Laika Community Moderator Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 [bowden] Toronto continues to pursue free agents Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman with Chapman the more likely acquisition of the two. Would really prefer Bellinger if we had to overpay one of the two. Being left handed, younger with more potential and ability to play multiple positions seems like the much better choice. But will cost maybe twice as much
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 But will cost maybe twice as much Not sure about that. I'm pulling this out of my ass but it seems like 6/150 for Chapman vs 8/200 for Bellinger are what they're hoping for. Now whether any of them get that is what's causing the delay of them signing. Bellinger gets more term/risk due to his age but I don't think there's going to be more than a 5M difference annually.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 Just from reading the reactions you would assume they were a bottom 10 team. This wasn't the A's out there. I believe the Jays were somewhere right in around 10th in wRC+ 12 in runs scored and 14th in HR's. While repeating those numbers would certainly not be the goal it's also easiest to see what changed most for the Jays....The Rogers Centre They were 5th in wRC+ on the road. 7th in runs scored. 10th in HR's. Generally a team's road numbers are a truer showing of their true selves specifically you can look at 2 players, Vladdy and Varsho who were themselves on the road and just awful in the RC. If my memory serves me correctly VGJ was 130 wRC+ on the road with 15 HRs. Varsho was over 100 wRC+ and something like 60 in the RC. My biggest criticism of this FO has been the abandoning of the Mental Skills team and programs after Mugford left. Looks like the Jays are bringing John Lannon with the team this year instead of leaving him in Florida. If this is a mental issue at the RC. It's fixable. If it is something environmental in the RC, it's fixable. If it doesn't get fixed this year that's on the F.O. and out they go. Yeah, I've mentioned and said the same in a nutshell, but as is, we're worst off right now, add some ISO and I'm fine with it.

He'd be lucky to get $100m Bellinger, maybe he does get $150m

I think his contract will be close to Springer’s though. 150 for Bellinger is still risky but I’d probably do it considering the team’s current/future outlook.

I have a really hard time envisioning anyone handing out a Springer contract to Chapman given the boom/bust offensive profile. Although Boras seems to have a way to convince dumb owners to hand out mega deals while completely sidestepping their front offices so who knows.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 Chapman’s market is beginning to dry up. Scotty may have overshot his hand Who were the players heading into the offseason? Arizona - traded for Suarez San Francisco - took on Ray’s contract, signed the Asian dude for too much money Yankees - Soto, need starting pitching now. Still possible Cubs - almost certainly prefer Bellinger but could use Chapman Jays - have already signed the cornerstone IKF Seattle - LOL Detroit?

And it would suck.

deanmike Verified Member Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 Based on what I've read about Chapman's connections to multiple current members of the Giants organization, plus KingSarcasm already said Jays won't be bringing Chapman back and he hasn't missed yet, I would be shocked if Chapman doesn't sign with San Francisco.
MikeM3 Verified Member Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 Looks like we hired some guy named Ricky Meinhold to be our pitching coordinator which I guess is a move in the right direction. But he doesn't seem like a stuffist from what I've watched of his interviews so that's concerning.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 Man, Teo would've been a nice pillow deal candidate. F U Dodgers!

Sorrow Verified Member Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 On my end I’m hearing nothing. I’ve had two separate posters message me asking if I heard anything over the weekend as they had heard potentially a signing soonish. My source is presently travelling and if my understanding is correct they’re interviewing for a promotion with another org.

Sorrow Verified Member Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 No and I didn’t bother asking. I wouldn’t be surprised if we had an offer out on Teo and he ended up a Dodger.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 Per MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays have emerged as potential landing spots for the free agent slugger, citing that both teams are interested in adding “power bats,” with the six-time All-Star and three-time Silver Slugger fitting the bill. P.S. yes I know it's Morosi but I'm desperate for Jays news leading to an impact signing.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 Would love to add J Mart Hes literally the perfect candidate given it'd most likely only be a 1 year deal. Still holding out hope Bellingers market totally craters and we get him and J.D. RF Springer SS Bo LF Bellinger 1B Vlad DH Martinez C Kirk/Jansen 2B Biggio/Schneider 3B IKF CF KK/Varsho Getting 2 impact bats are still definitely needed on this team to consider them better than last year.
