Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 Who should the Jays look to add? The lineup is riddled with underperformers and defensive studs who aren't easy to improve on. Maybe a right handed bat to mix in with Varsho, KK or Belt on any given day would be a good target. The rotation could use a starter. If Manoah shows us something prior to the ASB we probably don't need a run of the mill #5. A bullpen addition could be an easy way to add, but with Ryu and Green returning they might be our big additions there.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2023 Author Posted July 3, 2023 Rangers got Alrodis Chapman for Cole Ragans and Roni Cabrera. Seems like a pretty good deal for the Rangers.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 #3 or better SP Who, and what are you giving up to get him? Are you thinking a guy like Cease, Giolito? Jays need starter depth, 2 Pen arms (IMO) and a solid bench bat.

The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 Lance Lynn would be gross. Who would he replace in the rotation, assuming Manoah makes his way back? Ryu might be an option as well.

Atkins probably wants some controllable pieces.

Yeah, its really hard to say whos even available when it comes to bench bats and relivers that fall into "controllable" territory. Its way easier to identity the soon to be FAs as potential targets. I still like Bednar as a target with 3 years left of control after this season. Problem, is Pittsburgh might actually think they have a shot in the next 3 seasons given the dumpster fire of a division and he might not be available. Same with guys like Classe in Cleveland, or any higher end reliever on any central division team.

And among the obvious sellers, they really don't have s*** to trade away in the way of right handed bench bats. Pittsburgh could look to move Connor Joe or Rich Hill or something.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 Hard to decide what the Jays really need, with Manoah potentially working his way back, plus Ryu and Green in the hopper as well. Lots of intriguing BP arms in AA and AAA too, so it's hard to justify spending to bring in another reliever when he might end up being a piece of useless s*** (see: Hand, Brad) It'd be nice to get a power bat that might ignite the rest of the power laying dormant in this line up right now. Not sure who though, or what position you should target. Might be a year to just sit on your hands and not waste assets.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 I can’t imagine they add anything of significance. The 40 man is or will be bloated and they have shown reluctance to make marginal upgrades at the expense of losing some s***** reliever. There’s really nowhere to upgrade. They are committed to the guys here. They aren’t moving off of Varsho, Vlad or the catchers. Really weird spot to be in
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 Matt Chapman for Edward Cabrera No chance
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 A couple high end relievers would be nice, but otherwise I don't think we really need to add anything. The team is ready, we just need a few guys to snap out of their funks and go on a bit of a run. A new hitting coach might be the biggest upgrade we could make.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 They will tweak around the edges....hope Ryu and Green give them some value, and pray that our underperformers come around. Its the right approach in '23.

Its the right approach in '23. Agreed. There’s not much they can do. They are married to most of the roster through 2024 at the minimum, and the impending FA’s (Belt, KK, Merrifield, Chapman) are currently the ones who are helping to keep the team’s head above water while Vlad, Kirk, Varsho, etc, are s***ing the bed. All they can really do is try to fix the depth. Maybe find a RH bat who can mash LHP to come off the bench, add a late inning reliever or two if possible, etc. It’s not like the Jays have a system that can be ravaged by trades, as I doubt they have much value there aside from Tiedemann and Martinez, but they should hold on to the prospects that look somewhat promising. This is not the team to go all in for. Save some prospect capital for the off season when they’ll have a bunch of holes to fill.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 Jays should be selling. ASB might be a good time to fire Atkins and get Click behind the wheel. Would like to see Kiermaier, Merrifield, Belt, and Chapman all moved ahead of the trade deadline. Need to take a step back before you can make a big step forward. This isn’t a playoff team.

Its too early to say that. They are lumped in with 5 teams for the last wildcard. Its a blessing and a curse that the extra WC exists. Manoah, Ryu and Greene might all come back and contribute. Vlad might go off 2nd half. Chappy may be POTM again. Also, monkeys might fly out my butt. WTF knows? Wait and see. On paper its definitely a playoff team. If they fall back badly(unlikely), Chappy would be a valuable piece for someone. The rest are spare parts and may be tough to get much value. Mind you we gave up Frasso + for Mitch White.

The players would revolt if the team was torn down while still in the thick of the playoff hunt. This team has been built with the playoffs in mind and if the players perform up to their capabilities they can make some noise in the post season. Knee jerk reactions like firing the GM mid-season would accomplish nothing, but if the team fails to make the post season I agree Atkins should be shown the door.

If that's the thinking around here, then I think the Jays need to look at moving guys on expiring contracts if they're not adding any other pieces at the deadline. What is the point of keeping the status quo and sitting on KK, Belt, Merrifield and Chapman if the Jays wave the white flag on this season?
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 The Marlins aren’t moving Cabrera for two months of Chapman. I think Ross would get fired for turning that down.

But there are other factors at play that will drive the decision to sell or not
