Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2023 Posted August 8, 2023 IÂ’ve been saying, Angelos sucks. DidnÂ’t realize the son sucks too. I KNEW they wouldnÂ’t add anything significant at the deadline. People underestimate the significance of meddlesome owners like Angelos and Arte Moreno. Lets see if the Os pony up this offseason because thereÂ’s 0 reason for them to be stingy again. They both might be ass-holes but huge difference between Moreno and Angelos (the son). Moreno spends a crapload and apparently has his hands in the baseball ops Angelos (the son) is I guess an ******* to his employees but other than that apparently just wants a super-team on a 60 million dollar payroll. And in fact maybe Angelos seeing what Moreno has done with all those free agents just doesn't be like that guy, and will just tell his baseball ops they aren't spending because too much risk they just blow it. I guess long term this means Orioles may be just another Tampa Bay instead of a historic super-team with a decade(s) long run. Assumption they would be a super-team is that Angelos (like his father) starts spending when the time is right, but unlike his fathers money this time the the money is spent by really smart people.

What free agents did the Orioles sign?? Other than 1 year deals to guys like Cruz and Trumbo they didn’t sign anyone to supplement the 2014-2016 roster. They extended Hardy, Jones, Davis, and that was pretty much it. Didn’t lock up Machado. Im pretty confident the Os won’t be signing any big-name free agents. They’ll barrel scrape like they did this year and sometimes they’ll be successful, sometimes they wont. They’ll probably extend guys like Adley and Gunnar.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 8, 2023 Posted August 8, 2023 FFS this can't be true. Somebody please tell me this isn't true. If this is actually true it's one of the most pathetic things I've ever f***ing read in my life. What he said wasn't even close to out of bounds. There wasn't an ounce of controversy in it. I think this should be punishable by major league baseball itself to be honest with you. He stated facts. Those facts were supported in a Network-supplied graphic. He got suspended essentially for bringing negative attention to the Orioles performance in the division over the past few years. According to multiple people online and on MLB Network the Orioles have a ridiculous inferiority complex. 100% of people in baseball think the Orioles are absolutely pathetic for doing this.

They got rid of Jonny Miller, who was a legend because he “didn’t bleed black and orange” so anything’s possible for the Angelos family.

tossingthiscoin Verified Member Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 I hope the Padres beat the Mariners. We are 2.5 games ahead of the Mariners and if they win tonight, it's going to be 2.0 games ahead.

He deserved to be mocked. He's s***. It probably took the rest of the crew a long time to come to his defense because they know how bad he is.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 Logan Gilbert putting on a show for the Mariners , just when we thought the Mariners were out up 1 - 0 vs the Padres bullpen day
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 He just turned 29 years old and is one of the most consistent pitchers in the league. He also doesn't miss starts. His contract is very team-friendly (under $20 mill per year until 2027). It sounds like you're just talking to talk. Any player can implode at any moment in time. By that logic you should probably never extend anyone of value past their arbitration years if Jose Berrios' contract (of all players) is worrying to you. LMAO I bet you weren't saying that about Berrios last season.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 Simeon Woods-Richardson wasn't a pick by this team. As usual, you are looking for things to complain about. Jose Berrios is signed to a below-market AAV. He signed a 7-year term, but he was just 27 at the time of that extension. This means that he will be just 34 years old when he is a UFA. That isn't even old by any standard of metric; Chris Bassitt is literally 34 years old right now and he's still plugging away at a 2+ WAR pace. Berrios is one of the most durable pitchers in the league. He has zero history of control/command concerns. He is not fat, and he does not have a wild/inconsistent delivery. His success has never depended on overpowering velocity. He is about as safe as it gets from a pitching perspective, and to repeat: his below-market contract doesn't even run until his age 35 season. To state "we'll see what happens" can be said about any player in the history of the game. Again, if Jose Berrios' contract has you spooked then you may as well not extend any player ever again LMAO. Yes guy, the 29 year old who never misses a start and doesn't even make $20 mill per year might iMplOdE aT aNy mOMeNt! YoU nEvr KnOw! You're even worse than MaxSilver and Brownie19. I owe those guys an apology for calling them the biggest homers.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 Incredible talent and the best LH SP in the game. How that team deals with all their injuries is impressive. As a baseball fan, sucks to see the best in the game go down to injury. Remarkable how many arms the Rays lost this season, yet they continue to stay competitive. Will hurt them in the Postseason more than anything, but they still could throw some solid arms out at you in a short series.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 The Orioles are having one of their best seasons in recent history, there is no way they could ruin such a great story. Pete Angelos: hold my beer!
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 Imagine having had the two greatest players of a generation, two of the greatest players of all time, and watching it all amount to nothing. The more they tried the more they failed. This losing streak after being buyers at the deadline is the perfect cherry on top of their s*** sundae. One of the most disappointing organizations in the game. You had two of the best players in baseball and never even won a Postseason series. Such a huge waste. Likely will never see two players like Trout and Ohtani ever play on the same team again.

