DiManno column today alludes to what some of us suspected:

There’s a more serious mien on a team that is done with making whoopee and callow shenanigans in the dugout, committed to grown-up ball. By design or happenstance, the Barrio — a mostly Latino component of merrymakers and pranksters — has been broken up with Teoscar Hernández and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. shipped out of town, swapped for a more sober-minded crew.

“I think that everybody can look back at last year and realize that we probably needed a bit more professionalism and a little bit more maturity,” Bichette allows. “Not that we were immature, but that is part of the growth for us as players and young players.

“I’m not sure if that’s what they were intending with (Hernández and Gurriel); that’s not my job. Those are great players that we lost, but we replaced them with good players, too, guys who are here ready to compete and working as hard as they can, ready to do everything possible to win. So, sad as we are to see those guys go, some people that I’ve made great friendships with, I’m really excited to see what this group can accomplish.”

Somewhere, Teo is laughing about this.

This dude knows that "making whoopee" means f***ing, right? It's not just another term for "goofing around", it means f***ing, and only f***ing.

just say that you were wrong and apologize to Tyler

no need for this block of pure cope

Don't think I need to. Incredible talent, without much results to date. He must have attitude issues. I also heard he pulled a prank in the clubhouse and told a joke in the dugout last year. That's probably why the Cards didn't win the World Series last year.

Retarded is a perfectly fine word if used correctly and not as a slang dig at something. Like, if someone's learning or growth in any field has been blocked or slowed down by any reason, their learning or growth has been retarded.

If I have to tar a building roof over again, it can be retarred.

Also I learned today that getting "gypped" (i always thought it was spelled jipped...who knew?) is a derogatory slang term referring to gypsies in Romania who were looked down upon as thieves and crooks. I didn't even know being a Gypsy was a bad thing, i though it was just some people who liked moving around alot.

Now, when I feel like using gypped I have to go back to the tried and tested... I just got Jew'd. That's still okay right?

Not acceptable in the derogatory context it is used on BJMB ie. someone is mentally deficient

Elvis Luciano suffered an arm fracture, and then opted free agency in December, 2022 (IIRC). Does anyone know his status? Is he just out of baseball?

Damn.. I kind of forgot about him.

I learned this from an episode of The Norm Show

No, he signed in Japan recently.

It says he signed a "training contract" I don't know what that means but perhaps it is like a two way deal?

I feel like calling the current team the "White Jays" would be an insult to the mid-2000's teams that JP Ricciardi built.

The word fag can be used to describe a cigarette butt or a tiring task

It was used yrs before it represented a gay person. It wasn't an issue using it throughout the 60s then the 70s came and .....well, you know the rest of the story.

It has literally nothing to do with the decade, they still use the word in England for cigarettes.

Lol you guys are so DUMN.

Gurriel was a class clown, no doubt about it. But what did Teoscar ever do other than the fact that he spoke Spanish? Seemed like he was the butt of a lot of jokes because he was more serious than anything else. Dude also hit two jacks in an elimination game so not sure how he was the problem.

Dimanno doesn't even report anything new other than what we've observed. Bichette adds some color to it but the jacket got stale and was likely getting dumped one way or the other anyway.

And getting rid of two Spanish speaking players for two American players is 1) a SSS that most definitely could be "happenstance" and 2) could quite easily be explained by the fact that the new guys are better fits for the team due the fact they bat left handed and one of them is a GG defensive player. Defense and left handed bats were definitely something that needed improving.

Get the hell out of here with this "white jays" BS.

Agreed. They wanted a more balanced lineup, better defense, better base running, and more team control in the OF (Springer was the only OF locked up beyond 2023 heading into the off season). Hernandez and Gurriel each had only a year of control left, were both RHB, and both had issues with defense/base running. I feel like the roster fit for what Atkins wanted was a much bigger factor than personality. If Hernandez was a LHB with above average defense and the exact same personality, would they have traded him? Just to replace him with KK? I very much doubt it.

With that said, I do think the Jays want to get more serious, which Bichette alluded to and the elimination of the HR jacket points to as well, but the roster turnover seems way more about specific skillsets that the front office was looking for.

Pretty sure the White Jays thing was just a joke/callback to that dumbass (probably) Toronto Star reporter who tried to virtue signal the mid-2000's teams. Then you guys had to have a five page rant about it. As for who is a goofball versus who is serious. Let me explain something to you. They are all late-90's early 2000's born men with access to money. They are all goofballs. Addicted to several hours of video games a day and social media. They spend a disproportionate amount of time thinking about Joe Rogan. They've had unlimited access to porn since they hit puberty. They all probably have low sperm counts too, even as athletes. Well maybe not Kirk and Guerrero. Likely something to do with them not being exposed to U.S. estrogen-laced food as kids.

Also FWIW I loved Teoscar despite his dumb blunders. Bought his shirsey last year even. Definitely sad he got traded but I understand it likely makes the team better.

That's just it, the Jays got better defensively/baserunning and moved out 2 guys on expiring contracts, it was smart moves by Ross to add value to the team, had nothing to do with the barrio. To suggest otherwise, is loose lip service. If there was intent it wasn't much of a factor to get Varsho and upgrade the pen. This topic is silly.

I think its silly to outright say that breaking the Barrio had nothing to do with it. The truth is WE DONT KNOW. I personally think its probably a bit of column A and a bit of column B. Probably more about improving the team and contract status and such, but the other stuff was probably a factor.

Don’t forget that they fired Charlie mid-season. You can’t tell me that has nothing to do with team attitude/chemistry

No one has ever suggested that breaking up the barrio was the sole reason. Basically we all have the opinion that breaking up the barrio was or probably was a secondary consideration.

Quite sure regardless of race that this would've have been done anyways. I suspect if people want to look for certain things they can find something that will match their preconceptions.

I would hope that the firing of Chuckles had to do with him being an absolutely f***ing gawdawful garbage manager more than anything else...

He was always awful though. Should have been fired in the offseason after missing the playoffs by a game. They fired him mid-season while still competing. That’s definitely sending a message.

The thing is this team could flame out this year and no one going to be like ‘too many stone faced white dudes on this team’

Or our (mostly white) bullpen could have not self combusted against Seattle or white Springer or white Bichette could have not messed up the key play (harsh but true) and we went on to win a world series (cos the playoffs are pretty random).

This all seems like nonsense to me. But now there are way more white people around, I expect Bo to f*** up a lot less at SS.
