Laika Community Moderator Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Trading Kikuchi and signing multiple SP6 types sounds good on paper but I dunno dudes. There is SOME value is not messing with things. Kikuchi just got comfortable after a very s***** first year in Toronto. Other teams probably see him as a flaky add and would be worried about him switching teams. He's set to produce actual surplus value on his reasonable $10M 2024 guarantee. There is also some major wishcasting from MikeM going on. You want Toronto to operate like SFG, but they probably don't have the front office chops of SFG. Playing with fire. If Toronto brought in a bunch of these SP6 type guys you'd probably end up with a bunch of Mitchy White clones.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 He won't get guaranteed. I'd definitely take him as a long man who can start though. Personally, I'd live with a 5th slot that's Francis opener + Junis or some turns you could do another RP + Wood or some other 6th SP type. You get milb depth for Kikuchi and you have 13M or whatever to play with. Kikuchi's not going in the playoffs anyways and he's probably not re-signing. Trading Kikuchi to then sign Junis isn't adding starting pitching depth unless you were able to trade Kikucci for a SPer in AA/AAA who could also be part of your SPing depth - that would be ideal I guess. Not sure what you'd actually get for him. Affordable starter coming off a really good year? Maybe that would work. Weakening the #4/#5 spot "may" give you the ability to attract a couple of those fringe guys like Junis and Velasquez (which adds just 1 more piece of depth), but then you need to open up space in the bullpen for the other guy as he won't go to AAA. Not sure you're actually going to save any money though. Most of Kikucci's 2024 salary is probably needed to sign Junis/Velasquez. I think you'd have to be REALLY confident that Manoah was going to rebound and at least give you 160 IP, 4.00 ERA season to go for this approach. These types of scenarios may looks great on paper, but when you factor in that you have to compete against all the other teams for the FA's and such, it's really difficult to pull it all off unfortunately. You can't just hand pick a bunch of individual signings and say "the Jays should have done this".
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 I actually think Green on a 2 year, 21 million dollar deal is under market. Robert Suarez got 5 years and 46 mil last year. Montero got 3 years, 33 million. Heck, Pierce Johnson just got 2 years and over 14 mil. He'll be entering his age 33 season and has an ERA over 4 for his career. Oh come on surely you must know that only closers should get paid actual money. From years of watching the Blue Jays play we all know that the best way to start the season is with a cheap bullpen because that's always worked splendidly.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Just sign Ryu back on the cheap, Gausman/Berrios/Bassitt/Kikuchi/Ryu with Manoah/Tiedemann/Francis and White as depth. Easy Peasy.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Gimme Ohtani on a mega deal and Yamamoto I don't ask for much.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Gimme Ohtani on a mega deal and Yamamoto I don't ask for much. Bob Nightengale says we are hot on the Ohtani trail.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Chapman gets the QO, Mitch White added to the 40 man, and the Jays acquire Brendon Little from the Cubs for cash.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Bob Nightengale says we are hot on the Ohtani trail. Imagine paying 500 Million for a DH?
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Bob Nightengale says we are hot on the Ohtani trail. Well known they need to attach their name to every big FA or trade target. They make a call checking in like very other team, then leak it.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Imagine paying 500 Million for a DH? Would have rather just went after Judge who can play the OF too lol

Also benefits us to have our name mentioned because if we don't get him then the other team has to pay more, leaving less money for other players.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 I could see us signing Hoskins to a 1 year deal to play DH/1B. Didn’t get a QO, and might want a 1 year deal to increase his value and test the market again next year.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Chapman gets the QO, Mitch White added to the 40 man, and the Jays acquire Brendon Little from the Cubs for cash. I would guess Little will be DFA and tried to get through waivers before too much longer. Kind of a typical minors relief arm, probably has nasty stuff with little ability to command it.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Chapman gets the QO, Mitch White added to the 40 man, and the Jays acquire Brendon Little from the Cubs for cash. The 9 lives of Mitch White

I’m guessing 10/400 is the baseline. If I’m in the industry, I’m not buying Toronto is going to make me beat my offer. He’s going to lose some level of marketability even going there.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Would have rather just went after Judge who can play the OF too lol Ohtani out WAR'ed Judge with his DH numbers only. I could swear I heard that Ohtani could also pitch too and wasn't only a DH most of the time...
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Chapman gets the QO, Mitch White added to the 40 man, and the Jays acquire Brendon Little from the Cubs for cash. Bold prediction for next year. White ends up our #5 starter and puts up an era under 4 for the year.

I could swear I heard that Ohtani could also pitch too and wasn't only a DH most of the time... Well obviously is the overall better player but I'm also considering Ohtani is going to get paid 10/550. Hard to commit that much to 1 guy. I'd rather hedge on 2 guys instead but that's just me.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Imagine paying 500 Million for a DH? If the Jays sign Ohtani, I'm buying a bottle of Hibiki 21 Yo Whisky for $1500 to celebrate!
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Imagine the rotation in 2025 if they signed Yamamoto and Ohtani this off season. Ohtani Gausman Yamamoto Berrios Bassitt / Tiedemann

If Ohtani ends up not being able to pitch long term his eventual contract isn't going to look nearly as good, but he'd likely still be a plus outfielder based on the physical tools he offers in elite speed and cannon arm.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Would have rather just went after Judge who can play the OF too lol If you ever gave up on him pitching, you'd immediately insert him into RF and watch him become a GG stud out there putz.

Dude's a beast bat and top of the rotation arm in one man, lmao. Complain...complain... complain... there's no satisfying you.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 If the Jays sign Ohtani, I'm buying a bottle of Hibiki 21 Yo Whisky for $1500 to celebrate! And I'll be polishing it off with you! lol

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 If the Jays managed to sign Ohtani, would you make a trade for Soto as well? I mean why the F not! Imagine a lineup with both those guys!
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Soler didn’t get qualified seems like a pretty obvious target to add power to the Lineup. Would be hesitant to go anymore than 3 years for him. The team that does probably gets him.
