Bass unfortunatley really sucked as the closer and lost the role.. Some guys just don't have the make up to be closer types..

WPA is probably the statistic to go for wrt pitchers and high leverage situations (closers typically have the highest # here).

Bass is 21st for Relief pitching with 1.43 WPA, 1.4 WAR.

People that have been traded above him? David Robertson to Phillies. That's it.

There was no other relief pitcher available who performed better in high leverage situations available on the market than Bass and Robertson, and we got one of them (+ Clay Holmes Jr + PTNBL) for a non-pitching trending-down prospect.

Have to go with a B

Did the team go out and strike fear into its division rivals, no

Would have been nice to snag some big names like in the past, the city sure knew we making a run when the likes of Henderson, Cone, Donaldson and Price where acquired

Those are two different things, again, you called the man an anti-vax idiot. Most people that didn't take this vaccine don't trust it for many various reasons, certainly not because they're anti-vax, those people are on another level, anyhow I'm done on the matter, lets move on.

Well said Spanky. There’s also a massive difference between not wanting something and speaking out against it. I don’t want to jump out of an Airplane that doesn’t make me Anti Skydiving lol. Simple minded people like to paint people with the same brush.

Based on track record there was an elite closer available that really could have been had as long as we were willing to eat contract.. Now AA has him...

Is he elite? His numbers this year are not great. Its definitely a gamble with how much money he is still owed

I'm sure many posters on here don't care what you think about the issue. If you think they're morons, just keep it to yourself. Keep it baseball related and don't make it personal. Not sure why you care about what others do with their own bodies anyways.

Communicable disease

1st case of polio in the USA in decades was found 5 days ago, in a 20 yr old unvaccinated man. The enormous success of vaccines is at risk due to anti-vaxxers.

He lost 1-2 mph on Velo, his GB% dropped and FB% increased (and he gives up a lot of HRs generally), and K/9 went down this year.

Don't think it is smart to take on a 48M/3y contract on a 32y old - we have enough pitching contracts that are still ??? atm.

We traded a pontential Hall of Fame 2b to obtain an SP in his FA year to give us a start every 5th day and maybe max two starts in a long playoff series.. We won the WS..

Not trading for an historically elite closer who could make appearance every game in the playoffs, just for $$ reasons when one is def a need for us is not doing what it takes to take us to the promised land IMO..

He was doing s***** in his last year with the Reds and then he got reinvigorated in LAA.. I think we would get his second wind being on a playof team and even as he is, he still improves our pen..

What if he does come over and continues his 4 ERA, 20% HR/FB, 3 BB/9 clip?

Money isn't the point here, its having the freedom to spend that money on valuable targets. It means we don't have 16M AAV to spend on other legit offseason targets.

I'll just agree to disagree on the whole take 16M AAV on a closer who is trending down for the next 3 years, cause that makes no sense to me.

Oh AND give up prospects on top lol

I don't care what others do with their bodies. I made that clear numerous times in my comments.

You have a sustainable mindset for the Team.. However, there is a time in a Team's window when you need pull the trigger and go for it... There is normally not a scenario for any Team where they go for it and there is no pain/cost... In this case, it was just $$ which I would prefer over really good prospects.. I don't think THIS year we should be in the wait until next year mindset...

It is only a matter of time until Boston gets good again, and the Rays are not so banged up.. Baltimore is coming on strong.. The Yankees are always good.... Then we have to deal with all the other Teams.. Mariners, CWS, Indians, Minnesota etc. We have a playoff spot this year so far and we need to strike while the iron is hot. No gaurantee we will be in the playoffs next year or the year after...

Iglesias is undoubtedly an upgrade, but the cost is something you really do have to consider. He makes too much for a reliever, and the term is too long. SURE if it was a 2 year deal you do that, but it wasn't and you can't just pretend that there is no future. I'm on record as saying I probably do that move if the prospect cost was basically nil, and I stand by that, but I'm also very okay with not making that specific move.

Great! So just keep your opinions to yourself on the whole COVID and vaccine issue. Still can't believe this is still a major issue. Move on!

Okay, I thought it would be clear that we had ended the discussion on this subject, but to be clear: future posts w/r/t this subject will be deleted. I am leaving existing ones (pro and con) for now, but I'll turn this whole f***ing car around if you guys don't behave.

So here is the thing about Bass. Not sure if you are aware, but I live in South Florida, until next week anyway when I am moving out to Silicone Valley.. Anyway... I am a closet Marlin's fan and anyone who plays Fantasy with me knows I normally hoard or go after Marlin's pitchers like a fat kid after cake.

Pop was in discussions for the closer role in the off season. Then it was decided Bass would be the closer to start the year. Bass unfortunatley really sucked as the closer and lost the role.. Some guys just don't have the make up to be closer types.. Bass is good and has thrived in the 7th, 6th, etc.. That is fine, he is def an improvment on 3-4 RPs we had until yesterday. However, I wanted to see and I think we needed another closer type. Pop is not yet ready IMO.... Maybe he would do ok.. But a crap shoot...

If Romano goes down tomorrow/tonight.. Our pen does not look good/competitive for a close stretch/playoff series...

That is my issue with the Bass/Pop trade in totatality, when you factor they did not get anyone else to compliment late innings..

Wishing you all the best. You're going from the best state and place on Earth to one of the worst now haha.

WTF?? Florida is an fnnnn great state... Thousands of people a day are fleeing other states and moving to Florida.. There is a reason for that..

Posted

Every American state is largely the same. Pretty much every one has great cities and towns as options to live in, and then they have a large amount of insane people living outside. Same deal for all of them. Rural Washington state is largely the same as rural Georgia or Florida.

The only differentiator is climate. I like it really hot so I’m a fan of Arizona especially.

He's a real prospect. We wouldn't have gotten Mitch White and Alex De Jesus (also a real prospect) for him if he wasn't. But he's got both injury and reliever risk and is old for his level (the non-prospects drag the average age up) so you have to take his stats in context. He also doesn't rank very high on any of the midseason prospect lists which take into account his dominating half season of A/A+ ball.

It just seems like people think he's Tiedemann or Top 100 or something when he's not. He's very mid.

I think the one big thing with Frasso:

The guy has literally never pitched more than 60 innings in a single season in his life, and that includes College.

2018: 60 IP

2019: 56.2 IP

2020: 8.2 IP

2021: 5 IP

2022: 36.2 IP

At no point in time has he ever approached anything even remotely close to a starter's workload. And he's almost 24.

Obviously the arm talent and athleticism are great, as are the results in High A. But I'm sure the Jays saw a pretty significant risk profile with him.

That would be a small sample size if it was all big league innings. But instead it's all innings from a mid-level D-1 conference and A-Ball.

I don’t think they are literally insane. It was kind of a slightly more polite way to say backwards and super racist.

That’s my personal experience. Your mileage may vary on that. My personal experience covers rural Washington, Georgia and Oregon. Applies a little bit to rural southern Ontario too but not as explicit.

Nice people generally though as long as you can code switch which I’m generally good at. I never felt threatened or anything. My best friend is from small town Georgia and I’ve spent a lot of time there. I would live in several towns in Georgia no problem .

Code switching is key. It keeps you from living the Deliverance movie in real life.

Code switching is key everywhere. I’m an immigrant and absolutely don’t perfectly fit into the Vancouver state of mind either.

You need to be able to relate to everyone even if you think that they are super hippie dippie or the opposite.

Also, I’ve never been someone who thinks person is ‘A’ so therefore they are evil. I’ve met tons of people who are absolutely racist but also not evil people, even to people of other races. It’s a complicated topic but also something people don’t talk about enough.
