Im retarded for saying I don’t like when a batter goes up to the plate specifically trying to get hit by a pitch?

That's not really what he said or did. He said if he got busted inside too far he would take the base. If Wheeler stayed away or inner half he would have hit. Wheeler had bat parts flying all over the field. Maldonado saw that and made a smart adjustment.

Mancini, Yordan, Pena, Verlander, Javier, Dusty - really cool stories for the WS ring.

Happy with this outcome.

Pulling Wheeler at 70 pitches. Rob Thompson will never live that down. Especially in a city like Philly.

He shouldn't be able to live it down if it was Topeka Kansas

He will but wont his argument be:

- Wheeler was suffering from something and nobody really knew what Wheeler would show up and for how long. His last start before this his V was down 3-4 MPH. Although Thompson didnt say that. He just said he liked the match up better with 2 on.

- Alvarado has been reliable lately and 14k/9. Even in Gm 5 Bregman took 101 away to RF. Wasn't a really bad pitch. A base was open if he was wild. Without Alvarado they would not be in Gm 6 of a WS.

- Alvarez less power and higher avg vs LHP. He did square up 99. It was center cut though. Still...99 with a round ball and bat aint easy.

- Do or die game and moment for PHI. No tomorrow. Their offense was struggling.

He is going to get raked and my kid was yelling "Alvarez crushes lefties, don't do it". But you can see Thompson's thinking.

At the end of the day they scored 1 run and HOU shut them down hard. That has more to do with why they lost. Schwarber weirdly trying to bunt his way on says it all. Its more bizarre than Grisham trying it.

In the entire post season HOU's pen gave up 5 runs in 54 IP.

is a local Philly take on it all FWIW Edited by BigCecil

So the moral of the story is kids, pitching (SPs & RPs

) and defense equals run prevention, run prevention wins world series.

This message is brought to you by Blue Jay fans for elite bullpens and the owners of Spanky’s bar: Liquor in the front, poker in the rear, getting hammered together since 1972.

Surprised there wasn't more discussion on this in here. All the old skoo guys were losing their minds, but the reality is that Alvarado was simply the best reliver in baseball since August 1st. The Phillies season was on the line. I don't give a f*** if the batter was a righty or a lefty - I want my very best arm on the mound. Unfortunately for Thompson - it didn't work out last night v. an incredible hitter. That's baseball.

The very best at that moment in the season was Wheeler

Easy to say in hindsight. Wheeler for the 3rd time or the best reliver in baseball since August (SSS, but obviously he's as dominant as anyone when he's right). Suggesting Wheeler is the obvious choice in that situation is ridiculous.

If he leaves Wheeler in and Yordan hits a bomb, then everyone is complaining that he didn’t go to the pen.

Its a lose-lose situation. Who knows if Wheeler would have got the job done

Rough season for Castellanos. Horrible post season. He literally did jack s*** with the bat.

He made that diving catch though in Game 1 :P

Agreed. Also...they scored 1 run. Hard to win with 1 run. Tip your cap to HOU starter and pen.

This is me personally but I can live with Wheeler giving up a 3 run bomb in that situation. That is my #1 and best pitcher for the last couple of seasons who I pay to pitch in moments like that. He still looked great. Had not given up a run at that point. I want Wheeler on the mound in moments like that. Especially with such a low pitch count.

I thought the same way about Gausman when he was pulled. He’s the guy you paid to pitch in moments like that. I want him on the mound deciding the outcome of the game.

There’s definitely scenarios where you look for your matchups in your bullpen determined by a variety of different factors. I don’t believe this was one of those.

This is a ridiculous take IMO.

Jays were winning 8-1. Gausman was dealing with the finger issue. You need him for future games. He looked shaky that inning. Nearing 100 pitches.

Plenty of reasons to go to the pen. The mistake was using Mayza there. But also if he gave up a flyout at the warning track instead of a homer barely clearing the fence, then nobody cares.

It's a completely different situation when you're going from your 'ace' facing the guy a 3rd time v. bringing in Mayza v. bringing in the best reliever in baseball over the past 3 months. Stangstag is bang on here. It's a lose-lose situation and it's unfair to rip the s*** out of the Manager like it was a given that Wheeler would have gotten him out or that Wheeler was the clear choice in that situation.
