L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Gausman Manoah Bassitt Berrios That’s a big boy top 4
The_DH Verified Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 If Jansen goes for a CF on an entry contract, we could save some money.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Yep, we could definitely just do that at this point. Conforto or Brantley. Either could platoon with LGJ vs RHP. We could also free up DH spots if we try and trade Jano for a premier RP. That would solve another issue. Im still holding out hope for a big OF trade involving one of the catchers. Would be nice to have another OF spot locked up for a few years. 2024 and beyond it’s literally just Springer
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Gausman Manoah Bassitt Berrios That’s a big boy top 4 And i am willing to put a bit of money on the line that Berrios has a bounce back season
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Gausman Manoah Bassitt Berrios That’s a big boy top 4 If Berrios can somewhat bounce back, oh man
Ray Verified Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 This is a much better SP acquisition than I was expecting. Bassit basically replaces Ryu in the rotation + same salary. Good job Ross. If Berrios bounces back to career norms, the rotation actually looks solid. Coin flip the 5th spot with White/Ryu/Kikuchi/AAA You gotta think between: Mitch White Yusei Kikuchi Thomas Hatch Nate Pearson Bowden Francis Anthony Kay Yosver Zulueta Ricky Tiedemann They can figure out something for that 5th spot. Would be a real nice time for Kikuchi to get his s*** together and/or someone from Buffalo to breakout. Not asking for much here. Just 5th starter production.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 I like Stripling, but you take Bassitt any time of the week over him. Between this deal, and them trying to go for Verlander, it's obvious they were trying to get a significantly better starter than Stripling to replace him. I would have been perfectly fine with a Stripling signing as I think the new changeup was a real game changer for him. There is certainly risk that he doesn't repeat his 2022 success though and Bassitt is a safer bet overall. Stripling was pretty great after he took over a rotation spot full time so I think whoever signs him might have a chance at a real bargain.
The Iceman Verified Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Need to replace Teo with equal or better quality hitter and the off-season is actually not too bad So you want the 2 time silver slugger award winner replaced by a better hitter do you...good luck with that.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 This is a nice deal when you consider what a guy like Taijuan was able to get in this market. Seems slightly expensive at first glance but that's the trade off for getting a shorter term deal. Need him to be worth roughly two wins per season, in order to live up to the contract. That doesn't seem like a stretch at all. It's not the most sexy addition but the rotation has been solidified. Yeah before the offseason I thought he would get 3 for 60 or maybe even 4 years like Ryu. But after seeing some of these insane free agent deals I thought he might get 5 years. This is a very 2021-like contract.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 I feel like they are done with the pen unless they open up room with trades The only thing that makes me think they want to add to the bullpen is apparently we were a finalist for Kenley Jansen. Doesn't seem like the type of move that would prohibit us from adding an OF and SP, so it might still be in play:
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Bassitt Fangraphs projected deal: 3/$51M actual: 3/$63M Taillon projected: 3/$42M actual: 4/$68M Walker projected: 3/$42M actual: 4/$72M

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Sweet Now sign Conforto and Rogers/Chafin FIN
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Ross has done a great job in an insane market. The Jays had to do something but he was patient and got some good players on shorter term deals. He must literally be laughing out loud that Tajiuan Walker and his projected 1.5 WAR got 4 years 71 mil when he got Bassit for 3/63.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Those Walker and Taillon contracts are f***ing gross lol. Especially Walker, his statcast page is all blue lmao At least Taillon can still spin it
InsideThePark Verified Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Real nice piece of business here. Honestly, I take Bassitt at $63M over Senga at $75M given Bassitt is actually a proven starter in the majors. Blue Jays only $8M away from the luxury tax now. Gotta think we cross it after maybe signing another OF? Still probably adding to the bullpen too. Going over by a little bit seems like it would be the worst plan. I would guess they hit a fork in the road and had to decide between going big(Nimmo, Rodon, etc) and going over or trying to stay under. Jansen+ for Alek Thomas and signing Taylor Rogers only adds about 7 million based on MLBTR projections(3.7 Jansen money out, 10 million Rogers money in, pre arb Thomas in)
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Love this signing. For what's left in pitching he's right behind Rodon.

Why do we need Rogers?
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Especially Walker, his statcast page is all blue lmao At least Taillon can still spin it Jesus Christ, Walker's contract is going to be a f***ing disaster lel Even after 2020 when a lot of (dumb) Jays fans wanted to pay him his metrics looked like ass.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Big Ross is getting creative with his deals

Imagine if Tanner Roark couldn't even eat innings. That's Taijuan Walker.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Are middle of the rotation starters really worth $20 million a year. God damn. Decent signing all things considered. This division is a different animal though.

I mean, c'mon. One of those guys has to become a big boy at some point.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Excellent. Jays avoid the insanity, step in with some sane, surgical moves.
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Especially Walker, his statcast page is all blue lmao At least Taillon can still spin it I think Taillon relied on the sticky stuff a lot. We will see about him.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 The Starter was very much needed. Would be nice it they could bring back Stripling as well. I don’t want Kikuchi or Mitch White anywhere near this rotation outside of spot starts at the most.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Actually just realized that the estimate I was looking for luxury tax payroll didn't include Kevin Kiermaier (since his contract details haven't bene released yet) So we're very likely at or over the luxury tax at this point.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 The Starter was very much needed. Would be nice it they could bring back Stripling as well. Ryu could potentially return mid-season (not counting on it, he's not exactly Verlander-esque when it comes to conditioning) with Tiedemann waiting in the wings.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 So they covered CF and SP. They could use another SP to push Kikuchi to the pen, but a bat is probably a bigger need now (Conforto, Brantley, trade, etc). I would trade for a lefty bat before acquiring a back end starter if those are the options
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Possible the Murphy trade started some dominoes, and we hear about a trade involving one of the C in the very near future.
