’re paying him based on what their internal evaluations are and not what Steamer says.

Sorrow's guy went to San Fran, lol... I said it's likely the same source.

How do you manage to type with Atkins' dick in your mouth all the time?

I just ask your mom to fill in while I type. Never seen anyone gobble up a shaft like that before. Mighty find cock sucking genes you have in the family.

30 points is a bit. It looks like his power is about the same home/away but his average is lower at home. So his explanation sounds plausible.

And yet, it needed to be explained. I’m personally not a fan of the guy and wouldn’t pay him to be a 117 wRC+ bat but who knows.

That's a copout

You could say that about literally every signing that is ever made. "the team probably projects him better than Fangraphs"

I agree. Same for Teo and LGJ. Those teams clearly think they are better players than what the public projections show.

You also have to factor in he was red hot in April and the Jays played a s*** load of games on the road that month.

Yep that’s a good point. The home sample is actually smaller than the road sample too.

Biggio had more time at SS last season than LF, just stop Sherm lmao

Also regarding Whit, he was viewed by the team as only having LF utility despite playing a lot of RF previously. There were some lineups while Whit was here where it looked like they were outright avoiding using him in RF. During his entire time as a Blue Jay, Whit only had 30 total PAs there despite that being his 2nd most common field position as a Royal. During his entire time in KC Whit only started 24 games in LF, and as a Blue Jay started 69 games in LF.

Basically what I'm getting at is, Jays seem to be keeping RF guys away from LF and LF guys away from RF.

This is getting silly Dean. The whole thing could have been avoided if you hadn't jumped down my throat over the egregious mistake of listing Cavan Biggio as an occasional option in LF next to other notable LFers like Davis Schneider.

In my defense I wasn't aware that Biggio is on record admitting that he can't play LF since he can't read the ball there. I'd argue that he can't read the ball in RF either though so what do I know.

But even so, Ross needs to implement a full blown "double corner OF utility program" asap. Right fielders have been playing LF since the 1800s so I think it's time he gets with the program. I promise you that RFers can do it Dean, even if Cavan Biggio mysteriously can't.

Though I suspect with Whit Merrifield gone (he's better in LF than RF now bc he got old and his arm sucks) he might have more opportunity to give LF another try.

We've wasted enough time on this so I think at this point we will simply have to wait with bated breath to see if Cavan "Mr. Jack of No Trades" Biggio can add subpar LF defense to his repertoire. I'd say that it will be interesting to see what will happen but I can't because it won't be interesting at all.

Cheers Dean.

I wouldn't debate that at all: but if he thinks he was hitting better because he was away then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. He might have thought he was hitting better on the road.

You didn't need to explain it bud. This wasn't the Phillies paying Schwarber $20M a year for his offense. The Reds must have higher internal projections for Candelario (or they're really stupid) - but he's obviously not some proven offensive star. Same can be said for Gurriel, who's been just a hair over league average with the bat for 3 years now. I'd be curious to know how many other teams were even in on Candelario or Gurriel anywhere near the 3 years / $45M range. While I do generally agree that teams pay more for offense. Defense does seems to be somewhat undervalued. Maybe there are good reasons for this, maybe teams just don't trust defensive stats/projections.

That said, teams aren't exactly lining up for pure Schwarber type offense. JDM is still unsigned, Garver only got $24M for 2 years, Teo only gets a 1 year deal, etc. I think teams are a lot less willing to give out long/large deals to pure offense, no defense guys. Doubtful that guys like Nick Castellanos get 5 years $100M anymore.

From May 1-onwards:

Home: 81 wRC+, 222 PA, .156 ISO

Road: 87 wRC+, 245 PA, .136 ISO

Yeah, not sure if Chappy has the right mindset if he's blaming the RC for his bad numbers. Maybe it's injury, maybe it's decline, maybe it's a little of both. A bounce back wouldn't shock me if it was health related. Doesn't appear that the park was the reason behind it though.

I've already mentioned Oracle Park this morning, makes no sense, well, other than it being his hometown. Oh well...:P

Where are you getting that San Fran is Chapman’s hometown?

Yeah I've been repeating that he's from the Bay Area but he's actually from SoCal it looks like. Not sure where he resides exactly these days but I do know that it's in the state of CA. So San Fran isn't exactly his hometown but it is his home state and he has lived in the Bay Area before after playing for the A's. Close enough.

I'm pretty sure Vlady changed his swing from new school get behind and under the ball create lift to old school get on top to create back spin - Mattingly (although he did have a bit of an uppercut, maybe he also changed). Will have to see how Vlady does ....it works for Soto

Yes he definitely changed his swing. Hes got a two handed follow through now and keeps his back elbow tucked in during his swing, ala Mookie Betts. Some of the videos where hes taking batting practice have a almost identical finish as some swings as Mookie. Not a bad hitter to try and imitate if that was the goal

I am definitely in agreement with you on the bolded Sherm

To be clear I am not denying the existence of LF/RF types, I'm just saying the Jays haven't been doing it with a lot of their guys that can play in the OF. There's more examples I could use in the organization other than Biggio and Whit, I just didn't want to make my earlier post longer than it already was.

Yes for sure - unlike many of the home grown Dodger talent who are mostly new school lift/upper cut/get the ball in the air; obvioiuls they wouldn't mess with Mookie or Freeman for that matter

MLB Network, I guess they mean it's close to home.

Home state, but he's from SoCal (Anaheim area) so quite a few hours south of San Fran

6.5 hours, i do that every few weeks from Saskatoon to Lethbridge for conjugal visits while I'm in Uni and the wife is at home. When you have the ever impressive landscapes of southern sask and alberta to look at while driving though, it seems like 10
