Interesting how a player passes a physical while injured lol.

This basically just means he's as injured as they expected him to be. i.e. his arm is still in its socket, no additional broken bones, repaired elbow(?) looks fine, recovery period is what they projected it to be when looking at signing him.

Technically it just means Toronto waived the condition in the contract that lets them review medicals and spike the deal if they don't like them.

It doesn't mean he passed some health benchmark.

Couldn't they also just check everything else out except for his elbow and sign off saying it all passes, except for the elbow obviously?

My mind isn’t working great. The fiance search is hitting all sorts of snags. I always want what I can’t have and don’t want what I have

I assume he'd have to go through a medical like anyone else would. If anything other than his elbow popped up as an issue Toronto would flag it. As for his elbow they know he underwent Tommy John, they likely could have flagged it too if they didn't like his rehab progress. They're happy with his elbow progress and nothign else came up so he passed.

Like you say passing a physical isn't meeting some benchmark. Passing it means the team is happy with where you are medically to offer you the deal you had agreed upon. It's why Correa failed 2 medicals for 300+ million over double digit years but passed one for shorter term

Yeah I would imagine he underwent a fairly standard medical + perhaps updated imaging on the elbow so Toronto could get an independent opinion on whether or not the surgery looked perfect.

It's about time the FO listened to my suggestions on this board. Fantastic signing. One of my favourite relivers in all of baseball.

Agreed

And now we don't have to face him all the damn time either :)

I guess we'll find out if this is a good deal later in the season. None of us have any idea what his rehab status is, so there's not much to comment on.

If he comes back healthy, there's a lot of cat and mouse on these options and the Jays come out pretty well in all of them. 3/27M, 1/6.25M or 2/21M are all good terms for the Jays if he's healthy.

But I don't think he accepts the 1 for 6.25M unless he's hurt. That would be a steal for the Jays and perhaps their preferred outcome. If he declines he gets either 2 for 21M or he's a FA, both of which are better than 1 for 6.25M IMO.

I think Green could accept it if he doesn't pitch much (or at all) in 2023, but yeah with the way the market is today for relievers, he'd probably be able to get that ($6.25m) guarantee or very close to it regardless if he were a FA (assuming he is healthy). Likely just a cushion in case he's hurt.

As others have mentioned, it's going to be interesting what the Jays do with their options. 3/27 is better than 2/21 for the team ($1.5m less on the lux tax payroll), so I can't imagine the Jays preferring the 2/21 over the 3/27. Best case scenario is Green looks like the Green of 2017-21 and they probably accept the 3/27. Atkins usually doesn't spend on relievers but getting a RP with Green's performance/upside might change that.

FTR:

Greene had his TJS June 3, 2022

damn, later than I thought

so a mid-season return is probably too aggressive.

Love this.

How nice will it be around August when we're all probably clamoring for some bullpen help at the trade deadline, to have Chad f***ing Green waiting in the wings about to return?

Potentially Ryu too!

Good addition, but strange timing. If the Jays waited until spring started to formalize the contract, then he could go straight to the 60 day DL. I think this will cost somebody a roster spot.

Maybe the official signing will be delayed

Maybe but they've done the medicals supposedly. I don't know the nuances of when somebody can go on the 60 but it would make the most sense.

I can't imagine that's allowed - if it was, all contracts would come with that agreement as it benefits the team.

IF we can somehow wait 2 weeks then he can report and go right to the 60 day. That fits the best.

Has the team announced it officially? Or are we just hearing it from that damn 'Sources' guy again?

Team has not announced it

But the source is a reliable one (Shi Davidi)

But what I'm saying is...until it's "official" it doesn't really count. They can just play the 'we're still negotiating' game if holding off and announcing it during Spring Training is more beneficial to the club.

Multiple real reporters have confirmed it

Whatever happened to that dude who said we signed Cody Bellinger.

I think they hold off until they can put him on the 60 day.

That's my point - why wouldn't every signing happen like this then? This 'game' just doesn't happen. There's the chance he gets cold feet and backs out (bad for the team), or breaks his leg the next day and the team backs out (bad for the player). Jays won't freak out over losing Thomas Hatch or some s***** pitcher off the 40. There will be lots of 40 man casualties very soon and once Green is put on the DL, we'll grab someone who was dropped, but has a glimmer of hope to help us.
