It is a sellers market right now.

Seattle could get a decent haul for Raleigh as catchers are at a premium for availability right now.

Their number one prospect is Harry Ford. He is close to ready and will be their primary catcher.

It adds up.

It's probably very unlikely though. Raleigh still has 4 years of control left. They want to be sure 100% that Ford is MLB ready. My guess is they keep Raleigh around and bring up Ford and run a tandem like the Jays do with Jansen and Kirk for at least a full season and then decide what to do after that. Catchers tend to get hurt too.

Seattle is apparently listening on Sewald, Teo and France.

A guy can dream and I have no idea what it take to land Sewald, but... dreaming of the back end of a pen with vintage Green, and current Sewald, Romano and Hicks makes my pants get about 2 sizes smaller. Hell, the front of our pen would be Swanson, Jimi, Richards and Mayza. That's gross.

Ty France would also be a nice get

I think he's only arb1 though so probably too pricey for a dude who is close to replacement level in 2023

I could take or leave France. Hard to fit him in the current lineup and really see where he makes much a difference without breaking something else.

I think they are waiting to see if the Mariners are in sell mode. If yes, they will no doubt try to get Cal Raleigh.

Please no. That guy is Joey Gallo vs the rest of the league but put him in Yankee Stadium against us and he'd be prime Babe Ruth.

That seems like an overpay.

Also, I am now looking to acquire Civale in all forum leagues.

I don't get why Cleveland just traded their best performing starter when they are 1/2 a game out of the division lead. Cleveland gonna Cleveland I guess.

I don’t see it

The more I think about it, since Duval will probably not get moved. With defense, cost and roster construction in mind. I think Ramon Laureano makes the most sense for a RHH.

It's hilarious how our best hitters are all right handed and yet all I keep hearing is that we need right handed bats loll. How about we get some left handed bats that aren't scrubs? Lol

You kind of have to be visionary to see it. :P

If they can pry Perez out of KC that would be a Yankee type move as well. Not sure why KC doesn’t move him. His legacy ain’t that great.

Yes. He would be like Mountcastle is for the O’s against us. :(

not much of a HITTER lately

even though his wRC+ against LHP is good this year, his K/BB rates are horrendous

While unlikely to happen unless the M's get their socks knocked off, I do think it could make some sense. The Yankees are desperate and could overpay but the M's will want to try and contend again in 2024 so it will take the right pieces.

It's a good "bold prediction."

I am considering that due to injuries and spending the start of last year and this year on the IL that he still needs to get his rhythm.. Once he had enough ABs to replicate spring training last year, he started improving.

I think he is kinda a Marcus Semien lite cerca 2020 when he started off really, really bad and then had over a .1000 OPS the last month of the season.

But how is he going to get his rhythm in a pinch hitter / weak side platoon role?

Toronto needs a Steve Pearce type of player. Some 38 year old fridge who can just stand in LF if needed but can absolutely nuke LHP.

Since he can play solid D, you could probably put him in LF as a starter, Witt at 2b, and rotate KK and Varsho between CF, PR, late inning sub on D etc... Meanwhile pull the eject handle on Biggio and Espinal.

lmao you are completely done with Varsho eh? you used to stan Daulton

they aren't going to trade for someone like Ramon Laureano and then make DV or KK a part-time player. No chance.

Varsho is still my boy.. However, you need to produce. I firmly believe the Blue Jays are a better team with Varsho on it. The D and base running has contributed significantly to our success. However, you need to produce at the MLB level and we need to do what we need for the TEAM to win the WS this year.

KK is a FA next year, the Varsho situation will probably work itself out and he can only go up with the bat, which I think he will.. However, this is a move that should help the team 2023.

It's just nuts though.

Not only have KK and DV been better than RL (WAR), they both project better (WAR).

You'd have to have 6 screws loose to make that deal and then start RL over them.

Weak side platoon? Sure. But RL will cost something since he has two years of control left so Oakland will want a "starting CFer" price.

So the plan is to sit Varsho (a guy coming off a 5 WAR season) and trade assets to acquire another struggling (but marginally better?) bat under the pretense that this guy is going to start hitting?

I don't get it, why not just let Varsho play and hope that his own hitting starts to normalize?

It is based on the fact that historically, once RL has gotten his rhythm going, (not on IL or just coming off a long IL) that he is an upgraded bat who can also play D. I think the 2019 RL is still in there.

I don't want to sacrifice run prevention just for a bat. We could have kept the guys from last year if we wanted to do that. We also saw what bad OF D led to in the playoffs.

Hence I want Duval, first choice, just don't see it. Happy with Teo's bat, but his D will kill us if we need to put him in the OF.

It's so when there is a lefty on the mound we have options other than Espinal or Kirk assuming Jansen is in the game.

If the price on hitters is too high then let's just call up Schneider (short side platoon bat) and Ernie Clement (could be a good pinch hitter if the situation calls for only a single).

But you are making an assumption (Laureano will hit again) and not taking into account the acquisition cost of bringing in Varsho (plus the acquisition cost of adding Laureano) to bring in a player who looks like either the same as or worse than Varsho. Take a look at the Statcast data, Laureano is just a crappier version of Varsho: same "flaws" (but worse) and same benefits (but less). The only thing he has on him is arm strength.

Again, why not just stick to your evaluation and let the guy you think is a very good player (Varsho) figure it out, as opposed to spending more assets to hope that another struggling player will figure it out? If neither guy starts hitting, you actually lose because Varsho is both a better defender AND base-runner - so the actual upside is much higher with him anyway (hence why he's put up a ~5 WAR season whereas Laureano's peak was at ~4 WAR).

Espinal is our backup SS and 3B. Cant get rid of him

Everyone hates him around here but this is exactly right.

On top of it, after starting off the year 2 for 31 he's slashing .278/.352/.391 since mid April. He was also good in '21 and '22 when he played at a 2.8 WAR per 150 games played average. So he's got a solid track record.

He's a fine bench player/short side platoon player.
