Hi everyone. After just coming back from visiting Toronto, I thought I would sign up here. I attended my first ever baseball game with my eldest son (despite several trips to North America previously)this last week and whilst the game wasnÂ’t great ( it was the 3-1 defeat to the Tigers) I loved the whole experience. As a big football fan ( soccer to you lot) you certainly treat fans a lot better. The ticket prices are also very cheap, but I noticed once in the stadium the price of refreshments was in some cases extortionate. When next in Toronto i will definitely catch another game or two and I will be watching your game tonight. Let’s hope for 3/3 against the Rays.

My son and I are now Blue Jay fans, albeit from afar.

Good luck today and for the rest of the season.

Welcome! Please join in on all of the discussions and ask any questions that you may have

Cheers mate. I may have a few questions at some point, as while I sort of know the rules to Baseball, there are other things I don’t get.

For starters, why do teams play so many games? I see that after today you play at Houston three days in a row. That surely has to take something out of you with the travel.

They play 162 because baseball as a sport tends to have extreme variance game-to-game due to luck. The idea is that the luck will even out over such a large sample size.

Yea there is tons of travel and that’s why you normally see teams stay for 3-4 game series. The schedule used to be more “regional” like you’d play the eastern teams a lot more if you’re in the east, but this year they actually changed it so every team sees all 29 other teams at least once.

Another factor is that it's not an intense sport for most players. So they don't physically need a lot of days off.

The only players who need rest days after playing are starting pitchers.

So what are the expectations for the Blue Jays this coming season. Are the play offs a good shout?

That's the expectation. We made the playoffs last year with great hitting and decent pitching, but bad defense let us down at the worst time.

We got rid of a couple of very bad defensive players in Gurriel Jr and Hernandez and brought in a couple of elite fielders in Varsho and Kiermaier. We also brought in Bassitt and Swanson to help improve the pitching.

Our schedule is also a lot easier this year due to a change that the league made. If you see us winning 2 out 3 or 3 out of 4 in most series then there's a really good chance that we'll make it.

There's a lot of variance in a baseball season, but the Jays have a VERY strong team, and I would be surprised if they didn't make the playoffs (baseball's playoffs are a whole other story, once the playoffs start, any team could realistically win any game)

If the Jays don’t make the playoffs it would be a massive upset and people in the front office/coaches would likely be fired.

The expectation this year is for the Jays to at least get past the first round of playoffs.

Welcome Jack!

What sports do you follow on your side of the pond?

Football ( soccer to you lot 🙂) I support Sheffield Wednesday. I’m also a big fan of cricket and darts. Boxing as well.

Welcome aboard....we're heading to the UK for the month of May and hope to take in some Footie and hopefully rugby matches there.

What date in May are you coming across the pond? As the footy season finishes in May. My team Sheffield Wednesday weÂ’re doing brilliant and we were a show in for the league 1 title, we have ballsed up and are now looking like going into the dreaded playoffs, which if successful would mean we play at Wembley at the end of May to try to seal promotion to the championship.
