Lets hope Manoah has a similar career. At least for his Jays tenure

Manoah has already had a season better than any of Stroman's with the Jays, and it was in his first full season in the MLB. Obviously nobody can really complain if he posts consistent 3 WAR seasons like Stro did, but at this point in time his ceiling should be considered higher than that.

I think people are taking the "Manoah will probably regress" and seeing his early 2023 results and thinking he's some mediocre pitcher. Manoah has been exceptional early in his career, not just by ERA. He still has room for growth, unless something terrible has happened, he should go back to 2021/22 levels with a chance to improve on that.

Can the Rays seriously f*** off

They just beat a s***** AAA pitcher, not like the result was ever in doubt. I don't think i've ever seen a softer schedule to open a season ever.

Through May 4th from the start of the season they will only have faced 2 teams that aren't bottom dwelling nobodies or at best a .500 team (Boston)

We'll find out more about Tampa in May when they go up against the Yankees, Orioles, Yankees, Mets, Brewers, Blue Jays and Dodgers in consecutive series.

They'll have a cushion built up of course from steamrolling the dumpster fires up till then, but their record in May will be far more accurate as to how good they really are.

I don’t think anyone looked at that trade favorably. We were all upset we didn’t get a better return.

Donaldson too but he was hurt

Sorry - to clarify, I agree that the prospects we got from the Mets were underwhelming, but when we paired that with the Ryu signing (who at the time was better than Stro and cost the same) - I think most thought it was a great decision to move Stro before he became a FA and replace him with Ryu, plus the prospects.

IIRC most posters hated the return. I remember defending it, because I am a front office apologist. Many wanted one of the Mets' infield prospects at the time (Gimenez, Mauricio, Vientos...). It was an underwhelming return especially considering that Stroman was one of the best piece available that deadline and Toronto decided to flip him to a non-contender for some backend top 10 prospects.

It didn't work out for anybody. I think Stroman ended up sitting out the Covid season so the Mets really only traded for 11 starts from him, haha. His 2021 with NYM was the result of him accepting the QO, no?

The trade ended up bad for Toronto, but the Mets didn't get much value out of Stroman anyway, and the Jays were able to spin SWR into Berrios who was okay at first but then they f***ed that up by extending him right before he turned into a pumpkin. A string of sadness.

SWR still has a chance to make it though.

Goddamn imagine if we had gotten Gimenez instead

Donaldson the front office just held onto for too long and then his injury f***ed everything up. He should have been traded in the offseason, stayed here a year too long when we had no chance compete. Lost opportunity

Late July 2019 they had Stroman and an upcoming 5th overall pick and 120 million dollars and turned those 3 things into Jose Berrios.

Scherzer guilty as s*** and Buck Showalter knows it.

Man - I really undervalue how amazing Kershaw is. I take it for granted. Shame on me.

I looked it up last yr but I think he has lost about 4 MPH off his FB from peak Kershaw but he is still getting it done with command and repertoire. Incredible. #HOF bound.

Wainwright is another one.

Just watched SEA lose by 2. Had bases loaded bottom 9 and Matt Bush shut them down.

Off to a tough start. Teo rockin' a 90 wRC+. No doubt he will get hot but he ain't right now.

100%. I saw Merryweather pitched for the Cubs today. 2 K's in an IP. Gave up a hit.

Lost in extras yesterday too. Bush and Williams had 3 Ks each

Kershaw is on a whole different level - maybe 3 more levels. Career ERA < 2.50, Career FIP of 2.76, Career xFIP of 2.97 and his performance just doesn't change....it's just the injuries that reduce the number of innings he pitches. It's remarkable how the performance hasn't dipped.

Oh c’mon lol. That hurts Olerud. Hope he lights up the Stros tonight.

A gimmick is a gimmick. If they aren't going to decide games by playing baseball then they may as well make it exciting. Also, we have Vladdy.

This is actually a very reasoned response.

Time to figure out how to steal Mason Miller from the A’s.

Remember when we all thought we made out line bandits to get SWR, Kay and Ryu for Stro? Good intent, but that was a swing and a miss.

Speaking of which...

I think the consensus on this forum was not liking both the Stroman trade and the Berrios trade, although maybe I'm misremembering. I know we looked more favorable at the Berrios deal after he pitched well here in 2021 and then got extended (so he wasn't just a 1.5 year rental) but obviously that extension looks bad now. The Stroman trade specifically was pretty bad. I think we all just prayed that SWR would make it worthwhile in the end.

Olerud's post is sad but true. They literally had a consistent 3 WAR innings eater who liked pitching in Toronto but they hated his personality so much that they spent way more money + assets to acquire a replacement SP who no team in their right mind would take over Stroman today. Just a bad chain of moves in hindsight.

Berrios still has a chance to be a very valuable pitcher if he returns to form. If hes even 80% of what he use to be he will probably be worth his contract. Stroman is looking like a steal for the Cubs at his money problem is hes an insufferable prick that annoys the f*** out of everyone. It's clear because of that he was never going to be in the long term plans. They needed more in that trade for him 100 percent. But if Berrios pitches the way he suppose to we will be fine. They punted that #5 regardless. Other teams saw Martin was going to suck in clearly our scouts didn't. Luckily they cashed out him while he still had value.
