John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Just to kill some time between now and ST, lets put together a list of Jays who had all the hype in the world, and then injuries completely decimated them. lets try to get 5 SP plus a few others we could stick in the pen, with a full IF and OF. Credit to the ST countdown thread for inspiration I'll start, then people can add in their picks SP - Dustin McGowan - all the talent in the world, but a completely f***ed up shoulder and it was pretty much over. Best season was a solid 3.4 fWAR in 2007 with a 3.79 xFIP over 27 starts, then had a really solid 2008 rolling along until he was sidelined again in July with "shoulder soreness" than ended up being season ending surgery and then kept hurting it again ang again in recovery. Missed all of 2009, 2010 and 2012 due to injuries and attempted a comeback out of the pen from 2013-2017 with Toronto, Philly and Miami, but realistically it was all over in 2008.

You could include Al Leiter, the early years before he became a free agent and left. And Bill Caudill as our first stopper.

Brandon Morrow would be up there. He looked awesome but his arm could not stay intact

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Brandon Morrow would be up there. He looked awesome but his arm could not stay intact Still one of my favorite Blue Jay pitchers. It wasn't injuries, but Travis Snider was the one of the biggest busts I can remember. I think that just happened to be around the time I started following the Jays more closely and tracking prospects and such - so he probably sticks out more than others due to timing.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Chris Carpenter is a depressing example. Top prospect who struggled with injuries and ineffectiveness with Toronto. We released him and he goes on to win a Cy Young and make 3 All-Star teams with the Cardinals.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Going a little bit against the spirit in that he wasn’t hyped or a particularly toolsy player, but Devon Travis is a good one. Came relatively out of nowhere blowing up for 4.9 WAR over a 163 game span in 15-16 at ages 24 and 25, but he was completely made of glass. I’m pretty sure one of his injuries occurred due to the team plane having a rougher than usual landing, and he hurt his knee in the process. Can’t make this stuff up. Travis looked like a sure bet to be the 2BOTF but instead was fully out of baseball by 2018 where the injuries made him a shell of the rising star he looked like only a couple of seasons earlier.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Also not to be that guy, and there’s at least some hope we can yet squeeze some value out of him, but Nate Pearson is the obvious present day example.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Kyle Drabek came up when he was 23 yrs old, and succumbed to his 2nd TJS when he was 24.5 yrs old. Before you say he sucked, he meets the hype and injuries criteria of this exercise "lets put together a list of Jays who had all the hype in the world, and then injuries completely decimated them."
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 So other than the pitching side I don't think you're going to get a deep list of hyped up prospects who got screwed by injuries. On the hitting side you'll have to just think of plain old disappointments. Travis Snider and Sil Campusano are probably on the corners. I guess Josh Phelps is the 1B? He could also be DH or C but there are many other C options. Russ Adams the SS?
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Kyle Drabek came up when he was 23 yrs old, and succumbed to his 2nd TJS when he was 24.5 yrs old. Before you say he sucked, he meets the hype and injuries criteria of this exercise "lets put together a list of Jays who had all the hype in the world, and then injuries completely decimated them." Nah Drabek is a good one. He was the headliner of the Halladay deal after all. On that same note, Drew Hutchison. Not quite as hyped industry wise but he carved up A+ and AA (SSS) as a 20 year old, then got a cup of coffee at 21 and held his own before getting TJS in 2012 literally a week after it was announced Drabek needed his. Pretty sure Morrow also got injured around the same time in 2012, to put an end to one of the more depressing weeks in the 2010s as a Jays fan that I can remember. Our young promising rotation just decimated in a week.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 I am going to veto Chris Carpenter because he did give Toronto three solid seasons and a decent amount of innings. They also really had no choice but to not offer him a guaranteed deal towards the end. And I think his team control would have been up anyway! Yeah he blossomed later on but even if he was healthy that probably happens right? He peaked in his 30s so he would have been gone anyway.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Wow! The Sheriff just got wrecked with a veto.

I'm forgetting a bunch as well.

Only Devon Travis was a victim to injuries, the rest just sucked outright. I guess for Brett Lawrie you could say coke addiction as an illness/injury.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 I still think Brett Lawrie might have made a good running back
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Ricky Romero with the yips? Yes He's also incredibly bland as a radio guy
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Romero gave the Jays 2-3 decent seasons and innings at least before he completely lost it. Travis Snider just was a disappointment. Never lived up to the hype at all as one of the top prospects in the game. I even remember when he made a brief stint at the end of 2008, he was supposed to be the future of the Jays. Drabek due to injuries and since he was the headliner of the Halladay deal. Really the Jays got nothing to show for from the Halladay deal. Sucks we never saw a healthy Drabek.

I'm forgetting a bunch as well. Rios had some solid years for the Jays and went on to have a couple decent years with Chicago. He never became an elite superstar guy but still was solid. Even after the 2007 season, the Giants were close to trading Tim Lincecum for him. McGowan had a solid year in 2007 and 2008 before getting injuries derailed his career. Injuries were even a problem when he was coming up I believe. Morrow gave the Jays 2-3 solid seasons. Sure we never saw a fully healthy Morrow, but when he was pitching he was great. Hinske sucked after his 2002 season. Not sure he was highly touted when he came up, so maybe just had a fluke 2002 season.

Well ultimately we did end up getting something out of the trade from Devon Travis who has connection to the Halliday trade through Brett Walrus -----> Anthony Gose------>Devon Travis

Forgot Gose was traded for Travis.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 17, 2023 Posted January 17, 2023 It's crazy to think that coming off B2B 5+ WAR seasons that we just put Rios on waivers after a poor 2009 season. He as very inconsistent after that, but did post a 3.3 and a 4.0 WAR season for the White Sox. I met him at a Blue Jays spring training event. He was a massive douche and I have to think that's why the FO cut bait.
