Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 Goose, Bassitt, and Berrios are all top 20 in IP this year Isolated decisions aside I don't really think these guys are being babied or yanked too early on a regular basis... They are top 20 because they are competent and consistent performers. Not because the Jays have been pulling them at the right time. 10-15 innings extra for each of them this year likely results in the Jays being a few games ahead of where they are now. If they are competent and consistent through 6 innings, they should be given a chance to be competent and consistent through 7.

Because it sounds like you want them to be throwing 125+ each game.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 Man, I dunno. I think this just comes from wanting to complain about something. It's hard to think of any/many games where Bassitt or Berrios may have been pulled too early. Most of the time they are nearing or over 100 pitches and they are not the type of guys you want to chance it with.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 Some interestin stats on Innings Pitched / Games Started Jays are tied with the Nats with the lowest IP/GS at 5.2 overall in the league Gausman #11 6.1 Berrios #17 5.9 Bassitt #30 5.8

And Kikuchi, sort of.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 yeah but that's just Manoah nuking that. And Kikuchi, sort of. True, still relevant just not totally on Schneider having a quick hook
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 yeah but that's just Manoah nuking that. And Kikuchi, sort of. It's definitely because of Manoah, Kikuchi, and Manoah's replacement conglomerate. The top 3 are all innings eating workhorses. The only one who routinely gets pulled "too early" is probably Kikuchi and he's always one hitter away from a complete meltdown so it's pretty justified.
keggy Verified Member Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 All of the flaws of this team feed into each other. The bullpen is short one elite setup guy. Obsessing over third time through the order fries the setup guys that we do have. And the biggest problem is the offense not scoring enough runs to give the leverage guys a break. Our individual hitters are decent but we don't have a lot of power. We need to score playing small ball but we constantly run into outs and GIDPs. Our hitters can't even execute basic things like advancing runners from 2nd. Our top priority should be acquiring a legitimate lefty masher and praying the rest of the offense wakes up.

hanton Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 Also the handful of Richards starts Every team uses spot starters at one point or another

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 Everyone hates Espinal right now which is expected after last night's brain fart cost us the game. But I've seen a lot of calls to option or even DFA him. But did you know that after starting off the season 2 for 31 he's been slashing .278/.355/.370 since April 17th? That's not terrible for a guy who can play 2B, 3B and SS.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 Going to be tough to pull Kooch from the rotation in favour of Ryu or Manoah
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 Going to be tough to pull Kooch from the rotation in favour of Ryu or Manoah I feel they'll go with a 6 man rotation, after tomorrows off day they play 17 straight.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2023 Posted July 27, 2023 If Ryu comes back and is full value 2020 Ryu and Manoah is just meh, does Manoah stay in the rotation? If Ryu comes back and shits the bed, while Manoah concurrently shits the bed, what's the plan? Does Atkins pull the trigger on a #4/5 at the deadline? What other choice would he have? Best case scenario, both Manoah and Ryu pitch well and we run with a six man rotation.

Manoah spends the rest of the year in Buffalo if he suxx They trade for a starter if they both suck , though they don't have many starts to decide If they're both good you run 6 guys for now but not sure either makes the WC roster (unless one is somehow better than Gausman Berrios Bassitt or one of those guys gets hurt)

WryNGinger Verified Member Posted July 27, 2023 Posted July 27, 2023 4th highest pitch count in his career for Kikuchi tonight. Solidly into the #4 spot in the rotation for now. Good for him.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2023 Posted July 27, 2023 Manoah and Ryu can fight it out for the final spot in the rotation, tbh how much can we really expect from Ryu anyway
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2023 Posted July 27, 2023 Kikuchi saving the season lol... shaddup!!!
