ROS Bass is the better pitcher easily. He had a rough April but appeared to be turning a corner. 2.38 FIP in May. Meanwhile, White has been pitching like complete ass in AAA. He just doesn't look right.

But Bass is old, a FA at the end of the year, and is in the middle of a shitstorm. The team also bungled this by having him take the first pitch which put Bass and the team in a weird spot after Bass' latest comments.

White is younger and could have a future with the team if he turns things around. He also has the ability to maybe go multiple innings (idk if he can go one inning right now tbh) which could be in his favor with Bowden Francis being the new #5 SP. They also had to call up White or DFA him and I doubt the team wanted to do the latter after just acquiring him for a guy who is now making Top 100 lists. So it makes some baseball sense as Bass was toward the bottom anyway.

But as for the other stuff, I know one side of the political aisle is going to be rejoicing but I don't like the precedent this sets for the team. Disagree with Bass all you want but there's a lot of Christian MLB players in this league and the Jays don't want to become the franchise that is known as being "hostile" to Christian players and families.

The rest of MLB might not be happy with this precedent either. Kershaw, Trevor Williams and others have spoken out but there's now a team there that will cut you if you do so. MLB fans are also much more conservative than other sports leagues too. I think Atkins needs to stress that this was largely a baseball move because it kind of was. No way this team cuts him if he was even their 8th inning guy over this.

This.

With a full paycheck, he’ll be ok

Yeah honestly he wins here, another team will for sure pick him up and he’ll get to play back in the US

I think probably he’d clear waivers maybe and be a FA. Which is better. Idk

You don’t think he’ll be claimed by someone? He can refuse the DFA right

players with 3 years service time can refuse the assignment, which would be Bass.

Eh, he’s not very good and he’s got a lot of bad PR right now. I’d say it’s 50/50. He could very well end up facing a demotion although the Jays would probably just release him outright in that scenario, or as Hurl says he would refuse the assignment and become a FA, but he still may end up in the minors elsewhere.

Many teams have a roster crunch, paying Bass 1.6M for the rest of the year, isn't something worth while most teams considering he has to stay in the majors for them. It's what the Jays are hoping as his $1.6M is multiplied with them in the luxury tax.

How the hell you haven't been banned today I have no idea...

You know he's banned right. He got the longest of the bans thus far.

He definitely was not our worst reliever, so DFA'ing him was likely political/to reduce distraction.

BUT, I personally dont have an issue with a player using their platform to support their views whether we disagree with them or not. I think we all have to be mindful of whether we stand on the popular side of an issue (or not) and be okay with that.

FWIW, Im not a fan of what happened at Target with them supporting transitioning-pushing clothing to children. To me, that is unquestionably wrong and dont have an issue with that.

Curious, what RP would you release instead?

Most people who are being honest would probably not have much of a problem with Anthony Bass's position, but it doesn't matter, we all know what corporate values are these days, we know what professional teams' values are these days. There's certain things that'll get you in deep s***, what he did was one of them. We all knew it, he should have known it.

Cimber has options, he could have been sent down and DFA'd Clement. I do believe there will be another move from outside the 40 man in the next week.

But does he have enough time accrued that he’d have to consent to being sent down. I think he’s just over the threshold

Either way, I prefer Cimber for the bullpen. He provides a different look for hitters. Bass is vanilla

And Ernie C is rocking a .900 ops this year.

Cimber would have to forfeit any guaranteed money to refuse an assignment. i don't disagree with you, just offering an option to Bass

On a purely economic basis, a replacement level player isn't adding value to the team's ownership if even a modest portion of the Jays fanbase decides to not watch the games over their views. What kind of surprises me in this day and age is that agents don't manage the social media accounts of their players. A player's value can be affected greatly by public perceptions as much as reality. Without going into negative examples (Bonds, Bauer) too much, an example on the other side is Jeter who was so well liked by fans that he was vastly overpaid at the end of his career.
