Laika Community Moderator Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 Cavan Biggio is the utility guy maybe he can grow his hair out and join the Barrio
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 Vlad is smelling the mega deal by now. He’s working. What he weighs is kind of debatable in terms of what it’ll do.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 Is he the kind of guy who relaxes after signing said mega deal? I worry he might be Idk. His whole life has been baseball from before he could hold a bat. It’s what he knows. It’s like NBA players, you’d think they’d get their money and thug out, but they love playing basketball. It’s what they know
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 I don't think anyone is saying Vlad will quit playing baseball, what is concerning is whether or not he will stay in some semblance of shape, well some shape other than round that is. The guy has zero metabolism in his early 20's. Imagine him trying to be worth $30+ million per season wen he's waddling around at 300lbs + in his late 20's early 30's

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 Trade him? Not necessarily. Depends on his work ethic. I don't know Vladdy or what he's like or what his habits are. The Jays FO should have a pretty good idea whether or not he'll work his ass off to stay in shape or if he's likely to let himself go after getting that juicy contract. It would also depend on what kind of offers you can get if you were to shop him.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 (edited) I think given what Stripling ended up signing for, he would've taken the QO which would have been a massive overpay. The difference between the QO and the AAV he got is like 2/3s of one KK or Belt contract. As for the pen, I really think it's entering the season in a very good state. Swanson's addition really shouldn't be understated, even if you regress his 2022 (which was elite) the projections still see some strong K numbers coming from him. Fair perspective. I get the argument. On a one year deal I don’t think he was a massive overpay, juxtaposed against the term/aav we ended up signing to backfill him with Bassitt, and the expensive market. Would have been ok with it. I don't discount Swanson. Very solid. I meant in addition to him. In exchange for Teo's bat in a win season, it was necessary getting a RP back is minimum that in quality/control. Would like to see another arm of that ilk added. Edited January 13, 2023 by BigCecil

They have at least 3 prospects knocking on the door. They’ll be fine. They’ll also sign someone now that TB is off the payroll
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 Sorry of already posted Yup, that 2nd video was like the Holy grail of inspiration for the 2022/23 off season. Look at how many runs and pitch count and pitchers could have been prevented with good OF D!

Look at how many runs and pitch count and pitchers could have been prevented with good OF D! It reinforces that getting rid of Hernandez and Gurriel was the right move. That first clip where Hernandez misses the catch and then walks to the ball like he's shagging fly balls at practice.

Watching it live I was hoping that he was going to be benched for his total lack of effort. Happy he's gone.
Ray Verified Member Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 It’s actually kinda crazy how unlucky Gausman got with his BABIP last year. It was historical levels of unluckiness. Like if he just posts a league average BABIP, he’s probably giving Verlander a run for his money for Cy Young.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 Did Espinal save all his errors for when Gausman pitched? You'd think Gausman f***ed his wife or something.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 Toronto did everything they could do hide Hernandez and Gurriel in aggressive shifting patterns but they are truly godawful defenders. So happy they are gone.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 Outfield defense, along with Schneider ignoring logic/stats, also cost the Jays Game 2 of the Wild Card game. Could definitely understand why Atkins did what he did after a full season of Hernandez, Gurriel, and Tapia in the OF.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 I haven't dug into the numbers but I'm pretty sure Gausman got f***ed by the Jays offense as well as the defense. Seemed like they really struggled to score runs for the guy for some reason.

People think Manoah was our best pitcher last year when it was actually Gausman… and yet Manoah was top 3 in CY voting lol

Its so crazy that those 3 guys are all awful defenders and they were the starting OF for like half our games… compare to 2023 where now we have 3 well above average guys out there.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 Jansen gets $3.5m (projected at $3.7m).
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 Jansen gets $3.5m (projected at $3.7m). Now's the time to offer him a long term deal. 5/40M. Would buy out 3 free agent years at about 10M a pop.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 Absolutely should extend Jansen now Weird, and maybe somewhat concerning, that the Jays have not extended many (any?) existing players. Who was the last one.... can't be Grich can it?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 They gave Chapman a 2 year deal but just to avoid any stress over his last 2 arbitration years. So yeah hardly anyone has been extended beyond that
