Laika Community Moderator Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 So he's worse than Thornton and Merryweather? Fire Atkins! /s - but this doesn't pass the smell test. What's the Stuff + numbers on him? Isn't it Laika that posts that s***? I'd love to know what website he gets it from (I just googled it and couldn't find it) 103.2 Stuff+ 102 Location+ = 103.6 Pitching+ The Stuff+ is pretty mediocre (elite RP are like 130+) but the Location+ is good for a reliever (this number is more compressed, elite pitchers are like 107+). I don't know if this is telling. His Pitching+ (total figure) is near guys like Bryan Abreu, Kenley Jansen, David Bednar, but also some guys like Eli Morgan or John Brebbia who are less exciting.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 I'll fully admit I don't have the time to look into this deeply, and I don't watch all the playoff games or a lot of out of market games.... but where are these pinch runners, stolen bases, pinch hitters happening? Almost every playoff game this year was decided by extra base hits. Not all of them in the 9th inning. I mean the Jays got eliminated because Mariners comeback that started with a big homerun in the 6th. Final game of the year, Houston won because of a big homerun in the 6th. It's all about extra base hits. No inning is easier than any other. If Swanson was purposely being kept away from heart of the order, I can see his numbers might be deceiving, if he's facing a random assortment of batters doesn't matter what inning it is. His numbers may not be for real (because of variability) but nothing to do with pitching in the 6th inning. Well, the debate here gets murky because playoff baseball is not managed the same as regular season baseball. There’s strategy deployed at all times. In this case, it’s simply putting who you think is a better pitcher in for the 6th. I was talking more of regular season games. Meaning in the 6th inning, if Cavan Biggio comes up and there’s a lefty (or actually anyone if you’re a good team) pitching, you’re probably subbing him for someone that’s giving you a better chance to score. If Kirk gets a base hit, are you running off him in the 6th? Prob not. So get Tapia or Zimmer off the bench. Can a game in the playoffs or even regular season be decided in the 3rd inning? Of course. Not all 7-9 innings will matter. So in that case, sure, each inning is important in its own right and comes with its own set of pressures. Unfortunately all of your arms aren’t the same and so you have to pick who you want to keep for the high leverage situations
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Thanks man - what website do you get this info from? if you google "Eno Sarris pitching plus" you'll find his articles he tags the sheet in many of them https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AE1dNnudwRS6aLhWA1SArp1GoviUeHNcASXxtm3Le9I/edit#gid=183039869 this is the google sheet in my history
wamco Verified Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Soo (maybe include extra parts) and trade : Moreno for carroll Kirk for nootbar and Montgomery Sign rodon Kikuchi to pen Extend Jansen Dfa/trade thornton, Richards, Kay, hatch, merryweather
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Soo (maybe include extra parts) and trade : Moreno for carroll Kirk for nootbar and Montgomery Sign rodon Kikuchi to pen Extend Jansen Dfa/trade thornton, Richards, Kay, hatch, merryweather I don't see any way the Jays trade more than one of their catchers this off season. Especially if Jansen was the one they kept, who also has the worst injury history.
wamco Verified Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Would be set up well for now and the future tho, no?
InsideThePark Verified Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Sign Rodon, Trade Jansen+ for Nootbar, Moreno+ for Carroll, Kirk+ for Burnes, sign Contreras

wamco Verified Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Both have been discussed here repeatedly
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Would be set up well for now and the future tho, no? In your scenario catching goes from arguably the team's greatest strength to a total tire fire as soon as the inevitable Jansen injury hits.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Both have been discussed here repeatedly Right but we'd make one of those trades possibly, not both. One of Jansen/Kirk/Moreno will be traded. not 2
InsideThePark Verified Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Zach Britton will be here soon and we've all seen how leaving Zack Britton on the bench works out in the playoffs. Trade all the catchers and make Britton the starter.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Sign Rodon, Trade Jansen+ for Nootbar, Moreno+ for Carroll, Kirk+ for Burnes, sign Contreras Nice. No catcher for 2023. Plan the parade.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Nice. No catcher for 2023. Plan the parade. Contreras would be signed for 2023 and beyond. Seems weird to trade a trio of good inexpensive catchers and sign an expensive free agent though.
InsideThePark Verified Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Nice. No catcher for 2023. Plan the parade. Who needs a catcher. I checked the new shifting rules. There's no rule against putting your catcher in the outfield. Just don't let anyone get on base, you might end up with a few passed balls.

My mind can't process someone behind the plate not named Kirk, Jansen, or Moreno.

ColdPint Verified Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 I'm hearing some noise about Kirk being traded and Nimmo being signed from someone I trust has a source somewhere in the org (I know, I know). We'll find out soon enough.
InsideThePark Verified Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 I'm hearing Nimmo is being signed as well. My source wouldn't tell me which team though
wamco Verified Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 In your scenario catching goes from arguably the team's greatest strength to a total tire fire as soon as the inevitable Jansen injury hits. Right, like 90 percent of mlb. Just throwing an outside the box idea out there. Sell high and sell high. I was fine with Jansen/? as catcher before Kirk/Moreno came and I’m fine with it now.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Late to the party..... nice trade The speed at which the trade was done is interesting. It suggests the Jays are pushing hard on a FA signing or trade. I would really like a Kirk for Alek Thomas and Pfaadt deal. Even if Thomas is only an average hitter, his CF defense is elite. Carroll played LF because Thomas is so f***ing good in CF.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Kirk for Pablo Lopez or Trevor Rogers?
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Kirk for Pablo Lopez or Trevor Rogers? That's too much. You could get Rogers for Jansen and maybe even Lopez if you added a bit.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Kirk for Pablo Lopez or Trevor Rogers? I don’t think Atkins would trade Kirk for someone with less team control. I could see trading Kirk for someone like Thomas who has 6 years of control left.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Who needs a catcher. I checked the new shifting rules. There's no rule against putting your catcher in the outfield. Just don't let anyone get on base, you might end up with a few passed balls. Now there's a concept we should explore. With nobody on base - make your catcher a fielder. He can still call pitches with his transponder. It's where the ball crosses the plate - not where the ball is caught (or not caught) anyway! Is there actually a rule saying you must have a catcher behind the plate catching pitches? This might be more feasible when they got to the roboumps too - Angel Hernandez doesn't need to stand behind the plate anymore. He can just sit in a chair next to home plate and call balls and strikes with his cow prodding zapper from there! 3rd strikes and ball 4's poise some issues, but I'm sure we can figure that out.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Trade all 3 catchers and sign Vazquez
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Stop wasting roster spots on Catchers period. Just promote Hagen Danner. He can catch when he’s not pitching. When he’s pitching just have one of the extra players do it. Problem solved.