Berrios AAV is like 18M, he’s never missed a start and will probably be worth 3 WAR. With the price of starting pitching today Berrios contract looks like a bargain
AMS528 Verified Member Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 You're even worse than MaxSilver and Brownie19. I owe those guys an apology for calling them the biggest homers. Given his performance this year, let's say Berrios finishes the season out similarly and ends with about 3-3.5 WAR. 5 out of the 6 seasons prior to that he was a 3-4 WAR pitcher consistently. He has the one terrible year last year. What kind of contract do you believe Berrios would receive as a free agent? Taijuan Walker signed for 4/72, and Taillon signed for 4/68 last year. They're 30 and 31 respectively when they're signing those deals. Neither have Berrios' overall career WAR or general track record with pitching as many innings in each season. That's not me being trying to be a homer, just laying out reasonably nearby deals from the year before, and their respective WAR numbers. The year before that you've got Gausman and Ray signing 5/110 deals. Both are coming off of career years, a decent bit better than their past performance has shown, but they each have some decent seasons from earlier. Stroman also signs that year for 4/92 with a player option. He's got a pretty similar track record to Berrios. Consistent steady performer, nothing too elite but also only one poor season relative to the rest of their steady performances. Those are probably the rough markers.

I guess I'll take that as a compliment and it's nice to see I've made a lasting impact on you since you keep bringing me up in discussions I'm not involved with. You should consider developing some new material though, the constant "DUH you're a HOMER!" schtick is really stale. It shouldn't be a crime to support moves that the front office made instead of trying to be edgy or whatever assorted trolling techniques you are utilizing.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 (edited) Berrios AAV is like 18M, he’s never missed a start and will probably be worth 3 WAR. With the price of starting pitching today Berrios contract looks like a bargain True on the $19M AAV and the cost SP Free Agent market. Last year he was worth just 1 WAR mostly because he did pitch 170 innings. It wasn't a bargain. Recently, as in this season, he has been solid and worth what you project. Few would have posted ^ last season. Jose has 1200 IP already at 28. Bassit is 34 and has 900 career IP in contrast, who might end up worth 2 WAR in '23 for $21M. Berrios career FIP and ERA are over 4. Nothing too elite but pretty consistent. Its just fact that a lot of his value has come from eating lots of innings. The risk is that he has a lot of wear and tear on him already. Some would make the case that his career durability to date is a strong indicator that it will continue perpetually through 34-35. I get that argument but its not probable. The bet on his contract term/AAV is that he will continue to stay healthy and pitch 150 ish IP + season through 35. Most pitchers don't stay that durable to that age, and this FO made the bet he will. I think the last few years will be no bargain at $19M AAV. 5 of 6 of the current rotation are FA signings. Lasts years Free Agent cost/WAR was $8.5M. Looking forward to the day we have more & cheaper in house developed rotation components. Edited August 9, 2023 by BigCecil
