Given the contracts signed in this offseason I'm really surprised that Strip didn't have offers for more years, and with a higher AAV.

He had a great year but it was only 134 innings, being guarded against going through lineups more than twice. And his prior two years stank.

Yeah he doesn’t have the track record of a guy like Bassit. Hence the opt-out after year 1. If he repeats his 2022 he’s probably looking at a deal closer to the Taillon/Walker range.

I thought he was gonna get more.

Me too

I would have happily kept him for that price

Paying Kikuchi to suck and Ryu to not pitch hurts

Well on the bright side, Ryu might come back down the stretch and be useful. If not, he’s off the books after the season anyways. And there’s a chance Kikuchi doesn’t completely suck.

I pulled this from another post as it's relevant here. Later in the season the ropes were taken off of Stripling and he became more than a twice through the order pitcher. He pitched a minimum of 6 innings in 7 of his last 9 starts, facing an average of 22 batters during these outings. Whether he can repeat his 2022 performance is far from a given but his new changeup was a game changer for him.

22 batters is not really ropes off. That's twice through + change. I don't remember game specifics but it could be basic one-off things like his pitch count as 60 so they let him ride, or the other team had all RHB at the top of their order.

Look at Drew Rasmussen TBF per game. He is kind of the current model of a "twice through the order guy" as handled by the best player handling team in baseball. Many times he faces 22 hitters.

He came on really strong with that change up in the 2nd half. Surprised that's all he got. He's good.

well the opt-out is very powerful

it lets Stripling capture the value of most of his remaining talent upside

Should the Jays have qualified him?

Would have offset the draft pick loss for signing Bassit

But would have hurt his market which was obviously a bit weak. Clearly no one sees him as a full time rotation piece.

Stripling would accepted a qualifying offer in a heartbeat. It's obvious how MLB values him given the contract he just signed, so overpaying him by $7.5 million would have been a huge mistake.

A healthy (big if) Wood is a #3 quality starter. I doubt the Giants are going to add another SP.

They could be in the market for other pieces like Correa

Insert jokes about "healthy Wood" here.

Well.... he probably would have accepted the QO to be honest if he believes in himself and had any sense of the market. Because the QO is way better than the deal he just took.

So we'd probably have Stripling on 1/$19 instead of Bassitt.

I kind of prefer Bassitt on his deal, but it could go either way.

So the Giants would now be looking at a rotation something like

Webb

Cobb

Manaea

Stripling

Wood/Junis/Desclafani?

They need Correa so bad.

I also think Jansen could be a fit for them. I don't think they can rely on Joey Bart and his projected 1 WAR being the everyday Catcher. They love their platoons and Jansen hits well enough to DH against lefties when they sit Pederson so Bart can get more playing time than your average backup C anyway.

I think Cobb and Yaz would be great fits for us. Cobb slots into the rotation as high as #3. Yaz grades out as an above average fielder by almost every metric and he's a high launch angle guy so getting him out of San Fran could help him a lot. He's hit 25 and 17 homers the past two years but his projected homers jump to 29 and 20 if he were to play in TO.

Cobb has 2 years of control left and Yaz has 3. On paper it seems like we would probably have to add a little bit but MLB Trade Values sees it differently. I think they undervalue Cobb a lot.

Yeah. Stripling and the team knew he wouldn't get a big big $ offer.

And I like the Bassit deal better

It was likely right to not qualify him all things considered.

Is the Starting Pitcher market starting to cool down a little bit? Bassitt and Stripling both signed for reasonable market rates after Walker and Taillon got more than expected.

Maybe on average and in the B class of FA SPs

But some big $$ team (Padres, Dodgers, Yankees) will probably still pay big $ for Rodon specifically

Their model is pretty dumb on Cobb. He's got to be worth $20M; he's as good as Bassitt.

Yeah I agree. We'd have to add quite a bit. Or maybe even take Yaz out and do Cobb for Jansen close to straight up.

I’d do Cobb for Jansen but doubt that’s a fit at this point, I’m sure they would’ve made that move instead of Bassitt and used the $ on an outfielder
