jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 I'm expecting one more arm, a LHR or a depth starter or both. This team is a few wins better no doubt. Yeah I really think an arm like Danny Duffy would compliment this pitching staff very well. Can be used as a starter or a LHR who can pitch multiple innings. Not too crazy about the rest of the LHR's on the market. Matt Moore would be alright, but would prefer Duffy if given an option since he could be used both as a starter/reliever. Like Laika said, will be tough finding depth starters with MLB experience who you can stash in Buffalo unless they have options. Even FAs you send ST invites to, they likely get released if they don't make the 26-man roster and won't accept a demotion to Buffalo. Even if this team loses a big bat for 3-4 weeks or one of their starters miss 3-4 turns in the rotation, I feel confident now that the Jays can hold down the fort in the short term. Obviously any long term injury to someone significant hurts, especially when the Postseason rolls around.

I was somewhat surprised at how many pitchers are still without a home. Some bargains to be found among the group for sure https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/free-agents/pitching/available/

I totally get that. When I first started trying to be a GM (reading the minor league pages and suggesting trades and so on), not one current 40 man roster Blue Jay was even born.

Some bargains to be found among the group for sure https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/free-agents/pitching/available/ Still some decent arms left. Not sure some would sign MiLB contracts as we get closer to ST, though even some arms could be had on MiLB deals, they likely will have opt-outs if they don't make the team out of ST. Brownie mentioned Chad Green. Even a reliever like Jimmy Nelson would be interesting. He looked elite with the Dodgers in 2021 before he went on the IL.

I remember David Price pitching out of the Rays pen in 2008 as the next pitching phenom. Crazy!
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Didn't Price retire? I thought I read that somewhere...
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 great depth pickup. Feel bad for him because he pretty much has to be Degrom in spring to move past White on the depth chart. Although Kikuchi has options so I suppose it could happen, but just can't see it. Who's next off the 40 man next if they make anymore moves? Danner? They might not make another signing until Ryu can be put on the the 60 day. Guys without options who aren't a lock in a role: Mitch White Trevor Richards Everyone else I can think of has options, and a little upside.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 If by some chance Thompson bumps Kikuchi from the 5th starter spot, I would expect Kikuchi to move to the bullpen considering how good he looked there last season couple with the fact that the jays only have one MLB lefty reliever.

polar bear Verified Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Zulu would be an awesome weapon out of the pen later on I think. Forgot about Francis. Overall, love the Jays SP depth right now. Even with Berrios?

WryNGinger Verified Member Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Seriously stoked for Spring training now. If 2 of Berrios, Kikuchi, White or Thompson have bounce-back seasons this rotation is going to be amazing. I would love to see how some of the media/insiders in NY, Tampa, Baltimore and Boston think of what the Jays have done this season.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 Even with Berrios? Berrios is a good pitcher with a track record of success. Even in a season that went horribly wrong for him, he still wasn’t that bad when you break down the numbers. I don’t think anyone would be surprised to see him turn in another 3-4 War season this year.

I don’t think anyone would be surprised to see him turn in another 3-4 War season this year. That's just the thing. Even though the overall season numbers are really bad it's entirely due to the high number of meltdown style starts Berrios suffered from. Something like 1/3 of his starts were very good, another third or so were decent/solid, and the other third were downright horrible. Reducing the disasters would largely allow him to return to his typical career numbers.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 Even with Berrios? Why do so many people ignore the entire body of work and just look at the most recent stats? Berrios has had several very solid seasons. Last year he was bad.... Does that automatically mean he can't bounce back and get in line with what he's done for the majority of his career?

Well he’s got to prove it first. He was an absolute disaster and got his s*** kicked in a lot last year. It’s hard to be confident about a bounce back. Hopefully it happens though.

A lot of casual fans will look at what a player/pitcher has done recently and just go by that. Berrios might even outpitch Manoah in 2023 if he returns to his previous form. Wouldn't surprise me.

It’s hard to be confident about a bounce back. Hopefully it happens though. If he got his s*** kicked in for like two seasons in a row, then I would be less confident. He's still young, proven and willing to give him a mulligan on his 2022 season.
