Espinal is like the world's easiest non tender. Its a slam dunk but they will pay him for some reason.

It would be idiotic to non tender him

He may in fact suck now but he's only had one bad year and 2.5 mil is nothing. At a minimum someone would trade a lottery ticket prospect for him.

Pretty sure they could package him in a trade rather than non-tender. He has some value

I do not want to see him get 300+ at-bats next season and I’m terrified he will.

They should do that then because IKF, Espinal, and Biggio all on the same roster sounds awful. I have absolutely no confidence we’re gonna get reliable production out of 2B and 3B. And LF and DH also remain a question mark.

If Espinal is non tendered that likely means IKF gets more at bats in his place. Is that really what you want?

He would purely be a backup on the present roster.

2B: Schneider

3B: IKF

SS: Bo

BN - Biggio is the platoon partner at 3B or 2B if the matchup is favourable

Espinal still fits on the roster but has no direct path to playing time as he does not profile better than any of the above, in any matchup situation.

Otto Lopez is probably a DFA unfortunately. He blew it in AAA last year.

I think Ernie Clement (out of options) is on the bench over Otto Lopez.

Everyone else has options.

IF they bring in a 3B, then they can trade Espinal because that slides IKF into a utility role where he can be the backup SS. But at the moment, Espinal is literally the backup SS because IKF is starting at 3B most days. So, can't trade him yet.

I mean he also might be decent. 2 WAR in 2021 and 2022.

I would say Espinal vs LHP is better than IKF.

Maybe with the stick but not when you consider defense

We basically had IKF playing 3rd for the Jays last year during May, June, August and September. This is just a MUCH cheaper, lower risk status quo move!

Wonder if Chapman will get a multi-year deal or sign a 1-year contract to build up value again given his struggles since April? If he's open to a 1-year, would reconsider re-signing him for sure. He probably lost out on a big $180-200M deal he was primed to get.

I would do 1x25 or 5/90

haha, pretty much

can't imagine IKF being more frustrating than the May, June, Aug, Sept versions of Matt Chapman. They version of Chapman was something like a .200/.270/.350 hitter with a 32% K rate.

at least IKF will be slapping the ball around consistently

Really exciting times in Blue Jays land, heading into 2024 with no noticeable upgrades anywhere! Just cheaper! All hail Ross!

Dh types prob worth about 12-14m but asking for 18 and holding up signings.

Gimme any of turner/joc/jdm/hoskins.

If Orelvis is best as dh in mlb, we prob just look for one year patch or trade him

I think you’re right

1-2 WAR DH is probably worth 12-14M but they all want the QO money

I’d give it to JDM or Hoskins but Turner or Joc are like 12M guys

Ross needs to HOLD THE LINE and not give any of these greedy bastards more money than they deserve.

Could always bring Belt back for like $6M I bet.

Or Votto for.... nothing? ahha

Yup, more players than holes. Buyers market for dh.

Position can be important of course. I recall winning World Series w Winfield

And molitor. Any guesses,

Without looking , at their WAR in 92/93. I haven’t looked yet but I’m gonna guess it’s lower than it should be

nah they were f***ing studs

the modern DH plays like 115 games because they platoon a bit and get days off

back then these dudes were the best hitters on the team and they all got 750 PA ahaha

Espinal has been a plus defender at 3B, Id rather have above average defence and a 105wRC+ bat vs LHP than a elite defender with a 80wRC+ bat at 3rd. Only so much you can do defensively at 3rd base anyways.

Yeah there are too many options out there to overspend on a DH. Among those options are Horwitz who projects about as well as any of them.

Ross will wait until February and they'll start to realize that the trucks aren't being backed up and we'll get a good one on a one year deal.

The question is whether Espinal can actually provide above average offense in any split at this point of his career. He stopped hitting completely against both splits at about the halfway point of 2022, and since the start of July of 2022 he's produced a 79 wRC+ against left handed pitching. He has actually been more effective against right handed pitchers in this time to the tune of 86 wRC+ so he hasn't even been an effective platoon bat during this time.
