Blue Jays To Sign Chris Bassitt

By Steve Adams | December 12, 2022 at 3:21pm CDT

The Blue Jays have agreed to a three-year, $63MM contract with free-agent righty Chris Bassitt, reports ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Bassitt is represented by Meister Sports Management.

In adding Bassitt, the Jays have fortified a rotation that saw Ross Stripling reach free agency, lost Hyun Jin Ryu to Tommy John surgery early in the summer, and experienced substantial struggles from righty Jose Berrios and lefty Yusei Kikuchi. The ultra-consistent Bassitt will step into the mix behind third-place Cy Young finisher Alek Manoah and ninth-place finisher Kevin Gausman, with Berrios and Kikuchi likely to follow.

Very easy to see him producing 6 to 7 wins and being worth this money over three years, even if his peak is behind him

but maybe the best is yet to come? older guy with a deep bag of pitches. sometimes they continue to get better

Bassitt rejected the QO so the Jays will lose a pick and some international money, but getting a quality SP on a 3 year deal in this market is a nice piece of business.

Since they don't need Jansen to gain a starter, coupled with the Oakland Murphy trade, could a deal for an outfielder be on the horizon?

This is a nice deal when you consider what a guy like Taijuan was able to get in this market. Seems slightly expensive at first glance but that's the trade off for getting a shorter term deal.

Need him to be worth roughly two wins per season, in order to live up to the contract. That doesn't seem like a stretch at all.

It's not the most sexy addition but the rotation has been solidified.

So they covered CF and SP. They could use another SP to push Kikuchi to the pen, but a bat is probably a bigger need now (Conforto, Brantley, trade, etc).

Not much left to do.

Just sign Conforto and tell Moreno to bring 5 different gloves to spring training because he's getting reps in CF and every infield position.

Outside of Rodon, he's definitely the best of the rest. Losing the pick isn't great, but he's solid.

Need to replace Teo with equal or better quality hitter and the off-season is actually not too bad

By "not too bad" surely you would mean "perfect, sublime, error free, the ideal offseason"

They honestly might keep all three

Sign a platoon-ish corner outfielder (easiest position to find) and call it an offseason. Maybe a depth starter or something

Awfully expensive at 21 million per season, but I really like the 3 year term. I think in hindsight we should have offered a QO to Stripling if we were going to give out a deal like this, but it's pretty reasonable compared to other signings.

Real nice piece of business here. Honestly, I take Bassitt at $63M over Senga at $75M given Bassitt is actually a proven starter in the majors.

Blue Jays only $8M away from the luxury tax now. Gotta think we cross it after maybe signing another OF? Still probably adding to the bullpen too.

Yep, we could definitely just do that at this point. Conforto or Brantley. Either could platoon with LGJ vs RHP.

We could also free up DH spots if we try and trade Jano for a premier RP. That would solve another issue.

I feel like they are done with the pen unless they open up room with trades

I like Stripling, but you take Bassitt any time of the week over him.

Between this deal, and them trying to go for Verlander, it's obvious they were trying to get a significantly better starter than Stripling to replace him.

This is a much better SP acquisition than I was expecting. Bassit basically replaces Ryu in the rotation + same salary. Good job Ross.

If Berrios bounces back to career norms, the rotation actually looks solid. Coin flip the 5th spot with White/Ryu/Kikuchi/AAA
